STITCHING FOR BEGINNERS | SEA STAR PATTERN

03:33
This is a very easy beginner's stitching project. You can free hand a sea star or download a pattern for this project. I used Holland felt in 100% wool in the color Tea Rose. Cut two sea star shapes. Line them up so they are the same. Use embroidery thread in a the color of your choice to stitch the edges using a blanket stitch. You can separate the embroidery thread for it to be thinner. After stitching one arm you can beginning filling it with filler. I used wool, but you could use anything from fill from an old pillow to cotton balls. Alternatively, you could add some details to one side of the sea star before stitching it together. I found this to be quite time consuming and had my kids skip this step. My 11-year-old son opted to do it anyway, but only did some bumpy stitching around the center. Starfish facts: 11 facts about Sea Stars

03:34
Here are 11 facts about starfish or sea stars as they are now called to help gain a better understanding about them. All images used courtesy of wikipedia All videos used under creative commons license. Starfish https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Ll74xmyIlk Pink Starfish Rescue https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wNj_Ktf_sEI Synopsis 11. The Sea Star is the alternative name for a starfish as it is not a fish but an echinoderm and it is related to sand dollars or sea urchins. 10. Around the oceans of the world there are around 2000 species of sea star living in all kinds of climates, from warm to cold waters. 9. The five armed species of sea star are the most common, but there are species that have many more arms. In fact, there are some that have up to 40 arms. 8. Sea stars have calcified and bony skin which gives them protection from predators. Different species have different colourings including many species that have striking colours so as to warn off predators. 7. They are strictly saltwater creatures and do not survive in freshwater. 6. Sea stars have the ability to regenerate their limbs and in some cases can regenerate their entire bodies. They can do this as they have most if not all of their vital organs in their arms. However, this does not happen quickly and it will take about a year for a limb to grow back. 5. Some species of sea stars need to have their main body in tact in order to regenerate their arms. 4. However their are some species that need just some of their severed limbs to be intact in order to grow a whole new body. 3. The majority of sea stars have the amazing ability to eat their prey outside of their bodies. They use small suction cupped tubed feet to open up the oysters and clams that they eat and their stomach then emerges from their mouths and their arms prise open the shell just enough and their stomach then enters it and digests it. Then the stomach then returns to the body. So basically they eat inside out, and this allows them to eat larger prey than they would normally be able to fit into their mouths. 2. Sea stars do not have blood in their bodies. Instead, they have a water vascular system where they pump sea water through its sift plate or majoporite into their tube feet. Their tube feet are full of sea water and give strength to them. They then use their tube feet to move and to hold their prey. 1. They have an anae spot and the end of each of their arms which is a very simple eye that looks like a red spot. The eye can sense dark and light but not a lot of detail.

SEA S.T.A.R. Intern End of Summer Project Presentations - The Marine Science Consortium

Jessica For my legacy project I am going to make an informational brochure on the wild ponies of Assateague Island. Just about everyone has heard of these famous ponies. They have either read or seen the movie Misty of Chincoteague or maybe they have been to the pony roundup. But what makes these ponies different from any other equine? How did they get there? What do they eat on the Island? How do they live? These are questions I would like to answer in my project. In order to get facts, I will also make calls, and send e-mails, to places such as The National Chincoteague Pony Association, the famous "Salt Water Cowboys", and The Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. I will also be getting information by using the internet and by reading some books to learn more about them. I will then put all that I have gathered into my brochure that we can hand out to anyone who wants to learn more about the ponies. This brochure can also be used by employees if they want to share some of these facts with their group. I will first research the breed of ponies. I will learn all I can about them; their history up to the present, how they live, ect. I will also take some pictures of the ponies that will be added to the brochure as a visual aid. RESEARCH OR LEGACY PROJECT During the course of the internship, the Program Coordinator will work with each intern to design a research or legacy project that interests them. Interns will have scheduled times during week to work on their research or legacy project. If an intern chooses to do a research project they will be responsible for creating a research project relating to the marine science or coastal environments in some way. If an intern chooses to do a legacy project they will be responsible for creating or implementing a project that benefits the mission of the Marine Science Consortium in some way. At the end of the summer, interns are required to give a Power Point presentation describing their research or legacy project, techniques and processes learned, and how the experience was useful to the student both academically and personally. The interns meet periodically with the Program Coordinator to prepare and review the content of the oral presentations. To aid interns in the completion of their research project, the following opportunities will be available to them during their stay. • Interns will be able to sit in on college level marine science courses and meet college professors. • Interns will have the opportunity to work with MSC partners (NASA Wallops Flight Facility, US Fish and Wildlife Service, National Park Service, Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge and faculty from some of the MSC's 13 Member Universities) • Interns will have opportunities to work on one of the MSC two monitor boats, the R.V. Flatfish and R.V. Mollusk. Both are approximately 40 ft in length and are used primarily in the tidal creeks and Back Bay areas for trawling and sampling. • Interns will be able to attend a college level sampling trip on an ocean going Research Vessel. The R.V. Phillip N. Parker is a 47ft diesel powered crew vessel used for cruises beyond the inlet and up to 25 miles off shore. RESEARCH OR LEGACY PROJECT PRESENTATION- During the last week of the internship, each intern will make a presentation of approximately ten to twenty minutes to all the interns and staff members in their groups during one final meeting. This presentation will summarize what the intern has learned during the internship and should include two types of visual aids such as a PowerPoint presentation, poster or "chalk talk".

SEA S.T.A.R. Intern End of Summer Project Presentations - The Marine Science Consortium

Cecila - Holden Creek Study For my research project I will be sampling salinity levels along the upper (more freshwater) region of Holden's creek. I will be taking samples at high tide to determine how far up the salt water goes, as well as other data such as temperature and dissolved oxygen levels of the water up the creek. In addition, I will use photos to help identify species along the creek at the points where I take the data to determine whether/how the changing salinity affects the flora of the area. I will also pay attention to clues along the edge of the creek and stumps found in the creek to gain clues to how the creek has changed over time. My purpose is to observe and estimate the effects of rising ocean water on freshwater creeks that drain into a saltwater area. The rise in water was one foot over the last century and is expected to be around three feet this coming century. This rise is too much for many wetland areas to handle, so they must move or be obliterated entirely. I want to observe what is already happening in terms of plants moving and get an idea for the profile of the creek as it transitions from slightly salty water to fresh. Creepy Sea Creatures: Brittle star; Sea Cucumber; Sea Snake; Crabs; Urchins and More/Science Project

Science Project: Creepy Sea Creatures: Brittle star; Sea Cucumber; Sea Snake; Crabs; Urchins and More/Science Project Out homeschooling topic was about the creatures that lives in different tidal zones of the sea. We travelled to one of our favorite beaches; hopped from one island to another to look for as many creatures that we have not seen before in their natural habitat. We have seen starfish before and we had shared with you how it moves. We have also seen urchins, sea cucumber and crabs in Ocean Park and Ocean Adventure but we have never seen a long sea snake and a brittle star. The animals you will see are seen from different islands. Although these islands are relatively near each other, we have to hop from one to another on a boat. Some of the creatures are scary. Some are lovely and attractive. The urchins are prickly - you have to be careful with every step you make while on the parts that there are lots of sea plants. We consider this homeschooling project in science as one of our favorites. We had put much effort on this. We hope you will enjoy and learn from it. #Oceananimals #learnwithoceananimals Throwback travel vlog, kids channel, homeschooling, #CreepySeaCreatures,Brittlestar,Sea Cucumber,Sea Snake,Crabs,Sea Cucumber,Sea Snake,Urchins,Science Project, homeschooling project, school science project, biology project, scary sea creature, toots teens videos, travel vlog,Philippine sea,Philippine travel, limitless learning, fun wild kids, animals in the wild, animals in their natural habitat, #scienceproject #creepyseacreature #brittlestar #oceananimals

SEA S.T.A.R. Intern End of Summer Project Presentations - The Marine Science Consortium

Iman - For my project I will be working at the boat basin in NASA. What this will entail will be water testing to see what location best matches, if any, the general parameters to sustain life in order to establish a fishery there. The end goal, if conditions allow, would be to place animal 'boxes' designed to hold fish or invertebrates in their natural environment, the ocean, that would involve minimum maintenance. These holding pens would be designed to allow for the animals to maneuver easily, obtain food from the environment and avoid predators. The First half of this project will require water quality testing. Conditions will have to be tested at high and low tides and if time permits, a flood and ebbing tides. Different distances from the shore will be tested to see which area has the best conditions. The tests to be conducted will require a myriad of equipment such as refractometer, creysole red, YSI meters and other tools in order to test water quality parameters. The parameters that will be most important to match will be salinity, pH, and oxygen. Other important factors include: temperature, water flow, nitrates and a possible food source(plankton tow). Another possible test would be a trawl or seine(depending on depths tested) to see if any animals live in the area or if it is uninhabited. If no animals live in the area, it would be an indication that the area is uninhabitable. Whatever creatures live in the area will aid in deciding what species, if any, could live in any animal boxes made. These procedures would be used in three two five different locations to test for an ideal location for the placement of the animal boxes. SEA S.T.A.R. Intern End of Summer Project Presentations - The Marine Science Consortium

20:33
Andrew Morgenstern and Shirli Cohen Greenbackville Marsh Study Project Goals The primary goal of our research project is to help find a practical method to control the mosquito population in the Greenbackville saltwater marsh in order to restore the marsh to a healthy state. We will collect data on the current mosquito population and on the rate of predation of mosquito larvae by fish. Mummichogs were chosen as the subject predator because they are extremely resilient and can survive in water with very low dissolved oxygen levels, which we may encounter in the marsh. Researching the mosquito population is important to the environment because the species of mosquito indicates the health of the marsh. A well-functioning salt marsh should be a habitat for saltwater mosquitoes; not freshwater mosquitoes. An out of control mosquito population also poses a danger to the health of the human population in Greenbackville because they rapidly transfer pathogens. Greenbackville Greenbackville is located on the coast of Chincoteague Bay, just south of the Maryland-Virginia border. It is a deteriorating saltwater marsh with a very high mosquito population. Methods In order to collect data, we will create a cubic enclosure with side lengths of 15 inches each, made of ½" PVC pipes, plankton netting, and window screening. We will test the water quality of various pools in order to determine their viability for mummichogs, which will be rescued from the marsh where they may have otherwise died. These fish will be relocated to ponds and tanks where they will be fed and survive. We will partially submerge the enclosure in each of the adequate pools and insert two mummichogs and 50 mL of mosquito larvae. We will record the rate of consumption of the mosquito larvae within given time intervals and note whether the varying conditions in each of the pools affect this data. Materials ● Mosquito Larvae ● ½" PVC pipes and connectors ● Plankton netting ● Window screening ● Mummichogs ● Thermometer ● YSI Expected Outcomes We expect that the mummichogs will consume the mosquito larvae at a very high rate. If the water quality improves enough to sustain a population of mummichogs, they will serve as a viable tool to use against the overpopulation of mosquitoes in the Greenbackville salt marsh. Starfish facts for kids - facts about sea star for children - Simply E-learn Kids

03:02
Starfish facts for kids, preschool and kindergarten. Know about life of starfish / sea star. It is fun presenting facts on the starfish as children are always interested in knowing new things. The starfish is a kind of organism that can keep them interested and occupied for a long time, as there are at least 2,000 types of it known to man. Marine scientists have named it as Protoreaster Nodosus for their use. A starfish has no scales, fins, or gills like other fish have to acquire oxygen from the water, and it can't actually swim. For this reason, even though it has 'fish' in its name, marine biology does not consider it as a fish. Details about the Starfish The starfish is also known as the 'Sea Star', which is a more apt name for it. It looks like a star in the sky but belongs to the sea. It comes in different colors and sizes. The body has, depending on its type, 5 to 40 arms attached to it. Whoever named it starfish maybe didn't know that it can actually walk. If you turn one on its back, you can see as many as 15,000 tube feet attached to its arms. These feet end in suction pads which are attached to a surface to climb or crawl on. This animal belongs with the other marine animals such as the Sea Urchins, Sand Dollar, and Sea Cucumbers, which are classified under phylum Echinodermata and class Asteroidea. Anyone interested in their anatomy will find that their body plan can be described as a central body and 5 sections arranged around it. The term echinodermata is used for organisms that have spiny skin. The skin on the upper side is made up of calcium carbonate plates. The presence of spine-like structures protect the starfish from its enemies. Fish, sea otters, birds, and man are its natural enemies. It eats food such as shellfish. It uses its tube feet for catching it. On an average, it grows to a length of about 8 inches (from the tip of one arm to the tip of the arm on the opposite side of its body). However, some have been reported to be as big as 3 meters in length. It has two stomachs. One of them opens as the mouth in the center of the underside of its body. The mouth can protrude outside and extend to gobble up the food and pass it to the other stomach, which digests it. Oysters, clams, worms, sea urchins, and crustaceans comprise its food. It uses its tube feet and other tubes that are present all over its body to breathe in air. Most starfish have the ability to regenerate arms, in case they lose one or two in an attack by some predator. Each arm tip has some special cells that can detect whether it is light or dark outside. This animal is found in all the oceans of the world. However, it prefers coastal areas, coral reefs, and warm, shallow waters. A female starfish can lay as many as 2 million eggs. Of these, the number of eggs laid at a time varies between 1-1.3 million. The eggs, when fertilized by the male, become larvae. This stage in their life cycle lasts for 3 weeks, and then they start changing to assume their characteristic star shape. The most amazing thing about them is that they can change their gender as and when required. If the conditions such as temperature, availability of food, etc., are favorable, a number of male starfish change their gender and lay eggs in an effort increase their population. Not all the eggs that are laid manage to survive. Many of them are eaten by other fish and marine animals, which prevents an uncontrollable rise in their population. Global warming and pollution of the sea water is threatening the habitat of these marine creatures. Just like the corals, these fantastic sea animals are losing the battle of survival. Hence, efforts should be made to save them. Starfish Story (aka The Star Thrower)

01:11
This video is a modern adaptation of the “Starfish Story” originally written by Loren Eiseley in 1969. It’s a story about how important making a difference in people's lives, even if it is just one. It's a great video to encourage teachers, fostering families, and adoption parents. Below is the script for the video: "One day a man was walking along the beach, when he noticed a boy picking up starfish and throwing them into the ocean. Approaching the boy, he asked, “Excuse me, but what are you doing?" The boy replied, “Throwing starfish back into the ocean. The sun is rising and tide is going out. If I don’t throw them back, they’ll die.” The man laughed to himself and said, “But there's too many starfish on this beach. You can’t possibly make a difference!” After listening politely, the boy bent down, picked up another starfish and threw it into the ocean. Then, turning to the man, he said, " 'I made a difference to that one.' " ............................................................................................................... This was a project I was honored to partner with Corona Life Services, which is a non-profit that devotes their efforts to supporting and educating mothers who don’t know what to do after they found they’re pregnant. They told me about the “Starfish Story” and I loved it immediately. I looked it up online to see if there were any videos on YouTube or Vimeo already made, but surprisingly there weren’t any decent videos other than PowerPoint slides with text and cheesy music. The story needed to be portrayed properly, so I adapted the story to fit today’s audience and had a vision of how the video would turn out. After making a shot list, I coordinated with some dear friends to join me on a super early morning shoot at Laguna Beach at 6am. The reason is because I didn’t want to see any other people on the beach other than these two characters. Plus the lighting was soft and exactly what I wanted since the sun hadn’t risen yet. It was a really simple shoot. I didn’t want to be too artsy with my shots because it was a simple story with a powerful lesson at end. I didn’t want to take away from what Loren Eiseley intended for his story. I filmed on my Canon 6D with the Canon 24-105mm lens attached with the Tiffen ND variable filter. All natural lighting too. After filming, I ingested the media on my MacBook Pro 15” Retina and transcoded the video files to ProRes 422 because it’s simply easier to work with. My NLE of choice was Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 because I knew I would be sending certain clips to After Effects via dynamic link. After I locked down the first assembly, I recorded the voice overs using my wife’s voice in my closet. That’s right, my closet. I don’t have a professional recording studio, so I set up my Rode VideoMic Pro next to some thick clothing to help absorb any sound bouncing around. I also added a pop filter in front of the mic to reduce any pops or sibilance from her voice. After recording, I put some EQ and compression on the audio file using Adobe Audition CS6, then sent it straight to Premiere Pro for my second assembly. After some tweaking and color grading, I finished the project with 24 hours of work. I really loved working on this project because it’s a reminder that people matter. Even if you can’t make a difference to the masses, making a difference to one’s life is changing the world nonetheless. People Matter. I hope you enjoy! ...............................................................................................................
