Six Months At Sea In The Merchant Marine
In this short documentary, I tried to answer some of the common questions that I usually get about shipping. The footage I took myself using fairly basic cameras that I could fit in my pocket while I was on the job as a deckhand. The story follows me on a six month journey around the world on a container ship which was on a run between New York and Singapore via the Suez Canal. This was my first time going to sea on a large ship so everything was relatively new to me, therefore please excuse the couple of shipping terms I misused (such as saying "license" when I should have said "credential"). I have been on many ships since and will continue to ship out for the foreseeable future. Thanks for watching. For Maritime Institutes: 1 Check all the approvals obtained by the institute and provided by the particular country’s shipping authority. Check – List of Institutes Approved By DG Shipping India 2. Maritime institutes which provides courses approved by foreign authority needs to be screened properly. For e.g. there are many institutes in India, which are accredited by UK maritime authority and colleges to provide the required degree and seaman documents to seafarers. Before taking admission in any of such institute, do confirm the minimum approval requirements and crosscheck them with the approval/ accrediting body by sending a query mail or contacting their office through phone. 3. Check the shipping authority eligibility requirement (physical, medical and technical) and compare it with the institution. 4. Check the management and founder members/ core institute of the college or academy. 5. If you are interested in any institute and keen to take admission, the best way of getting genuine feedback is to go to that institute for fundamental background check and talk to the current students. 6. Avoid taking admission in those institute which are new/ doubtful and do not provide any clear approval documentation. For Shipping Agents: 1 The other side of the coin (maritime institute) in the ship industry are the ship manning companies and agents. To legalize and streamline this sector, the shipping authority approve such companies and agent. For e.g. in India, a ship manning company has to be RPSL approved (i.e. they have Recruitment, Placement Services License). 2. If you are in contact with an agent for ship based job, ensure he has a genuine RPS license. 3. To safeguard his/her fraud identity, agents may say the agency approval is under renewal. Never believe it and even if you feel the agency is genuine, wait for the authority to renew the license. Check – List of Agencies With RPS Licenses 4. A genuine agency or agent will never communicate the official matter through personal emails and if they are professional enough, they will have a proper official email id and a fully-functional company website. 5. However, having a company website, a letterhead and official email id is not a guarantee of genuine agency. 6. It is worth noting that under the recently enforced Maritime Labour Convention 2006, crewmen are not meant to be charged a placement fee by Manning Agents. A fraud agent will demand money against the payment of a fee, variously called “Administration”, “Facilitation” or “Service” fees, or other such designations. Never ever pay such money. 7. With lack of jobs for entry level candidates, the students are desperate and are still willing to pay manning agents to get placed onboard for training. In such cases, never pay money in advance and understand what kind of company and ship you are going for. 8. As mentioned earlier, due to lack of openings for freshers, fraud agencies are taking advantage of the situation. These fraud agent/ agency try not to cheat one but several people. Try to get as much information as possible through social media and search engines. 9. Do not fall in trap against the claim that the agency will give in writing for providing 100% job placement when student approach them for maritime education and payment. The written statement from the company can be – Provide 100% placement to the candidate without mentioning the time frame or even the time frame is mentioned; they will also not be sure about which type of ship or company you will be placed.

Singapore World's Busiest Transshipment Port
The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) regulates and licenses port and marine services and facilities. It also manages vessel traffic in the Singapore port while ensuring safety and security. The port section contains information, guidelines and procedures on matters relating to the port and its operations. The shipping section covers information on how to register a ship under the Singapore flag,as well as manning guidelines, procedures and requirements for owners and masters of Singapore-registered ships. MPA also posts circulars and notices to update the port and shipping community. Also important to the communities are information on port, shipping and other MPA tariffs. Available for download and reference is the maritime legislation of Singapore. As an active member of the international maritime community, MPA posts updates on IMO matters. Finally, we have information for seafarers of all nationalities, whether based in Singapore or visiting from overseas. At the crossroads of seaborne trade, Singapore’s interconnectivity makes it the preferred port of call for more than 130,000 vessels totalling some 1.5 billion gross tons. Singapore’s hub port is a complex stream of activity, handling a variety of cargoes at different terminals. About 30 million containers and 500 million tonnes of cargo are handled every year and more than 30 million tonnes of bunkers lifted annually. In addition, about a million visitors cruise into Singapore every year. Technology is at the heart of Singapore’s intelligent port. Advanced technology enables MPA to oversee port and marine service providers round-the-clock, making sure that services are safe and reliable. As Singapore’s national port planner, MPA is also responsible for the safe and optimal use of sea space and waterfront land. While our port can accommodate today’s largest ships, MPA is preparing for tomorrow’s increased cargo and mega ships by deepening channels and fairways, and developing the next generation of terminals. With guidelines, procedures and systems in place, MPA ensures that the port of Singapore remains safe, secure and clean while maintaining a high level of reliability, speed and efficiency in its operations. Trailer - Working With Maritime Security Guards
As part of their anti piracy measures, many shipping companies now employ armed security guards aboard vessels that transit pirate waters. However, there are legal and safety risks associated with the use of armed guards, and it is vital to choose a Private Maritime Security Company (PMSC) that offers highly competent and professionally trained guards who have experience in protecting ships against pirate attacks. WORKING WITH MARITIME SECURITY GUARDS is intended to give shipping companies and personnel on board ship useful guidance on how to engage and work successfully with armed guards, from selecting the PMSC through to the guards' disembarkation at the end of their deployment. It is a companion programme to Videotel's PIRACY AND ARMED ROBBERY, EDITION 3, which deals with piracy prevention on board ship.

Maritime Emergency HAM radio recording
Several years ago I was tuning around the 20 meter amateur radio band and heard this lively, engaging, and impressive exchange on the maritime mobile frequency, 14.300 MHz. Vessel 'Elusive' at sea in the North Pacific was being followed by another ship. The occupants felt threatened that it might be a pirate, so they called for help on the HAM radio. Volunteer radio operators around the country worked together to communicate and relay messages with the Coast Guard in California. They also came up with some brilliant ideas to stay safe and get direct help as soon as possible. The following is a recording from my location in New Hampshire. - Hanz W1JSB

Use case : EMSA-TBV-CMEMS in support to Copernicus Maritime Surveillance Service
EMSA is in charge of the Copernicus Maritime Surveillance Service in the frame of the Copernicus Security Service. Its functions are to : - perform fisheries control (monitor fishing grounds, cages, farm and ports), - maritime safety and security (search and rescue operations, safety of navigation and ship to ship transfer) - provide support to customs (detection of suspicious vessels), marine environment monitoring (detection of illegal oil discharges) - and to enforce law when necessary. In order to achieve such goals, EMSA has developed an Integrated Maritime Service (IMS) which integrates a wide range of maritime data from various sources including CMEMS data. Various parameters such as surface temperature, wave height, ocean currents and sea level height from CMEMS ocean model including 10-day forecast are ingested into the EMSA IMS tool in order to increase its monitoring capacity. Maritime and Shipping - the UK’s world-class ambition
The UK is a leading modern maritime centre with many global businesses already based here and annually contributes around £11 billion to the economy. The Department for Transport Shipping and Ports Minister Robert Goodwill is joined by key industry figures to showcase our one-stop-shop maritime professional and business services sectors on which the global industry relies. The Maritime Growth Study demonstrates our willingness to examine the challenges we face, our commitment to listen to partners and our ambition to act. Find out more about the publication of the Maritime Growth Study at the launch of London International Shipping 2015 here: https://www.gov.uk/government/news/major-maritime-report-launched-as-london-international-shipping-week-gets-underway Video Transcript: Robert Goodwill MP A thriving maritime sector is fundamental to this government’s vision for a prosperous Britain. A vision with our maritime industries at the heart of our economy, driving growth and innovation. Michael Parker The maritime industry contributes around £11 billion a year to the UK economy, and we employ, as an industry, around a quarter of a million people in this country. Guy Platten The UK maritime sector is composed of so many different parts of the cluster. We have it all here. We’ve got the ship managers, we’ve got the ship owners, we’ve got law firms, accountancy firms, finance houses, consultancies, training providers, we’ve got a highly skilled workforce, we’ve got an adaptable economic policy, we’ve got stable democracy and a good rule of law. So it’s so many good reasons to come to the UK to set up a maritime business. Robert Mortimer The biggest challenge I think is to stay looking long term, to look ahead. To look ahead, to look at the increasing, the growth in global trade, and therefore the opportunities available for the UK to capture more of that trade, whether it’s in the port sector or shipping or services. And to invest to be prepared for that trade. Lord Mountevans What we have done recently under government leadership, a Maritime Growth Study was commissioned which I have been privileged to chair. This is the first time for some 20 years that a major review has been made of both how government is organised in this sector and also how business promotes itself. Doug Barrow And that’s an opportunity to see where we can be more competitive as a country and to contribute more to the economy, and that’s very important that we get that right. Robert Goodwill MP Sea trade will double by 2030 and the UK’s maritime and marine sectors are ready to seize the opportunities this creates.
Assisting safe ship navigation - the Marine Electronic Highway
Pentair provides environmental monitoring systems for real time monitoring of tides, surface currents, directional wave height and period, horizontal visibility, air temperature, relative humidity, barometric pressure, salinity, turbidity, wind speed gust and direction, oil spill detection and a variety of other parameters that in some way may affect the safety of ships navigating through environmentally sensitive or congested areas. All this information can be broadcast from the Pentair COASTAL series to passing ships, ferries and coast guard control centers via the AIS (Automatic Identification System) network. When combined with Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) from Xanatos Marine, fitted with radar and directional camera systems, those in charge of navigation and safety have visibility and control in situations that may have otherwise have been hazardous. This clip promotes the Xanatos TITAN Sentinel system as being delivered to British Columbia.

Ferry Cruise Ship Service from Karachi to Gwadar.
PNSC Ferry Cruise Ship Service from Karachi to Gwadar Dubai and Iran to Start Soon Recrudescing News for Karachiites PNSC Ferry Cruise Ship Service Update: PNSC Ferry Cruise Ship Service to various destinations would start soon for which we have not only involved the national flag carrier PNSC but also the stakeholders from private sector. The first ferry would be started from Port Muhammad bin Qasim to Karachi Port. In this regard, Federal Minister for Ports and Shipping Senator Mir Hasil Khan Bizenjo has handed over the very first license of ferry cruise service to PNSC Chairman Arif Ilahi. Director General Ports and Shipping Asad Rafi Chaandna was also present on the occasion. This license will make the PNSC capable of facilitating passengers across Pakistan in both domestic and international journeys through ferry ships. PNSC Ferry Cruise Ship Service will also pave the way and open new avenues in the shipping sector. The PNSC Ferry Cruise Ship Service will debut from Marina Club, DHA, to Port Qasim to facilitate the daily commuters looking to avoid the city’s traffic jams. Minister for Ports and Shipping Senator Mir Hasil Khan Bizenjo said: “It is noteworthy that the PNSC is cruising ahead with distinction having achieved the ‘AA’ ratings at the start of 2017. PNSC being a Public Sector company has displayed resilience by adopting robust measures and stringent controls and as a consequence PNSC’s business profile has gained significant strength in recent years.” Replying to various questions stated that after the successful introduction of Ferry service up to Port Muhammad bin Qasim ferry service from Karachi port to Gwadar, Ormara, Pasni, Muscat and Iranian port Chahbahar were on anvil. There would be cruise service for the Karachiites for entertainment and outings. This project is to be implemented within next one and a half year time. Inland shipping project is also under study and soon you will hear some good news about it. He further stated that to end pollution in sea crucial meetings with Sindh government and allied departments have been held. It is hoped next week this meeting will decide some good measures. PNSC Chairman Arif Elahi in his address disclosed establishing a separate dredging firm to facilitate all the national ports shipping requirements. This is very good and profitable area for the investment purposes. Pakistan Dredging would be subsidiary of PNSC providing services to not only Karachi port but also to Gwadar port and PQA and any other parties. This is also a part and parcel of the CPEC efforts. On the instructions of Prime Minister we are establishing PNSC office in Gwadar. There would be a share of Pakistani flagships too along with Chinese shipping company, the Chairman added. The proposed service would be a competitive one because of the fact that government has waived off port charges for the next 14 years for ferry services. The ferry service will cost about 40% less than average of Rs. 45,000 for a return air ticket to Dubai.

Watch Shadow Stealth Ship! SUPER FAST stealth for the US Military and Navy
Another great idea for the US military and US Navy . This fast attack stealth boat will make a difference. GHOST is a super-cavitating surface craft which is able to achieve 900 times less hull friction compared to a conventional watercraft and is developed by US Citizens for the US Navy at no cost to the US government for providing superior protection to US service personnel. The craft was built by Juliet Marine Systems. The secrecy orders on the project were removed on 11 August 2011. Before Comment , please connect your tongue to your brain (Thumbnail : Foto Ilustration) The united states navy IX-529 sea shadow stealth ship was a great idea for the us navy but was scraped in 2012. Sea Shadow (IX-529) was an experimental stealth ship built by Lockheed for the United States Navy to determine how a low radar profile might be achieved and to test high stability hull configurations which have been used in oceanographic ships. Development[edit] Sea Shadow was built in 1984 to examine the application of stealth technology on naval vessels. She was used in secret until a public debut in 1993. In addition, the ship was designed to test the use of automation to enable the reduction of crew size. The ship was created by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the U.S. Navy and Lockheed. Sea Shadow was developed at Lockheed's Redwood City, California, facility, inside the Hughes Mining Barge (HMB-1), which functioned as a floating drydock during construction and testing.[1] History[edit] Sea Shadow had a SWATH hull design. Below the water were submerged twin hulls, each with a propeller, aft stabilizer, and inboard hydrofoil. The portion of the ship above water was connected to the hulls via the two angled struts. The SWATH design helped the ship remain stable even in very rough water of up to sea state 6 (wave height of 18 feet (5.5 m) or "very rough" sea). The shape of the superstructure was sometimes compared to the casemate of the ironclad ram CSS Virginia of the American Civil War.[1] Sea Shadow was built in Redwood City, California. The T-AGOS 19-and-23-class oceanographic ships have inherited the stabilizer and canard method to help perform their stability-sensitive surveillance missions.[1] Sea Shadow had only 12 bunks aboard, one small microwave oven, a refrigerator and table. She was never intended to be mission capable and was never commissioned, although she is listed in the Naval Vessel Register. Sea Shadow was revealed to the public in 1993, and was housed at the San Diego Naval Station until September 2006, when she was relocated with the Hughes Mining Barge to the Suisun Bay Reserve Fleet in Benicia, California. Until 2006, Sea Shadow and the HMB-1 were maintained and operated by Lockheed Martin for the U. S. Navy. The vessels were available for donation to a maritime museum.[1] In 2006, the US Navy tried to sell Sea Shadow to the highest bidder;[1][2] after the initial offering met with a lack of interest, it was listed for dismantling sale on gsaauctions.gov.[3] The U.S. government mandated that the buyer not sail the ship and is required to scrap the ship.[4] The ship was finally sold in 2012.[5][6] Sea Shadow was totally dismantled in 2012 by Bay Ship.[7] The United States Navy (USN) is the naval warfare service branch of the United States Armed Forces and one of the seven uniformed services of the United States. It was estimated to be larger than the next 13 largest navies combined in terms of battle fleet tonnage in 2009.[6][7] The U.S. Navy also has the world's largest aircraft carrier fleet, with ten in service, two under construction,[8] eight more planned, and two in active reserve. The service has 317,054 personnel on active duty and 109,671 in the Navy Reserve. It operates 290 ships in active service and more than 3,700 aircraft as of September 2014.[3] The U.S. Navy traces its origins to the Continental Navy, which was established during the American Revolutionary War and was essentially disbanded as a separate entity shortly thereafter. It played a major role in the American Civil War by blockading the Confederacy and seizing control of its rivers. It played the central role in the World War II defeat of Japan. The 21st century U.S. Navy maintains a sizable global presence, deploying in such areas as East Asia, the Mediterranean, and the Middle East. It is a blue-water navy with the ability to project force onto the littoral regions of the world, engage in forward areas during peacetime, and rapidly respond to regional crises, making it an active player in U.S. foreign and defense policy.

D2.7 New marine services based on ship’s AIS data, by Charles Calkoen
New marine services based on ship’s AIS data Charles Calkoen, HERMESS BV with Peter Santbergen and Ruben van der Neut (HERMESS BV) Almost all ships nowadays are equipped with an Automatic Identification System (AIS), primarily to improve marine traffic safety. The AIS signals, when collected and analysed, can be put to a much wider use. Combined with model forecasts of wind, wave, and current conditions at sea a ship’s arrival time can be assessed more accurately, taking delays due to bad weather into account. We also show the potential of AIS data to produce surface current assessments, as a valuable addition to the scarce traditional sources.
