The world's longest cross-sea bridge, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, in Zhuhai city, that connects the east and west sides of the Pearl River Delta in South China will officially open on Tuesday. The 55-kilometre bridge that will be opened for traffic on Wednesday morning, slashes through the Pearl River Estuary, lessening the travel time between Hong Kong and Zhuhai from 4 hours to 45 minutes. The main section of the project is a 22.9km bridge and a 6.7 km underwater tunnel. The bridge is part of Beijing's "Greater Bay Area" Scheme, aiming to provide better passenger and freight land transport between Hong Kong and Mainland China, integrating the Guangdong province into a better business hub. World's Longest Sea Bridge stretching 55 km & costs £14 billion connects Hong Kong to Mainland

02:32
The world's longest sea-crossing bridge connecting Hong Kong and Macau to Zhuhai, south-east China is set to finally open this week, nine years after construction began. The much anticipated Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge will open to traffic on Wednesday 9am local time. Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to attend an opening ceremony on Tuesday in Zhuhai. Construction started in 2009 on the massive crossing, which includes a snaking road bridge and underwater tunnel, linking Hong Kong's Lantau island to the southern mainland Chinese city of Zhuhai and the gambling enclave of Macau, across the waters of the Pearl River Estuary. Stretching across 55 kilometres, it is 22 kilometres longer than the width of the English Channel from Dover in the United Kingdom to Calais in France. The structure is the world's longest sea crossing and the sixth longest bridge on earth. Officials expect the bridge to be in use for 120 years and say it will boost businesses by cutting travel time by 60 per cent. More importantly, it is a key component in China's plan for a Greater Bay Area covering 56,500 square kilometres across 11 cities in south China. It consists of a 22.9 kilometre oversea bridge and a 6.7 kilometre undersea tunnel connected by two artificial islands. Engineers used 400,000 tons of steel to create the record-breaking road includes – nearly five times the amount of metal in San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge. Hong Kong's Secretary for Transport and Housing Frank Chan said travelling time between Zhuhai and Hong Kong International Airport would be shortened to about 45 minutes from four hours. The total price tag for the project, which includes artificial islands, linked roads and new border-crossing facilities, is unclear but some estimates run to over 130 billion yuan (£14 billion), leading critics to slam it as a costly white elephant. Seven workers have died and 129 have been injured since construction began. Most of them involved accidents where they slipped or fell from a high point. World’s Longest Sea Bridge Between China And Hong Kong

02:54
China is set to unveil this year the world's longest cross-sea bridge, connecting Hong Kong, Macau and mainland China. The crossing, which took seven years to complete, is 55km-long and six lanes wide, comprising of of four tunnels and four artificial islands. The multi-billion dollar project, which is being hailed as an international partnership, was reportedly built using more steel than 60 Eiffel Towers in the French capital, Paris. The bridge will cut travel time in half, drawing mainland China, Macau and Hong Kong to within an hour's commute of each other. It has drawn criticism for over-spending and some fatal accidents. However, Chinese authorities have hailed the finished project, inviting this week foreign media to inspect the crossing whose opening date has not yet been confirmed. "We hope that the friends from the press can take this opportunity to see the new accomplishment of China in the new era and fresh progress of the 'one country, two systems'", Song Ruan, deputy commissioner at the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, told reporters at this week's Hong Kong, a former British colony, returned to China in 1997 under a "one country, two systems" agreement that ensured its freedoms, including a separate legal system. But Beijing has ultimate control, and pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong contest it is increasingly clamping down on the city's constitutionally enshrined freedoms. An estimated 40,000 vehicles a day are expected to use the new bridge, including shuttle buses running at 10-minute intervals. The mega bridge is one of two major infrastructure projects set to open in the region this year - the other is a high-speed rail link to China. The main criticism of the rail link is the plan to allow Chinese immigration facilities to operate in central Hong Kong, not on the border. Some say this undermines Hong Kong's autonomy under the "one country, two systems" agreement. However, China says both multi-billion dollar transport projects will deliver Hong Kong more dividends with its integration, using one bridge to link three of the region's biggest economies.

World's Largest Sea Bridge in China is Almost Finished

02:35
Construction on the world's longest sea bridge connecting Hong Kong, Zhuhai and Macao is almost complete. After seven years of construction, the 34-mile-long bridge is set to open at the end of the year. It will cut travel time from Hong Kong to Zhuhai down to 30 minutes from 3 hours. Zhu Yongling, director of the management bureau of the bridge has confirmed that the bridge will open at the end of the year. The bridge used 420,000 tonnes of steel which is enough to build 60 Eiffel Towers. It bridge's total length is 55 kilometres (34 miles) making it 14 miles longer than the distance from Dover to Calais. The bridge has cost some HK$ 112 billion (£12 billion). Video footage shows the sheer size of the completed main structure. Yin Haiqing, a leading engineer on the project told Xinhua: 'Due to lack of experience, it took us 96 hours to lay the first tube in the ocean and many engineers and workers hardly slept for four consecutive days.' The bridge will cut travel time between Hong Kong and Zhuhai from three hours to just 30 minutes. However it hasn't all gone smoothly. Seven workers have died and 129 have been injured since construction began in 2011. Most of them involved accidents where they slipped or fell from a high point. In April, the Construction Site Workers General Union, the Labour Party and the Confederation of Trade Unions protested in Hong Kong calling on the government to improve workplace safety and calling on the government to investigate the accidents, reports Hong Kong Free Press.

Chinese President Opens World's longest Sea Crossing Bridge [BREAKING NEWS]

04:00
CNN Report: Chinese President Opens World's longest Sea Crossing Bridge || 中國總統開設世界上最長的跨海大橋 [BREAKING NEWS] Chinese President Xi Jinping officially opened the world's longest sea-crossing bridge Tuesday at a ceremony in the southern city of Zhuhai. The $20 billion megaproject further connects mainland China with the semi-autonomous territories of Hong Kong and Macau, with a 55-kilometer (34-mile) road bridge that has been in the works for almost nine years. It's a key element of China's plan for a Greater Bay Area covering 56,500 square kilometers (21,800 square miles) of southern China, and encompassing 11 cities, including Hong Kong and Macau, that are home to a combined 68 million people. Greater transport links Proponents of the bridge say it will significantly cut journey times between the cities, enabling commuters and tourists to easily move around the region. "With the bridge, the traveling time between Hong Kong and the Western Pearl River Delta region will be shortened significantly, thereby bringing the Western Pearl River Delta region within three hours' drive from Hong Kong," the city's transport secretary, Frank Chan, said Friday. Despite the focus on drive time however, private car owners in Hong Kong will not be able to cross the bridge without a special permit. Most drivers will have to park at the Hong Kong port, switching to a shuttle bus or special hire cars once they are through immigration. Shuttle buses cost $8 to $10 for a single trip depending on the time of day. Critics however point to limited demand in Hong Kong for the project, and competition from improved rail links and the Shenzhen-Zhongshan bridge, which once completed around 2024 is expected to cut traffic on the Zhuhai link by over 25% within 20 years. For critics of the Chinese government, the bridge is seen as a tool to drag Hong Kong -- which boasts a semi-democratic legislature and independent judiciary -- closer into Beijing's grip. "You can't see the existing transport connections -- in a literal way. But this bridge is very visible ... you can see it from the plane when you fly in to Hong Kong, and it's breathtaking," lawmaker Claudia Mo told CNN earlier in the year. "It links Hong Kong to China almost like an umbilical cord. You see it, and you know you're linked up to the motherland." Huge engineering effort Built to withstand a magnitude 8 earthquake, a super typhoon and strikes by super-sized cargo vessels, the bridge incorporates 400,000 tons of steel -- 4.5 times the amount in San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge. It also includes a 6.7-kilometer (4-mile) submerged tunnel to help it avoid the busy shipping paths over the Pearl River Delta. The tunnel runs between two artificial islands, each measuring 100,000 square meters (1 million square feet) and situated in relatively shallow waters. While an impressive engineering feat, the building of the bridge brought its own controversies. The Pearl River Delta is home to an endangered Chinese white dolphin population that has been buffeted by massive land reclamation efforts in Hong Kong and other cities. Conservation experts previously told CNN they feared the bridge, as well as ongoing expansion of Hong Kong airport, could be the final nail in the dolphins' coffin, sending the local population into terminal decline. This is China: Episode 1 of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge

50:01
The Engineers in China are redefining infrastructure development in the 21st century as the country's economy continues to develop. The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge is the latest evidence.  The bridge is designed to withstand the force of sixteen typhoons and force of eight earthquakes.  Another principal requirement is that it must not disrupt shipping in the area or flights in and out of Hong Kong and Macao international airports. Meeting these demands has created the need for a series of innovations in the bridge’s design, and in the construction materials and methods.  Further breakthroughs will also help ensure the bridge achieves its planned lifespan of 120 years – a significant advance over the 100 years that large-scale bridges have been designed to last, up until now.  Subscribe to us on YouTube: https://goo.gl/lP12gA Watch CGTN Live: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L2-Aq7f_BwE Download our APP on Apple Store (iOS): https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/cctvnews-app/id922456579?l=zh&ls=1&mt=8 Download our APP on Google Play (Android): https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.imib.cctv Follow us on: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ChinaGlobalTVNetwork/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/cgtn/?hl=zh-cn Twitter: https://twitter.com/CGTNOfficial Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/CGTNOfficial/ Tumblr: http://cctvnews.tumblr.com/ Weibo: http://weibo.com/cctvnewsbeijing

Scariest Bridges in the World

06:31
from the Vine Bridges of Iya Valley to the Eshima Ohashi Bridge, here are the Scariest Bridges in the World. Learn about the BIGGEST of everything Monday, Wednesday, and Friday just subscribe! # 8 Vine Bridges of Iya Valley Japan isn’t just home to big cities like Tokyo and Kyoto; it is also home to mysterious and strange places. One example is the misty West Iya Valley which is full of overgrown trees, flora, and the precarious “vine bridges”. The story of how these bridges came to be are lost to history, but what we do know is that they are made by real-life vines intertwined with planks. The bridge is sturdy but there are nearly one-foot gaps in between the planks, so if you’re a little nervous about walking on a bridge made of plants, you might want to find another way through the valley. # 7 Hussaini Hanging Bridge All you need to do is look at the Hussaini Hanging Bridge to understand why its so scary. It is a barely put together bridge that stretches across Borit Lake in Pakistan. With it’s sparse footing and steel wire it’s easy to see why it’s known by many as the world’s most dangerous bridge. Perhaps even scarier is the bridge right next to it which has collapsed and is treading water. It’s almost a warning that tells people not to use the bridge at all. # 6 Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge (pronounced carrick-a-reedy) The Carrick-a-Rede bridge is a famous rope bridge in Northern Ireland that links the mainland Ireland to the tiny island Carrick-a-rede. It is not a very long walk at only 20 meters or 66 feet in length but levitates 98 feet above a bunch of rocks and sea waves. However, you might be nervous to cross this relatively short bridge because it is entirely made of wooden planks and rope knots. # 5 Zhangjiajie Glass Bridge The Zhangjiajie Glass Bridge opened in 2016, and it is a truly spine-tingling experience. The bridge is suspended 900 feet high right above the steep valley. This bridge was built so that anyone crossing it can enjoy the nature and breathtaking sights below them. But, you might be a little too nervous to take in the view as you stare down at the nearly 1,000-foot drop. The scariest part might be the fact that one of the glass panes cracked underneath the feet of the pedestrian traffic. Now, the bridge is limited to less than 800 people at a time. # 4 Haohan Qiao Bridge The Zhangjiajie isn’t the only glass bridge in China. There’s another one known as the “Brave Men’s bridge” hanging in the Shiniuzhai National Park. Before 2014, the Brave Men’s Bridge already had a fierce reputation for being a harrowing walk. That’s when the park manager replaced the 300 meter or 980 feet long bridge just to make everything that much scarier. # 3 Ai-Petri Bridges In Crimea, there are these bridges that swing with the high winds of the Crimean mountains. The Ai-Petri bridge requires someone to have a gut of steel to get through. These peaks regularly experience gusts of up to 100 miles per hours many days of the year. If you can manage to cross these bridges, you will earn a beautiful view of the surrounding cities and the Black Sea. # 2 Aiguille Du Midi Bridge You can take a cable car all the way to the top of the Mount Blanc Massif mountain range in France and enjoy a view of the clouds. This bridge between two peaks is very short, but because you have to take a cable car up a mountain, it’s also very high. You will have to conquer any fear of heights as this short foot bridge is 9,200 feet high. # 1 Eshima Ohashi Bridge This list has some truly terrifying bridges, but this one might be the scariest to drive on. The Eshima Ohashi bridge connects the cities of Matsue and Sakaiminato in Japan, although it looks more like a rollercoaster than a freeway. It is known for having pretty much the steepest gradient of any bridge, and it’s so steep photos taken of it head on make cars look like they’re driving straight. Just remember to drive safely and keep your hands inside the vehicle at all times if you ever have to cross this bridge.

China seems to be one of the only countries who seem to like creating long bridges. There are certainly some incredibly long bridges in the world but certainly nothing comes close to this bridge which is the longest bridge in the world by a huge margin. It spans 22 miles or 35 km in length which took 4 years to complete. The bridge connects Ningbo’s Cixi to Jiaxing. This highway bridge features a cabled-stayed portion in the middle which was chosen to endure, earthquakes and typhoons that can occur in the region. The completion of the Hangzhou Bay Bridge reduced a trip from Ningbo to Shanghai by 112 mi or 180 km and reduced the time traveled by 2 hours. The challenging design of the bridge required over 600 experts a decade to design. Offshore construction, turbulent waters, and pockets of underground methane are just a few of the construction obstacles faced by engineers during this project. Half way across the bridge is a manmade island called Land between the Sea and the Sky which houses shopping, parking, restaurants and a hotel. 9. Hong Kong residents react to new bridge to China

01:18
Residents of Hong Kong react to the opening of the world's longest sea-crossing bridge. The 55-kilometer (34-mile) long bridge links Hong Kong to mainland China. The $20 billion bridge took almost a decade to build while incurring major delays and cost overruns. Rebecca Ko, a resident of Hong Kong said, “It wasted a lot of Hong Konger's money. Right? It's meaningless for normal Hong Kongers. We rarely go to the mainland China. We would hardly use the bridge.” The bridge also includes an undersea tunnel allowing ships to pass through the Pearl River delta - China's crucial manufacturing sector. Its opening will cut travel time across the delta from several hours to just 30 minutes. The biggest bridge construction machine, Heavy construction equipment world

10:23
A bridge needs to be built, so time to bust out the cranes, right? Not so fast, a Chinese company has built a machine that has a creative way of setting girders into place. The SLJ900/32, made by the Beijing Wowjoint Machinery Company, is a 580 ton, 300 foot long and 24 foot wide mega machine that looks more like a train than a crane and acts a lot like a Stretch Armstrong action figure. Instead of using a stationary or crawler crane to lift the girder of a bridge from the ground and drop it into its place, the SLJ900/32 drives the girder onto the previously placed girder, slowly extends its arms to the next support platform, pushes the girder towards the front of the machine and then lowers it into place.
