The Cold war was a time of espionage between the CIA and KGB and other organisations. Technology played a key role in an agent's inventory, gadgets were well disguised and portable some were even deadly. April 8th 1950. Soviet Pilot Anatolij Gerasimov has the US Navy PB 4Y2 Privateer neatly positioned in his sights and fires the guns of his fighter plane. The Lavochkin 11 shudders, and a hail of bullets hits the giant American four-engined spy plane. Airmen bail out of the fatally damaged Privateer, parachutes blossom. While a Soviet rescue operation swings into operation, Gerasimov and his 3 wingmen return to their base to sign the pilot reports prepared for them, which assert the deliberate lie that the plane exploded - with no survivors. During the cold war more than 150 American airmen were killed in clandestine spyflight operations. There was a full-blown secret air war in the 1950´s. Only one case is well known, both the tip and of the iceberg and the last instance: the shooting down of Gary Powers' U2 over Sverdlovsk. But this was the last overflight. Not because the Americans feared Soviet air defence, but because they had developed a better tool: the spy satellite. The day Powers was sentenced in Moscow, the first successful spy satellite was launched and placed in orbit. In recent years more and more facts about the spy missions of the secret air war have emerged. The full truth is still not known, but what has bubbled to the surface is startling enough. Some historians argue that staunch hawks in the American military tried to start World War 3 with their spyflight missions. Because of these allegations the US government decided to commission a historian to gather facts about these missions. Although it may be naive to believe that a US government historian would deliver the whole truth, as opposed to a portion of the truth relating to pre-selected cases, a new and more complete picture is now available. And although some evidence has emerged to counter the claim that warmongering generals mounted rogue missions, there are still disturbing questions. Some of the flights in question could best be described as intentionally provocative. The secret air war of the superpowers shows the outline of the operations and reports facts never previously published. There is an account of how secret agents were dropped by the CIA in Soviet satellite states - hundreds of them - in missions that failed entirely. A still well-kept secret of the Cold War. On camera for the first time ever one of the pilots involved in these drops talks the operations. Other highlights: a crew member from a reconnaissance flight over Eastern Block countries recounts his experiences with intercepting Migs. His flight still never took place, officially. And the pilot of the first ever spy flight over the Soviet Union provides a dramatic account of how he just managed to his battle-scarred plane to England. ---- This channel offers you full episodes of high quality documentaries. A small video made from clips of my trip to Hope Cove Nuclear Bunker aka RAF Bolts Head. SubBrit: Hope Cove was a World War II radar station. In the early 1950s it was revamped as part of the RAF's Rotor air defence scheme. It was one of five stations equipped with a type R6 (semi-sunk) bunker. The others were Hack Green, Langtoft, St. Twynells and Treleaver. The video was recorded in Feb 2010 quite dated now. It was arranged trip from the then owner, I believe its been sold on now.

For 50 years, Berlin was the symbol of the Cold War. The city at the heart of the intelligence war between the US and the Soviet bloc. Thousands of KGB or CIA, agents observed each other, cogs in the biggest information war in history. But the war between the secret services was one dimension of a much larger conflict. A confrontation that almost boiled over just under the surface of the cold war. Economic pressures, secret diplomacy and espionage were the hallmarks of this hidden war that never turn into armed conflict. An underground war between two institutions, without the knowledge of official diplomacy. We hear from former CIA and KGB agents and discover the hidden face of the cold war. Immediately after World War II, long range aerial reconnaissance was taken up by adapted jet bombers – such as the English Electric Canberra, and its American development, the Martin B-57 – capable of flying higher or faster than the enemy. About the book: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0374117470/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0374117470&linkCode=as2&tag=tra0c7-20&linkId=719dfa4f4de7afdb68f267dea96898af After the Korean War, RB-47 aircraft were used. These were at first converted B-47 jet bombers, but later these were purposely built RB-47 reconnaissance planes. They did not carry any bombs. They had large cameras mounted in the belly of the plane, and with a truncated bomb bay used for carrying photo-flash bombs. The onset of the Cold War led the development of highly specialized and secretive strategic reconnaissance aircraft, or spy planes, such as the Lockheed U-2 and its successor, the SR-71 Blackbird (both from the United States). Flying these aircraft became an exceptionally demanding task, as much because of the aircraft's extreme speed and altitude as it was because of the risk of being captured as spies. As a result, the crews of these aircraft were invariably specially selected and trained. There are claims that the US constructed a hypersonic reconnaissance aircraft, dubbed the Aurora, in the late 1980s to replace the Blackbird. Since the early 1960s, in the United States aerial and satellite reconnaissance has been coordinated by the National Reconnaissance Office. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aerial_reconnaissance Between 1946 and 1960, the United States Army Air Forces conducted aerial reconnaissance flights over the Soviet Union in order to determine the size, composition, and disposition of Soviet forces. Aircraft used included the Boeing B-47 Stratojet bomber and, from 1956, the Lockheed U-2 plane specifically designed for high-altitude reconnaissance. The program was ended following the U-2 incident of 1960. Reconnaissance flights began in 1946 along the borders of the Soviet Union and other Socialist Bloc states. The necessity of peacetime overflights was reinforced after the escalation of the Cold War in the late 1940s and, in particular, after the Korea War started in 1950. US President Harry S. Truman authorized selected overflights of the Soviet Union in order to determine the status of its air forces. It was feared that the Soviets might launch a surprise aerial attack on the United States with long-range bombers. Following the 1960 U-2 incident, Eisenhower ordered an end to American reconnaissance flights into the USSR. This policy was upheld by President Kennedy, who in 25 January 1961 told a press conference, "I have ordered that the flights not be resumed, which is a continuation of the order given by President Eisenhower in May of last year". In 1964 CIA head John A. McCone emphasized to the Johnson administration the orders were not a pledge barring further flights, but simply a directive that the flights not be resumed, one which can be countermanded. As there was no strategic situation requiring photography, Johnson elected to continue the policy. This was further reinforced by the rise in satellite reconnaissance. In spite of the formal end to reconnaissance efforts, Project Dark Gene, a CIA-Iranian program of intrusions into Soviet airspace to explore Soviet air defence systems, continued up to 1979. The US also remained involved in reconnaissance of mainland China into the 1970s using Taiwan U-2 overflights. More than 40 US aircraft were downed by Soviet forces and about 200 US servicemen were killed. Their families were given misinformation by the US military about how they died. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_aerial_reconnaissance_of_the_Soviet_Union

All things military/guns/weapons/war aren't normally my thing, but this visit to a former secret Soviet nuclear missile base in Plateliai, Lithuania was spooky, scary, fascinating and will stay with me for a long time. If war history/nuclear weapons is your thing, then a visit to this Cold War Museum is an absolute must. It's even worth the journey for a day trip from a stop in the Baltic cruise port of Klaipeda. This review video will show you exactly how the process of pressing that button and firing off a nuclear missile works and what the release of the missile would have looked like. http://www.lithuania.travel/en-gb/ http://www.truelithuania.com/tag/cold-war-museum

On the 29th of August 1949, the USSR set off their first atomic bomb, just four years after the Americans. The speed with which they achieved this surprised the world. What nobody knew was that it was the result of espionage. At the centre of the operation was a very unusual female spy, Elizabeth Zaroubin, in a story worthy of the best KGB spy novels ever written. A nuclear submarine is a submarine powered by a nuclear reactor. The performance advantages of nuclear submarines over "conventional" (typically diesel-electric) submarines are considerable. Nuclear propulsion, being completely independent of air, frees the submarine from the need to surface frequently, as is necessary for conventional submarines. The large amount of power generated by a nuclear reactor allows nuclear submarines to operate at high speed for long periods of time; and the long interval between refuelings grants a range limited only by consumables such as food. Current generations of nuclear submarines never need to be refueled throughout their 25-year lifespans. Conversely, the limited power stored in electric batteries means that even the most advanced conventional submarine can only remain submerged for a few days at slow speed, and only a few hours at top speed; recent advances in air-independent propulsion have somewhat eroded this disadvantage. The high cost of nuclear technology means that relatively few states have fielded nuclear submarines. Some of the most serious nuclear and radiation accidents ever to occur have involved Soviet nuclear submarine mishaps. Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_submarine

http://www.euronews.com/ Norway has revealed one its deepest Cold War secrets. During the chilly period, Oslo commissioned the construction of a modern coastal military defence facility to protect itself against the possibility of Soviet attack. The base in Herdla, on Askøy Island near Bergen, is assured of a more peaceful future as it due to open to the public in the summer. It is one of four clandestine bases built during the Cold War at a cost of billions of kroner. Gunner Furre is the museum director: "It is very exciting to be able to tell young people about this, the daily threat we lived under during this period," Furre said. The frosty relations between US/NATO and the Soviet Union lasted from 1945 to 1991. A secret Cold War nuclear bunker which was considered the 'first defence against the Russians' and could accommodate 400 politicians underground will open to the public. The historic bunker in Barnton Quarry, near Edinburgh, was built in the 1950s in the midst of fear of Soviet power - and remained a secret until the 1980s. Deep underground in Corstorphine Hill, four miles from the capital, it served as Sector Operations Centre for co-coordinating RAF fighter jets and protected Scotland from attack by Russian long-range nuclear bombers until around 1960. It was used as a control centre where information was analysed, and became a base for a radar air defence system.
