You find one person who's a hard worker and process-oriented, and you make them do all the work. I'm a terrible manager. I hate managing. My management style is to find one person who does it all and overpay them. I only hire smart people, so then that way, I don't have to deal with people that need to be trained or people that need to be taught. Hire really skilled people, overpay, and then we hold Lunch and Learn meetings, to roll-out new marketing strategies. I'll teach the new strategy to the production team, we record it, and then, boom, you have the recording on file for future training purposes. We created this marketing doc, and I think right now we're at 176 steps and growing. Anytime we have a customer, a client, or we're doing marketing internally, we just go down the list. You do one, number two, number three. So, if you want to know my management style secrets, here's what you have to do. Overpay, especially in marketing, hire the best, hire people who are experimenting and learning. Don't hire people who only want to clock in for a 9-5 job. I love hiring marketers who have their own side-gigs and projects. They can experiment on their side gigs and bring what they've learned to my company and in turn we expand and grow. That's my management style. It works well for me. I don't like going into the office. I'm not going to ever manage 20, 30 people. I just find two or three or four people who can do everything I need, and I work with them and communicate with them on a daily basis, and that's it. I typically look for people who are struggling and had a good job but didn't get paid well. Mike came from the car dealership industry where the car dealership he was running struggling, and he had to figure out how to hire people, make it grow, and be creative. I'm not looking for people who know marketing. I'm looking for people who know how to hire, who know how to fire, who are creative, who can build up processes. I have this churn and burn model, although that sounds bad. I'll hire a few people, test them out, or live with them, I have a house, with empty rooms and they come and stay with me for a trial period. They have to be able to learn on their own, just pick up from listening to me talk about marketing and eventually they learn the ropes. They have to come up with creative strategies on how to make more money for the business. I look for people who are entrepreneurs but don't have the capital. I bring them into my business, I'll give them profit-sharing or revenue sharing, and I make deals where they have to figure out how to grow the business. Usually, the ones who know how to manage are process-oriented and are creative rise to the top. It's expensive. It's not cheap. You'll pay well into the hundreds of thousands using this management style, if not millions, but it's worth it in the end. So, as long as you're willing to pay, it's worth it, because they will make you way more money than what they cost you in the long run.

His career began at the General Electric Company in 1960 and he became the Company’s eighth Chairman and CEO in 1981. Practical case study : differences between French and German management styles Managers have to perform many roles in an organization and how they handle various situations will depend on their style of management. This video shows a practical case study : 2 teams have to build a sugar tower in 15 minutes : the highest wins. Goal of the experiment is to find out the working differences in both countries and the different management styles in each team. Let's start with the French team. It is interesting to notice that every team member spontaneously starts building his own tower, while the manager is supervising the situation. For the French, feeling the situation is more important than caring about technical details. In France, hierarchy is very important, therefore the French manager is clearly the leader. He dispatches the work and gives the main directions. In this scene, we notice the role of humour : the manager knows to be very strict, but he is also able to make the atmosphere less tense. Here, we can see what can be considered as a typical sign for French intelligence : the manager does fair comments and gives useful advices, then he lets the others work. Another caracteristic of the French manager is his charisma : he motivates the team through rhetorical speeches, because he has a goal ahead and he is determined to win. The emotional link with the project is very strong. But he is also selfish and bossy. This is commonly called autocratic management : the manager makes all decisions unilaterally and everyone has to obey, because he knows better. Here, the French manager is mocking the German team. This is a weakness of the French manager, you might say. Too much selfconfidence make him proclaim 'he won' as soon as he feels superior to the opponent. The French manager doesn't fear risks and improvisation : the solution is not only useful, it is original, creative, there must always be a little spice. 85 cm Let's go on with the German team. First, it is striking that right from the outset, the approach is very different. Before starting building anything, the team debates on how the tower should be built : for the German Manager, priority is to find a concept. He is in charge of the planning, which is of paramount importance, because the German manager always wants as less risk as possible. Therefore, every single detail has to be precisely considered. Now that they have the plan, the construction itself can begin. The precise planning enables the German to be very efficient and confident : they cannot easily be disconcerted. Even if in comparison to the French, there is not such a strict bareer between the boss on the one hand, and the subordinates on the other hand, the German manager remains the most competent team member ; he is THE expert. Whereas the French Manager uses an autocratic style, the German uses a permissive one. He gives his subordinates a certain degree of autonomy in completing their work and also permits them to take part in decision making. Indeed, the German not only work together, they also take decisions together. There is a real team spirit, fostered by the German manager, who listens carefully to every team member. Every decision is discussed within the team. This permanent discussing would surely drive a French manager crazy. It enables any team member to give his point of view, but it also makes the whole decision process very slow, so it can be both considered as a strength or a weakness. The two management styles have both their strengths and weaknesses. The strength of the German manager is his commitment to achieving a goal that has been planned in advance, and if no unexpected interference comes, he will get there. The strength of the French manager is to achieve many impossible things with his enthusiasm and emotional identification with the project. In spite of the geographical closeness of the two countries, the management styles appear to be very different. Subscribe by clicking here: http://goo.gl/CPTsV5 Transcript: So, flex is the art of switching between leadership styles in order to better effectively communicate with people who are different from you, so different from you generationally, culturally and across the gender divide. It's about stretching your leadership style and not fundamentally changing who you are and about adapting to the people across from you so that you can get the best results. Well, the workforce is changing and has been changing for a number of years. I believe multicultural workers make up 36 percent of the population. Women make up nearly half of the workforce and I think make up something like 70 percent of buying decisions and certainly millennials are increasingly a bigger part of the workforce as well. And so there are so many demographic changes that are impacting our workforce. I don't know if managers are always certain about how to work with this new workforce, how to better engage and motivate these new workers that are entering into the workforce. In addition to that there's a cost of not flexing. So for example, I think the Gallup study last year said something about 450 to $550 billion of loss due to disengaged employees. So you might have employees that you've hired into the organization that maybe had one foot out the door, that really don't feel motivated and engaged and don't feel like the organization is really speaking to them. And so for this and many reasons I think there's such a business case and an opportunity for an organization to create a value proposition for their employees if they can get this right. The power gap is a pretty critical element in the art of flexing. The power gap is the amount of social distance that exists between yourself and people who are in positions of authority, and if you're the manager the distance that exists between yourself and your team members. So you can have a small power gap or a large power gap. If you have a small power gap, it's more of an egalitarian relationship where even as a manager you see yourself as more of a coach or as a guide and you have a very informal relationship with your colleagues. If you have a high power gap and you're the employee you see your leader as maybe more of an authority figure and there's a huge gap between yourself and that corner office. And so the way that we see the power gap play out in the workplace is pretty important. And as we think about the art of flexing, understanding the dynamics of the power gap, particularly as it relates to generational and cultural differences, can play a big part in your effectiveness. So, as you work across these differences your goal then is to be a fluent leader. And a fluent leader is someone who can effectively manage those differences in the workplace to get the best business results. One of the traits of the fluent leader we found, and there's many traits, but one of the things that we want to focus on today is innovation and an ability to really see outside the box and bring out the voices of people who are on your teams who have different perspectives. And so I think of one example in Douglas Conant who was a former CEO of Campbell Soup Company, he spent some time as a CEO really looking at how do we increase customer engagement. He was hired at a time where some of those numbers were slipping and he really wanted to look at what were some of the voices that we really can connect to that haven't been heard to before. And so they spent a few years really looking at the voice of the woman customer. How do we make decisions about our product lines and service lines that can appropriately reflect what they're looking for? And he worked with Denise Morrison, who is now actually the CEO of the company, to come up with some ideas. And from those conversations the Healthy Request line was born. And so when I think about his example I think about how he bridged the power gap to flex his style, to ask the opinions of people who are always there but perhaps their voices weren't heard in the loudest form.
