SEADS - Sea Defence Solutions presents the Blue Barriers
An innovative but simple solution to Ocean Plastic Pollution. These floating barriers stop plastic waste flowing in rivers collecting them before they reach our Ocean. Removing plastic from the Oceans is extremely challenging and impossible for all the plastic that to quickly break down into smaller pieces. We must stop them at the source!

FARMAGEDDON -- Solutions from the Sea
“Feeding the world of the future.” At Wageningen University in the Netherlands, scientists are researching how algae and seaweed are proving to be more efficient and sustainable than soya in providing protein for farm animals – and people. Over a three-year period, Philip Lymbery (CEO of Compassion in World Farming) has travelled the world bearing witness to the hidden cost of cheap meat and the devastating impact of factory farming – on people, animals and our planet. The findings of this journey are brought together for the very first time in Farmageddon (published by Bloomsbury). Farmageddon is now available to order online and in all good bookshops: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/1408846446/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1634&creative=6738&creativeASIN=1408846446&linkCode=as2&tag=compinworlfar-21 Help us stop factory farming. 🌏 Farming underwater: 3D solutions for land and sea | Earthrise
Food production is facing challenges that require new, more creative and sustainable solutions. Companies involved in various segments of the industry, including agriculture and fishing, are looking at revolutionising the current systems, which have left bodies of water overfished and land in terrible condition. On Long Island in New York, locals are tackling overfishing by using a new system that brings industries together. Fishermen and scientists have collaborated to realise and improve 3D farming. 3D ocean farming is a system that grows a mix of seaweed crops and shellfish - including mussels and oysters - under the water's surface. This polyculture vertical farming system requires zero input because the sea plants filter and sequester carbon, making it, at this moment, the most sustainable means of food production on the planet. "Imagine an underwater garden where you’re using the entire water column which means we have very small footprints," tells ocean farmer Bren Smith. Additionally, this system also sequesters carbon and rebuilds the reef's ecosystem. The crops and shellfish grown underwater can be used as food, fertiliser, animal feed and even energy. In this way, climate change can be tackled while producing food, i.e. the food itself is the water filter. "[mussels are] really lean proteins packed full of omega 3s, but also soak up and use nitrogen to grow... this farm filters millions of gallons of water a week and oysters filter up to 50 gallons a day," Smith says. "We have to tell a story, a helpful story about the future. You know, it's all bad news about climate change and food security. I think out here we can say our oceans are a blank slate and we really have a chance to really build something new, and build something from the bottom up that's sustainable and restorative and doesn't make all the mistakes of industrial agriculture or aquaculture," Smith explains.

Migrants at sea -- high expectations, limited solutions.
ED4BG 2014 Advances in technology are allowing both more surveillance of borders and greater data exchange about long and short term migrant flows. A good example of such a pan-European information exchange is Eurosur. At the same time, the increasing information transparency of migrant flows often does not translate into the ability of responsible authorities to make use of it. Consequently it leads somewhat ironically to greater attention to migrant flows without corresponding rises in effectiveness of actual border control and search and rescue measures. Both media exposure and daily experience of some of these technologies is also raising expectations on the part of Europeans and their political leaders about how much actual control of maritime borders is possible today. This panel discussed these linked dilemmas of changing control and surveillance technologies, increasing information transparency, limited applicability and availability of many technologies in border regions, all in the face of rising popular expectations about technology's possible role in effective and efficient EU border control.

The Salton Sea: Salinity, Shrinkage, Solutions
October 11, 2017 Sullivan Memorial Lecture Sponsored by the Robert Redford Conservancy for Southern California Sustainability The future of the Salton Sea, California’s largest yet fast shrinking lake, continues to be debated as an indispensable wetland for migratory birds, an unfolding toxic catastrophe with dire environmental justice consequences and an artificial ecosystem of our own creation. Regardless of the various perceptions swirling about the lake, its increasing levels of salinity and dropping water levels pose a wicked environmental challenge, not only for those living in its vicinity but for all Californians concerned about social and ecological well-being. A panel of experts and activists who contend with the environmental challenges posed by the Salton Sea on a daily basis, and who are charged with charting a path forward. Malissa McKeith is a partner and chair emerita of the Los Angeles-based legal firm Lewis Brisbois and co-founder and president of Citizens United for Resources and the Environment, Inc., a grassroots organization that empowers local communities to form multidisciplinary alliances to demand accountability in government decisions involving natural resources and land use. A veteran environmental attorney, McKeith earned her BA in political science from UCLA and a law degree from the University of San Francisco. Kerry F. Morrison co-founded The EcoMedia Compass, an environmental education nonprofit dedicated to bringing awareness and education for environmental solutions through music, art, science and community. Morrison, who earned a degree in multimedia communications/public relations from California State University, Fullerton, and CSU San Marcos, spends most of his time at the Salton Sea, fascinated by the unique beauty, biodiversity and need for help surrounding the region. Phillip Johnson is Assistant Executive Director of the Salton Sea Authority. He serves as Chair of the Salton Sea Management Program’s Long Range Planning Committee and specializes in developing the legislative and policy strategies to address the range of concerns surrounding the Sea. Chris Shoeneman is the manager of the Sonny Bono Salton Sea National Wildlife Refuge, which was established in 1930 as a sanctuary and breeding ground for birds and other wildlife. After earning his degree in wildlife management from Humboldt State University, Shoeneman started his career with the US Fish and Wildlife Service in 1988. Shoeneman, who grew up in Southern California, says managing wetlands in the West for maximum wildlife value has been his favorite challenge.

The 20-Year-Old With a Plan to Rid the Sea of Plastic
Subscribe to MOTHERBOARD: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-To-MOTHERBOARD Boyan Slat's story is not quite that of a 20-year-old Wunderkind who magically found a potential fix to a longstanding problem. It's perhaps more accurately described as a combination of personal dedication and trial and error. When going through his old prototypes for a technology that would passively scrub oceans of plastic, he's almost embarrassed of his early concepts. "But that's what science is really," Slat said. "It's a work in progress." The crowdfunding campaign behind Slat's Ocean Cleanup Project was announced with strong bidding, no matter: "With two million dollars we can make a theoretical concept come true." With just two days left in his campaign, Slat successfully collected the funding for his project, bringing him one step closer to realizing a vision of plastic-free oceans.
