How to Engage More Girls in STEM

03:45
Just a few decades ago, it was a rare sight to see a woman working in a #STEM field (science, technology, engineering, mathematics). Today, while more common, women are still outnumbered 3 to 1 by their male counterparts. Based on scientific research, we've identified five actions that will help engage more girls in STEM. EPI is implementing these initiatives into its daily work as part of its #STEM4Good campaign. And you can, too. How to get girls to like STEM: Heidi Olinger at TEDxBocaRaton

11:57
The U.S. needs the contributions of all of our thinkers and problem-solvers. By the numbers girls make up more than one-half of our home-grown talent base — the half we have discouraged in STEM/science, technology, engineering and math. In this inspiring talk, education expert Heidi Olinger outlines the four things we must do to engage girls in STEM right now in the Digital Age, when neither girls nor the nation can afford to be STEM illiterate. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Inspiring the next generation of female engineers | Debbie Sterling | TEDxPSU

17:09
Close your eyes and picture and engineer. You probably weren't envisioning Debbie Sterling. Debbie Sterling is an engineer and founder of GoldieBlox, a toy company out to inspire the next generation of female engineers. She has made it her mission in life to tackle the gender gap in science, technology, engineering and math. GoldieBlox is a book series+construction set that engages kids to build through the story of Goldie, the girl inventor who solves problems by building simple machines. Debbie writes and illustrates Goldie's stories, taking inspiration from her grandmother, one of the first female cartoonists and creator of ""Mr. Magoo."" Her company, launched in 2012, raised over $285,000 in 30 days through Kickstarter, and has been featured in numerous publications such as The Atlantic and Forbes. Prior to founding GoldieBlox, Debbie served as the Marketing Director of Lori Bonn, a national jewelry company. For the past 7 years, she has also served as a brand strategy consultant for a wide variety of organizations including Microsoft, T-Mobile, Organic Valley and the New York Knicks. Debbie's inspiration to create a mission-driven company came in 2008, when she spent 6 months volunteering at a grassroots nonprofit in rural India. She created a viral fundraising campaign called ""I Want a Goat,"" raising over $30,000 for economic and educational development in the region. This experience helped pave the way to finding her true passion: inspiring the next generation of female engineers. Debbie completed her degree in engineering at Stanford (Product Design, '05) and currently lives with her husband in San Francisco. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Go Girl! Engineering a bright future for today's girls

04:01
Women constitute 48 percent of the U.S. workforce but hold just 24 percent of the U.S. jobs in STEM. Even worse, only 1 out of every 10 STEM professionals is a minority woman. Women make up only 10 percent of U.S. engineers. We must change this. Today's girls are our future engineers - they naturally possess the creativity and analytical and communication skills that are the signature traits of an engineer. We must inspire them to dream big, reach higher, and pursue their passions. Join Project Lead The Way in introducing girls to the exciting career of engineering!

Alice Envisions the Future - Girls in STEM AI Bootcamp

02:16
Website: https://www.microsoft.com/en-mt/ai4girls Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/MicrosoftAIBootcamps/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/microsoft_ai_bootcamps/ The story of every Alice out there. A manifesto for creativity and using technology with empathy and courage. The next generation’s way of contributing to A.I. for Earth. You don’t have to change the world (just yet), just your little corner of it. It’s a crowded world out there, isn’t it? It feels more and more noisy. Rushed. Our generation has grown up knowing and enjoying nature and is now trying to win-back what was broken in time. Alice, this 15 year old girl, feels a lost connection to what we have been privileged to experience. And yet, she dares to dream. Not only that, but she starts to build. Using technology available to her in order to add, step by step, improvements to her little corner of the world. We’ve seen her. Some of us have been her. We know her determination, her incredible sense of empathy, her moments of frustration and the joys of succeeding. Our goal was to deliver a manifesto that’s not just about technology. But one that empowers every Alice out there to use it and envision a better tomorrow. We wanted to show that Alice is real. Alice that wasn’t represented that much before. An Alice that is cool. Alice that dreams and dares and tries over and over again. The vision: A promise to empower all. A common vision for the future. An ad to encourage. Believe.

'STEM Queen' Jacqueline Means is Bettering Wilmington, Delaware for Girls | NowThis

03:04
16-year-old 'STEM QUEEN' Jacqueline Means lives in one of America's most dangerous cities — but she's sharing her love of science with other girls to improve their lives. » Subscribe to NowThis: http://go.nowth.is/News_Subscribe 16-year-old Jacqueline Means, aka ‘STEM Queen,’ created a nonprofit to get underprivileged girls in her community involved in STEM. Jacqueline: 'My turning point was when I saw that person not much older than I get shot and I knew there has to be something that I can do to make Wilmington better but I can't just sit here and just watch all these negative things happen and not do anything. I've always had a passion for STEM. I want to be a neurosurgeon when I get older. I've always thought the brain was so fascinating. I've always felt that I love science and that I could share that love of science with other girls. If I can better some little girls they are make her say Oh you know what I love stem. I didn't think it was for me I thought it was just for boys. But now I can do it too Means’s hometown of Wilmington, DE has been called ‘Murder Town USA’ because it’s one of the most dangerous small cities in America. Means has witnessed the violence that in Wilmington, or more notoriously known as ‘Murdertown USA’ 'I live in a part of Wilmington that's called Southbridge and it's a especially bad part of Wilmington just because there is so much poverty and just so much crime going on in the area. My mom has always told my brother and I that the only way to better your situation is to do it yourself you can't wait for others to come along and start up what you know should be happening you could just do it yourself.' At 13, Means founded the Wilmington Urban STEM Initiative, a nonprofit that hosts STEM workshops for girls in her community and connects students with influential women. 'Not only did it feel good for me knowing that I positively impacted these young girls even if it was just a little bit like them and know that they could do anything in their life.' 'So when I need someone and they find out that I've used them they're always so amazed, they say oh really. You do STEM? and I'm like yes I love STEM and I love science. I love math. And then they find that I do pageants and they say I thought pageants were for dumb girls and I'm like No they're not.' 'Myself coming from Southbridge you think that I would have bad grades that I wouldn't even think about dating back to my community. But I'm absolutely opposite. I have an awesome GPA. I have really good grades. Even with these college courses and I love to get back to my community and do what I can to make them in a better place.' Means says her first STEM event reached nearly 40 girls and now, she has impacted over 350 girls in her community. #STEM #Science #WomeninSTEM #GirlsinSTEM Connect with NowThis » Like us on Facebook: http://go.nowth.is/News_Facebook » Tweet us on Twitter: http://go.nowth.is/News_Twitter » Follow us on Instagram: http://go.nowth.is/News_Instagram » Find us on Snapchat Discover: http://go.nowth.is/News_Snapchat NowThis is your premier news outlet providing you with all the videos you need to stay up to date on all the latest in trending news. Girls in STEM

07:16
The need for women in STEM is rising as the technology has rapidly transformed the way we live and women are still under presented in STEM fields. Is it because of the stereotypical image of what a “tech person” and “Engineer” or a “Scientist” look like ? Associating this topic we invited 3 young women who are the students of B.Sc Computer Science and Software engineering of Patan College for Professional Studies’ wherein they talk about importance of Women in STEM education and their challenges, insights and experiences as a student of information technology. #BeautifulMinds We Welcome any creative ideas and/or creative minds and/or hidden treasure to be a part of this program. “SciGirls” TV series encourages girls to succeed in STEM - Science Nation

03:22
Real-world STEM adventures inspire millions of girls through the power of media The magic of life unfolds, but for adolescents Mimi, Izzie and Quinn, watching a monarch butterfly emerge from its cocoon and spread its wings is more than a fascinating moment--cameras are rolling! With support from the National Science Foundation (NSF), Richard Hudson and his team at Twin Cities Public Television are putting middle school girls in front of a national audience on the PBS series "SciGirls." This is the first television science series designed specifically for girls, ages 8 to 12, to inspire and empower them to consider careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Each episode features different girls doing their own science investigations and engineering projects, accompanied by two animated characters. In the new season, premiering in April 2015, the SciGirls work together as citizen scientists and share their findings with professional scientists. The approach of the show is based on gender research and best practices for STEM education for girls. The innovative format of the show also forges a unique link to the website, which is an integral part of the TV show. The show features mentor Kelly Nail working with the girls. She is part of another NSF-funded project, Driven to Discover, a University of Minnesota effort designed to engage 12-to-14-year-old youth and their adult mentors in authentic research. The research in this episode was funded by NSF award #1114739, SciGirls TV Series, Website and Outreach - Season Two NSF Grant URL: http://www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/showAward?AWD_ID=1114739&HistoricalAwards=false Miles O'Brien, Science Nation Correspondent Marsha Walton, Science Nation Producer

Museum of Discovery's Girls in STEM Program

03:14
Girls in STEM gives participants a FREE week-long opportunity to explore STEM careers as they engage in hands-on activities led by female STEM professionals, ultimately encouraging them to continue their STEM studies and even pursue STEM careers. The Museum of Discovery has made this program a priority as there continues to be a major gender gap in STEM careers with men far outnumbering women. A 2016 study by the National Science Foundation found the greatest disparities occurring in engineering, computer science and the physical sciences. For example: 35.2 percent of chemists are women; 11.1 percent of physicists and astronomers are women; 33.8 percent of environmental engineers are women; 22.7 percent of chemical engineers are women; 17.5 percent of civil, architectural and sanitary engineers are women; 17.1 percent of industrial engineers are women; 10.7 percent of electrical or computer hardware engineers are women; and 7.9 percent of mechanical engineers are women.
