How to Engage More Girls in STEM

03:45
Just a few decades ago, it was a rare sight to see a woman working in a #STEM field (science, technology, engineering, mathematics). Today, while more common, women are still outnumbered 3 to 1 by their male counterparts. Based on scientific research, we've identified five actions that will help engage more girls in STEM. EPI is implementing these initiatives into its daily work as part of its #STEM4Good campaign. And you can, too. How to get girls to like STEM: Heidi Olinger at TEDxBocaRaton

11:57
The U.S. needs the contributions of all of our thinkers and problem-solvers. By the numbers girls make up more than one-half of our home-grown talent base — the half we have discouraged in STEM/science, technology, engineering and math. In this inspiring talk, education expert Heidi Olinger outlines the four things we must do to engage girls in STEM right now in the Digital Age, when neither girls nor the nation can afford to be STEM illiterate. Inspiring the next generation of female engineers | Debbie Sterling | TEDxPSU

17:09
Close your eyes and picture and engineer. You probably weren't envisioning Debbie Sterling. Debbie Sterling is an engineer and founder of GoldieBlox, a toy company out to inspire the next generation of female engineers. She has made it her mission in life to tackle the gender gap in science, technology, engineering and math. GoldieBlox is a book series+construction set that engages kids to build through the story of Goldie, the girl inventor who solves problems by building simple machines. Debbie writes and illustrates Goldie's stories, taking inspiration from her grandmother, one of the first female cartoonists and creator of ""Mr. Magoo."" Her company, launched in 2012, raised over $285,000 in 30 days through Kickstarter, and has been featured in numerous publications such as The Atlantic and Forbes. Prior to founding GoldieBlox, Debbie served as the Marketing Director of Lori Bonn, a national jewelry company. For the past 7 years, she has also served as a brand strategy consultant for a wide variety of organizations including Microsoft, T-Mobile, Organic Valley and the New York Knicks. Debbie's inspiration to create a mission-driven company came in 2008, when she spent 6 months volunteering at a grassroots nonprofit in rural India. She created a viral fundraising campaign called ""I Want a Goat,"" raising over $30,000 for economic and educational development in the region. This experience helped pave the way to finding her true passion: inspiring the next generation of female engineers. Debbie completed her degree in engineering at Stanford (Product Design, '05) and currently lives with her husband in San Francisco. Girls and STEM

03:41
How often have you heard a student say "I'm not good at math or science?" University of Washington researchers have learned that girls in particular draw conclusions about their science and technology abilities much earlier than anyone suspected – even by the time they start elementary school. We speak with a researcher about ways to boost girls' interest in science and technology. Sapna Cheryan, associate professor, Department of Psychology, UW Beatriz Medel Martinez, freshman, UW Karla Herpoldt, postdoctoral fellow, UW Institute for Protein Design Brooke Fiala, research scientist/engineer, Biochemistry, UW 10/30/17 http://uwtv.org

Museum of Discovery's Girls in STEM Program

03:14
Girls in STEM gives participants a FREE week-long opportunity to explore STEM careers as they engage in hands-on activities led by female STEM professionals, ultimately encouraging them to continue their STEM studies and even pursue STEM careers. The Museum of Discovery has made this program a priority as there continues to be a major gender gap in STEM careers with men far outnumbering women. A 2016 study by the National Science Foundation found the greatest disparities occurring in engineering, computer science and the physical sciences. For example: 35.2 percent of chemists are women; 11.1 percent of physicists and astronomers are women; 33.8 percent of environmental engineers are women; 22.7 percent of chemical engineers are women; 17.5 percent of civil, architectural and sanitary engineers are women; 17.1 percent of industrial engineers are women; 10.7 percent of electrical or computer hardware engineers are women; and 7.9 percent of mechanical engineers are women. The need for women in STEM is rising as the technology has rapidly transformed the way we live and women are still under presented in STEM fields. Is it because of the stereotypical image of what a “tech person” and “Engineer” or a “Scientist” look like ? Associating this topic we invited 3 young women who are the students of B.Sc Computer Science and Software engineering of Patan College for Professional Studies’ wherein they talk about importance of Women in STEM education and their challenges, insights and experiences as a student of information technology. #BeautifulMinds We Welcome any creative ideas and/or creative minds and/or hidden treasure to be a part of this program. The impact of Science and Technology on every aspect of our world is inescapable. With only 25% of working women in the STEM workforce, women are underrepresented in the critical work of building the future. Research has shown that boys and girls perform equally in math at the elementary level, but by age 12, girls begin to lose interest in math and sciences. What are the key factors that drive this loss of interest? How do girls perceive STEM and can their perceptions be changed? What can individuals and corporations do to increase the female talent pipeline for STEM? Abi shares current research and discusses effective contributions we can all make to engage girls in STEM and sustain their participation over the long term. Abi Olukeye is the founder of Smart Girls HQ, an organization focused on increasing female participation in the STEM pipeline along the K to 12 learning path. Abi brings her personal experiences as a woman in Technology to her work. Mostly recently, she led IOT strategy development and digital transformation projects at a diversified manufacturing company. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from Virginia Tech and MBA from Indiana University. She has two young daughters of her own who greatly inspire her to create pathways for girls to succeed at STEM.

Encouraging Girls in STEM | 3D Design & Printing | Makers Empire | Design Thinking

04:39
The shortage of women in STEM careers and STEM fields has been well documented. In this short video, Makers Empire explains why teaching girls to develop an interest in and love of STEM in elementary and primary school is essential to address the imbalance. Girls that enjoy STEM grow into young women who may then go on to study STEM subjects in high school and a STEM-related degree at college or university. This provides a pathway to a career in a STEM-related field. But without positive and early exposure to STEM, girls can miss out altogether on developing a rich and rewarding career in a STEM-related field. So getting girls interested in STEM at a young age is critical for solving this gender imbalance in STEM. Read more about encouraging Girls in STEM at https://www.makersempire.com/girls-in-stem-3d-design-printing-shortage-women-stem/ About Makers Empire Makers Empire helps K-8 schools harness the power of 3D printing to teach important STEM concepts, 21st-century learning skills and design thinking in a fun and engaging way.
