TIMELAPSE OF THE FUTURE: A Journey to the End of Time (4K)

29:21
Support my work on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/melodysheep | Get the soundtrack: https://bit.ly/2HKl9fi | How's it all gonna end? This experience takes us on a journey to the end of time, trillions of years into the future, to discover what the fate of our planet and our universe may ultimately be. We start in 2019 and travel exponentially through time, witnessing the future of Earth, the death of the sun, the end of all stars, proton decay, zombie galaxies, possible future civilizations, exploding black holes, the effects of dark energy, alternate universes, the final fate of the cosmos - to name a few. This is a picture of the future as painted by modern science - a picture that will surely evolve over time as we dig for more clues to how our story will unfold. Much of the science is very recent - and new puzzle pieces are still waiting to be found. To me, this overhead view of time gives a profound perspective - that we are living inside the hot flash of the Big Bang, the perfect moment to soak in the sights and sounds of a universe in its glory days, before it all fades away. Although the end will eventually come, we have a practical infinity of time to play with if we play our cards right. The future may look bleak, but we have enormous potential as a species. Featuring the voices of David Attenborough, Craig Childs, Brian Cox, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Michelle Thaller, Lawrence Krauss, Michio Kaku, Mike Rowe, Phil Plait, Janna Levin, Stephen Hawking, Sean Carroll, Alex Filippenko, and Martin Rees. Engine Fogging for Long Term or Winter Storage (Outboard Boat) - Tips from Tom

07:19
Check out our latest video: "Preventing Catastrophic failure and Breakdowns | Commonly missed RV and Vehicle maintenance Items" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NmOHARQugR4 -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Before storing your boat, car or any engine for an extended period of time its a good idea to prep it in some way. You can consider turning the engine over occasionally or doing something like this. Here are the things I recommend for doing this. Marine Stabi for fuel - http://amzn.to/2eo8uQ9 Motor Flusher or Muffs - http://amzn.to/2fid5kc Fogging oil - http://amzn.to/2eoaSpN In this video I go over how to prepare your outboard for long term or winter storage. This is the process for a carbonated outboard engine. It is commonly called Fogging but is sometimes incorrectly called "Pickeling" (This term is usually used for a process used in restoring an engine that has been submerged) The fogging process is quite simple for an engine like this. This is a carbonated engine and the process may differ for a fuel injected engine. To fog newer fuel injected engines they do make an additive you can put in some fuel and run through the system to do the same as this process.

The deep ocean is the final frontier on planet Earth | The Economist

14:49
Watch the latest in the Ocean series - Secrets of the deep: https://youtu.be/Zwgtn41TpfU The ocean covers 70% of our planet. The deep-sea floor is a realm that is largely unexplored, but cutting-edge technology is enabling a new generation of aquanauts to go deeper than ever before. Click here to subscribe to The Economist on YouTube: http://econ.trib.al/rWl91R7 Beneath the waves is a mysterious world that takes up to 95% of Earth's living space. Only three people have ever reached the bottom of the deepest part of the ocean. The deep is a world without sunlight, of freezing temperatures, and immense pressure. It's remained largely unexplored until now. Cutting-edge technology is enabling a new generation of aquanauts to explore deeper than ever before. They are opening up a whole new world of potential benefits to humanity. The risks are great, but the rewards could be greater. From a vast wealth of resources to clues about the origins of life, the race is on to the final frontier The Okeanos Explorer, the American government state-of-the-art vessel, designed for every type of deep ocean exploration from discovering new species to investigating shipwrecks. On board, engineers and scientists come together to answer questions about the origins of life and human history. Today the Okeanos is on a mission to investigate the wreck of a World War one submarine. Engineer Bobby Moore is part of a team who has developed the technology for this type of mission. The “deep discover”, a remote operating vehicle is equipped with 20 powerful LED lights and designed to withstand the huge pressure four miles down. Equivalent to 50 jumbo jets stacked on top of a person While the crew of the Okeanos send robots to investigate the deep, some of their fellow scientists prefer a more hands-on approach. Doctor Greg stone is a world leading marine biologist with over 8,000 hours under the sea. He has been exploring the abyss in person for 30 years. The technology opening up the deep is also opening up opportunity. Not just to witness the diversity of life but to glimpse vast amounts of rare mineral resources. Some of the world's most valuable metals can be found deep under the waves. A discovery that has begun to pique the interest of the global mining industry. The boldest of mining companies are heading to the deep drawn by the allure of a new Gold Rush. But to exploit it they're also beating a path to another strange new world. In an industrial estate in the north of England, SMD is one of the world's leading manufacturers of remote underwater equipment. The industrial technology the company has developed has made mining possible several kilometers beneath the ocean surface. With an estimated 150 trillion dollars’ worth of gold alone, deep-sea mining has the potential to transform the global economy. With so much still to discover, mining in the deep ocean could have unknowable impact. It's not just life today that may need protecting; reaching the deep ocean might just allow researchers to answer some truly fundamental questions. Hydrothermal vents, hot springs on the ocean floor, are cracks in the Earth's crust. Some claim they could help scientists glimpse the origins of life itself. We might still be years away from unlocking the mysteries of the deep. Even with the latest technology, this kind of exploration is always challenging. As the crew of the Okeanos comes to terms with a scale of the challenge and the opportunity that lies beneath, what they and others discover could transform humanity's understanding of how to protect the ocean. It's the most hostile environment on earth, but the keys to our future may lie in the deep. Who Lives at the Bottom of the Bermuda Triangle?

09:11
There is one special place that simultaneously terrifies and has unexplainable pull: 300 ships gone missing, 75 aircrafts never found; you're right, that's all about the Bermuda Triangle. Few people are aware of what the life is like at the bottom of the Bermuda Triangle – are you ready to meet the most shocking and scary creatures ever? Dragonfish live at the staggering depth of 5 to 7 thousand feet. This fish looks quite terrifying, with its black coloring and the light it produces on its own. Unlike other deep-water inhabitants, dragonfish produces light in the infrared range while the blue and green range is what other fish stick to. Vampire Squid has the largest eyes in terms of proportions in the world and is born to live in the depth. These animals are also covered with photophores which distract predators and lure prey. The mouth of the gulper eel is loosely hinged which makes it extremely wide and big. In fact, the length of the jaw of the eel reaches one-fourth of the length of their body. Despite being the owner of an enormous mouth, the gulper eel has tiny teeth, and this means that it isn't supposed to prey on large animals. The Goblin Shark reaches 13 ft in size and is also called the Vampire Shark due to the fact that it avoids light at all cost. Due to this feature, you can see the shark in its natural habitat only if you go as deep as 890 to 4300 ft. Pharynx, a complex feeding apparatus that helps Eunice Aphroditois catch the prey, can turn inside out, not unlike glove fingers. It has strong and extremely sharp mandibles which can easily cut the prey in half due to the strength and speed of the worm's attack. These are just some of the creatures that lurk in the depth of the Bermuda Triangle. Who knows what other unbelievable horror-movie beasts we can meet there? Nobody knows for sure what makes crafts disappear in this area. -Dragonfish looks quite terrifying, with its black coloring and the light it produces on its own in case of danger. -The Vampire Squid has is bright red eyes and crimson cloak that looks like webbing. In case of a threat, these creatures can invert their skin exposing their spines. -The pouch-like structure of the lower jaw allows the eel to deposit its prey there. Even the stomach of the eel can stretch so much that the creature can hold there a huge amount of food. -The Goblin Shark reaches 13 ft in size and is also called the Vampire Shark due to the fact that it avoids light at all cost. As soon as the prey appears in the vicinity, the jaw of the shark will elongate and grab it. -The worm buries itself in the seafloor with just a fraction of its body exposed. It has five antennae it uses to sense the prey. Shouldn't sea levels have risen by now?

09:29
Try Dashlane here: http://dashlane.com/simonclark Get 10% off now with my promo code: simonclark ! In this video I answer the question: 'isn't climate change supposed to have risen sea levels by now?' by looking at one dataset in some detail, and reviewing the scientific literature. Also: Kevin Costner's Waterworld. My video on stopping climate change: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GkbuV_a-rvs This video was light on the potential impacts of sea level rise. I wanted to focus specifically on the perception that sea levels have not changed, and spend time on the data. If you’re interested in the potential impacts then https://www.ipcc.ch/site/assets/uploads/2018/02/ar5_wgII_spm_en.pdf is a must read. Anthropogenic climate change (AGW) is a fickle bit of science, and like much of environmental science sometimes changes on (relatively) long timescales and global extent can hide in plain sight. That seems to be the case with sea level rise. The data is very clear: sea levels have been rising faster and faster over the past century, and this is not caused by natural variability. Humanity's carbon emissions are radiatively forcing the planet, causing net warming and so thermal expansion of the oceans and melting of ice sheets. It appears that this is going to become more and more painfully obvious as this century wears on, and so the sooner we take action the better. Long Term Outdoor Time Lapse Setup Turorial using SJCAM SJ4000 (GoPro Clone)

11:55
How to weatherproof and configure a genuine SJCAM SJ4000 for a long term outdoor time lapse. The best Firmware for this task: http://sjcamhd.com/wp-content/uploads... The SJ4000 officially supports a 32gb card which fills up every 2 weeks, but I have used a 64gb card that needs emptying once a month. I usually open the case and take the SD card out to empty it (because its faster), but there is a risk of camera movement, so the safest course of action is to take the USB cable out of the charger and plug it into a Computer. Here is the time-lapse after 15 months use. The only problem I had was a memory card corrupting which lost me about a weeks worth of pictures: https://youtu.be/PWCfITpUJT4 Blu Tack for sealing it against the weather is available in any stationary shop or most supermarkets. also on Amazon https://www.amazon.co.uk/Blu-Tack-Reusable-Removable-Sticky/dp/B01H2T7H66/ref=pd_lpo_229_bs_lp_t_2?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=3T7VF3234229VC4KGJHT

8 Bizarre Things People Found in Their Pool

11:38
Swimming pools are great in summers but after seeing these bizarre things in a swimming pool you might want to check what is in the pool before jumping into the water. Subscribe to World5List http://goo.gl/cpJSA6 Find us on... -- http://www.boredbadger.com -- http://www.facebook.com/world5list Now that summer is coming to an end and you won't be spending much more time in the pool you shouldn't worry about finding anything strange within your urine and chlorine infested waters. Join us as we look at some of the most bizarre things found in swimming pools. A Bear There are quite a few animals that you probably wouldn't want to share hot tub with and we're guessing one of those might just be a bear. One afternoon Tony and Denise Dearing looked out of there back door to find a full-grown bear bathing in there private pool. The couple was initially alarmed but then quickly realized they were missing out on the opportunity to create a viral video so they quickly fetched their phones. A Crocodile When you live in Florida you should expect to find all manner of reptiles invading your personal space. For those who you should expect to basically own a undocumented petting zoo for carnivorous creatures. A lesson that of Pennsylvania couple learned soon after purchasing a luxury home in the Florida Keys. Upon first arriving to their property the couple walked into their backyard which overlooked the Atlantic Ocean to find an 8 foot long friend swimming in their pool. It turned out to be a crocodile that had wandered in from the beach. Snakes Snakes are one of the most vile creatures on the planet. They don't belong on planes or in pools but somehow they have found their way into both but you were much more likely to find them in a pool. Year after year reports flood in to the local animal control offices regarding large snakes making home in or around a family's backyard pool. One country where such calls probably do not exist, the land down under, Australia. In a viral video from 2013 Trio of kids are seen swimming in a backyard pool as their dad films them having fun. At one point one of the children notices that there is a snake in the gutter of the pool. A Cow The term sea cow Is often used to refer to the Marine Mammal the manatee but in this case we are going to use the term to refer to a cow that just got stuck in a swimming pool. In 2014 a video surfaced from an Indian news site which two pictures of full grown cow swimming in a giant lap pool while they were children playing all around it. These 2000 lb Beast of Burden can often be found grazing next 2 bodies of water like lakes and streams. A Car So far are lifters been nothing but animals so it's time to mention one of the most strange nonliving things that has been found within a person's swimming pool. In the case of 1 Texas Family they woke up one morning to find a Dodge Charger in their family pool. End 2014 and over-privileged team from Cypress Texas was gifted a Dodge Charger for his birthday.

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch Is Not What You Think It Is | The Swim

07:51
It's not an island twice the size of Texas. But it is severely impacting marine life and human health... and incredibly hard to study. How Millions of Microscopic Fibers Are Ending Up in Our Bodies - https://youtu.be/Bbg0L7JN15U Read More What Happens to the Plastic We Throw Out https://www.nationalgeographic.com/magazine/2018/06/the-journey-of-plastic-around-the-globe/ "Henderson Island is a tiny, uninhabited island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, 3,000 miles from major population centers. Though it is half the size of Manhattan, more than 19 tons of trash litter its white, sandy beaches. Researchers estimate that it has the highest concentration of debris of any place in the world, for a total of over 37 million pieces on the entirety of the small island. For every square meter you walk, on average you’ll find 672 pieces of trash. For each visible piece of debris on the beach in the video above, two pieces are buried in the sand. How does so much trash wash ashore on Henderson Island?" We know ocean plastic is a problem. We can’t fix it until we answer these 5 questions. https://www.vox.com/science-and-health/2018/7/3/17514172/how-much-plastic-is-in-the-ocean-2018 "Ocean plastic has, in a pretty short time, become a surprisingly potent international environmental movement. For one, there’s more awareness now about the astounding quantity of plastic — between 4.7 and 12.8 million metric tons — floating around in the ocean. As the World Economic Forum put it, this volume is 'equivalent to dumping the contents of one garbage truck into the ocean per minute.' But what about large-scale, long-term plastic reduction? Shouldn’t we also be working toward that?" A running list of action on plastic pollution https://www.nationalgeographic.com/environment/2018/07/ocean-plastic-pollution-solutions/ "THE WORLD HAS a plastic pollution problem and it’s snowballing—but so is public awareness and action. Each year, an estimated 18 billion pounds of plastic waste enters the world’s ocean from coastal regions. That’s about equivalent to five grocery bags of plastic trash piled up on every foot of coastline on the planet. New research is emerging apace about the possible long-term impacts of tiny pieces of plastic on the marine food chain—raising fresh questions about how it might ultimately impact human health and food security. The world is waking up to a crisis of ocean plastic—and we're tracking the developments and solutions as they happen." ____________________ Ben Lecomte's historic swim across the Pacific Ocean is a feat that can’t be missed. An estimated 24 million people are expected to take cruises this year. One report showed more than a quarter of them are age 60 or older, and more than one-fifth are retired. Small Vessel Sea Service Form Section I

04:55
Section I - Applicant Information Small vessel sea service forms are used to document the time you spent on the water in order to qualify for your USCG captain’s license. Remember to use one small vessel sea service form per vessel. Fill in your last name, first name, middle initial, social security number, if you are applying for a renewal, upgrade, or increase you will have a reference number to fill in also. Next fill in the vessel’s name and state registration numbers, if your vessel is documented you will use the official number of the vessel. The form then asks for the vessel gross tons, length, width, and depth. The easiest thing to do here is fill in the vessel gross tons box as unknown and the length box with the length of your vessel and leave the width and depth boxes blank. If you would like to calculate your vessel’s approximate gross tons follow along with the gross tonnage calculation video. Next provide the propulsion type of your vessel and the position you were in on that vessel. Keep in mind that if this is an original license application you served as operator or deckhand. Next describe the waters you were on during your time on this vessel. The waters should be one of the following; Great Lakes, Inland, Western Rivers, or Near Coastal.

2017 Sea-Doo GTR-X 230 Long Term Review – Long Haul Episode 21

09:50
Whoowee! The Watercraft Journal sums up nearly a whole year with a 2017 Sea-Doo GTR-X 230 in just over 9 minutes! Many of you will also recognize this machine as being the trusty steed on several previous episodes of Long Haul throughout last year – and for good reason! Not only did we clock consistent 68-miles per hour top speeds, but averaged fuel economy that challenged many naturally-aspirated machines. Sure, we have a few critiques but overall, this GTI-based, RXP-X topped runabout was a big winner in our books. We go into a lot of detail, but make sure to check out our full-length feature review of this same ski on The Watercraft Journal. (Oh yeah, and there's a weird few seconds of audio in there. Sorry in advance to those of you reading this before watching.) The Watercraft Journal publishes every day, Monday–Friday. A Submariner Homage or Super Homage as some like to call it. Ginault's goal with the Ocean Rover was to create a modern-day Milspec Submariner. With quality that you might expect from a Rolex Submariner, or at least as close as they could get it. Including making their own movement, which I believe is an ETA clone. The result is the Ocean Rover, which becomes a greatest hits of the Submariners past. Mixing and matching the best ideas over it's history to create a dream submariner for some people. Why Short-Term Liver & Gallbladder Detox Cleanses are a Waste of Time

03:35
Healthy Eating Plan: http://amzn.to/2ypFAXw Take Dr. Berg's Advanced Evaluation Quiz: http://bit.ly/EvalQuiz Your report will then be sent via email analyzing 104 potential symptoms, giving you a much deeper insight into your body issues. It's free and very enlightening. Dr. Berg talks about the detoxification of bile. Bile is made by the liver, gets released down a pathway called the bile duct. It then gets stored in the gallbladder and concentrated. Bile helps you extract essential fatty acid and fat soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K1, K2). Bile also helps to lubricate the colon prevents constipation. If the liver becomes damaged, like cirrhosis, inflammation like hepatitis, or a fatty liver the ability of the liver to detoxify and make bile reduce dramatically. Toxins back up. Realize that most cleanses (gallbladder and liver) that are short term and really do not create a dent into the real problem. The liver takes 3 years to regenerate and the big picture needs to be to fix your eating, as a longer term correction. Climate change and the challenge of long-term thinking | Adam Sobel | TEDxBroadway

10:45
Adam Sobel doesn't want to prove that climate change is real. If you don't believe yet, he's confident you will eventually. Instead, what he wants to do is help our decision making about long-term events with future consequences to be better. He talks about climate change and how it has already and will continue to affect New York City, and how everyone should be thinking differently. Adam Sobel is a professor at Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory and Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. He is an atmospheric scientist who specializes in the dynamics of climate and weather, particularly in the tropics, on time scales of days to decades. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

What is ORDINARY SEAMAN? What does ORDINARY SEAMAN mean? ORDINARY SEAMAN meaning & explanation

What is ORDINARY SEAMAN? What does ORDINARY SEAMAN mean? ORDINARY SEAMAN meaning - ORDINARY SEAMAN definition - ORDINARY SEAMAN explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. SUBSCRIBE to our Google Earth flights channel - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6UuCPh7GrXznZi0Hz2YQnQ An ordinary seaman (OS) is a Naval rating of the deck department of a merchant ship. The position is an apprenticeship to become an Able seaman, and has been for centuries. In modern times, an OS is required to work on a ship for a specific amount of time, gaining what is referred to as "sea time". For centuries, the term ordinary seaman was used to refer to a seaman with between one and two years' experience at sea, who showed enough seamanship to be so rated by their captain. An OS is generally not required to stand watch, but must pass examinations on watchstanding skills such as performing lookout duty and being a helmsman. Thus an OS will often be found on a ship's bridge after working hours taking a turn at the ship's wheel or being familiarized with bridge equipment. During the apprenticeship, an OS performs a variety of duties concerned with the operation and upkeep of deck department areas and equipment. These duties vary with the type of ship, the type of voyage, the number of crewmembers, the weather, the supervisor, and any number of other variables. However, in most cases, one can expect an ordinary seaman to clean, to perform maintenance, to work with deck equipment, and to undergo on-the-job-training under the supervision of senior deck department members.

The secret to desire in a long-term relationship | Esther Perel

19:11
In long-term relationships, we often expect our beloved to be both best friend and erotic partner. But as Esther Perel argues, good and committed sex draws on two conflicting needs: our need for security and our need for surprise. So how do you sustain desire? With wit and eloquence, Perel lets us in on the mystery of erotic intelligence. Crystal Ocean wins the 2019 Prince of Wales's Stakes | Royal Ascot

08:01
Crystal Ocean graduated to Group One class as he lifted the Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot. Trained by Sir Michael Stoute, Crystal Ocean had finished second at the highest level twice last term, but he finally came good as he outbattled Aidan O’Brien’s Magical in the 10-furlong showpiece, which was run in pouring rain. Given a masterful ride by Frankie Dettori, Crystal Ocean (3-1) raced on the heels of pace-setter Hunting Horn until the race began in earnest turning for home. Dettori committed early and moved out to the middle of the track as 13-8 favourite Magical struggled to go with him, before he just started to drift back to the far rail. Ryan Moore switched Magical to the inside for a second run, but Crystal Ocean was not for passing and Dettori stood up in his irons before the line, coming home a length-and-a-quarter winner. Andre Fabre’s Waldgeist made up late ground to take third, while the William Haggas-trained Sea Of Class was fifth of the eight runners on her seasonal bow, having run despite concerns over the rain-softened conditions. Stoute – enhancing his record as the all-time leading trainer at the Royal meeting with his 80th success – said: “It was great team work. Several people ride him work, including Ted Durcan. “He’s been very consistent. If you look at his record, it’s quite amazing. It’s great for the (Southcourt) stud to have a Group One horse. “I thought he ran very well in the Champion Stakes last year. He ran better than I thought. “He may be better at a mile and a half, but he’s certainly a pretty good horse at a mile and a quarter and he’s proved that today.” Dettori said: “He stayed well. I kicked on the final turn, he responded well and kept on going. I got very little kickback as I was in the first two. The rain’s on top of the ground, but it’s not very pleasant out there. I stayed wide for the fresh ground. “I was worried about the ground, as his best form is on firm, but he’s very tough. “This horse is a heavyweight of the sport. He never runs a bad race.” O’Brien said of Magical: “She ran very well. I’m very happy with the filly and she ran well. She might come back for the King George or maybe the Eclipse.” Fabre said: “It was a good run and he might come back for the King George. I was not concerned about the ground, as he has won on soft ground before.” Sea Of Class was ridden by James Doyle, who said: “She clearly disliked really deep ground like it is out there today. Trying to take the positives, the filly felt great and she travelled really well, we were just a bit too far back. “The main thing is it was nice to get a run in and start her off.” Haggas added: “I’m so angry with myself for running her, and subjecting her to that awful weather and ground. “As soon as I made the decision to run her, it then bucketed down with rain for an hour. It was a mistake to run her and occasionally we make them. “The plan was to go to the King George, so we will see, but she could still go there.”

USA vs China: High Tension - Wednesday, June 26, 2019. US Military News Update

12:24
Rare Video !! (http://bit.ly/2vCp0DG) High Tension (http://bit.ly/2WnHL9B) Worst Nightmare for America's Enemies! (http://bit.ly/2vxZEHc) WW3 News Update (http://bit.ly/2IY9fzP) US Military News Update (http://bit.ly/2PJxz8Z) US Naval Chief Denounces China and Calls for Stronger Military Partnership with Sri Lanka Addressing the Senate Armed Services Committee (SASC) in Washington early this month, US Navy Indo-Pacific Command chief Admiral Philip Davidson denounced Beijing and called for stronger US-Sri Lanka military relations. While Davidson’s report to the SASC mainly centred on the need for an escalation of US aggression against China, he reiterated Washington’s determination to keep Sri Lanka locked into the US geo-strategic agenda. Davidson raised concerns about ethnic tensions between Tamil and Sinhalese, the government’s decision to lease Hambantota Port to China and ongoing political and economic instability but insisted that, “It is in our interests to continue military collaboration and cooperation” with the island nation’s military forces. Sri Lanka, he declared, “remains a significant strategic opportunity in the Indian Ocean, and our military-to-military relationship continues to strengthen.” China, he told SACS, “represents the greatest long-term strategic threat to a free and open Indo-Pacific and to the United States” and accused Beijing of plotting “to expand its form of Communist-Socialist ideology in order to bend, break, and replace the existing rules-based international order.” Notwithstanding the ridiculous claims that the Chinese Communist Party is spreading “Communist-Socialist ideology,” Davidson’s tirade is another example of Washington’s increasingly hysterical allegations against Beijing. He also repeated belligerent statements made last year by US Vice President Mike Pence that China was exerting greater control over smaller nations like Sri Lanka by providing soft loans and laying a “debt trap.” “Beijing is also exploiting growing debt burdens to access strategic infrastructure in the region,” he said, using the recent transfer of Sri Lanka’s southern Hambantota port to China in exchange for debt relief, as an example. The US Navy Indo-Pacific Command in 2019, Davidson said, would focus on increased navy-to-navy focus and engagement. He referred to the recent transfer of a US Coast Guard (USCG) vessel to Sri Lanka and said that Washington, along with other strategic partners, such as India and Japan, was working “to rapidly enhance the Sri Lankan Navy’s capabilities.” The Indo-Pacific Command chief’s agenda, in fact, is already in operation. Acting Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Thomas J. Vajda told a “Pathfinder Panel Discussion” in Colombo on February 14 that Washington plans to spend $39 million in Sri Lanka to support maritime security, freedom of navigation, and maritime awareness as part of its Bay of Bengal initiative. “We are working with key partners like Sri Lanka to protect and enhance a rules-based order in the Indo-Pacific,” he said. The so-called rules-based order is a euphemism for Washington’s economic and military domination of the Indo-Pacific region. The US military, and the navy in particular, has systematically increased its presence in Sri Lanka in recent years. Last year there were more than five major collaborative engagements between the US and Sri Lankan naval forces. In December, USS John C. Stennis, the US 7th Fleet aircraft carrier, visited Sri Lanka’s Trincomalee port in preparation for the establishment of a US Naval Logistics Hub. Aircraft from USS John C. Stennis were also involved in logistics operations between January 21 and 29, transporting goods, including spare parts, tools, personal mail and other items, from Sri Lanka’s Katunayake International Airport, just outside Colombo, to the giant aircraft carrier. The Sri Lankan navy’s Marine Force—closely modelled on its US counterpart—has been receiving extensive training from the US Marine Corps since its inception in 2016. In November 2016, the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit held week long training on vessel “search and seizure” near the Trincomalee deep seaport. In August 2018, Sri Lankan marines participated in the US-led Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) military exercises for the first time and received special training in Hawaii. Later that month the US 13th Marine Expeditionary Force held “at-sea” exercises for Sri Lankan marines and sailors aboard USS Anchorage, an amphibious transport dock. The Sri Lankan government has also renewed its far-reaching “Acquisition and Cross-servicing Agreement” with the US. Originally signed in 2007, under former President Mahinda Rajapakse’s administration, the agreement gives the US armed forces access to Sri Lankan ports and airports. ... Source www.wsws.org
