Top 3 Best Fish vs. Worst Fish to Eat: Thomas DeLauer
Learn the 3 Safest fish to eat! I'll teach you more at http://www.ThomasDeLauer.com We are going to go over the top 3 fish to eat and the fish that you may want to avoid. Fish can become contaminated in a number of ways - size, species, age and location determine contamination levels. Heavy Metals: Mercury and Lead- Mercury is known to cause many health problems and is especially dangerous for children and women who are or may become pregnant. It can take 12-18 months for mercury to pass through the body, so women who may become pregnant should also work hard to avoid mercury. The nervous system and kidneys are the main targets of mercury. Children exposed to mercury may cause mental development problems, including coordination and learning handicaps. Anyone can experience mercury health effects, including: fatigue, dizziness, numbness or tingling, memory and coordination problems, irritability. If enough mercury is consumed, permanent brain and kidney damage can occur. Large, older, or predatory fish have more time and eat more contaminated foods, allowing heavy metals to bioaccumulate. Industrial Chemicals- PCBs, dioxins, DDT and other chemicals can leach from factories or garbage into our waters. These chemicals are related to cancer risk. Bottom dwelling fish are the most susceptible to these toxins, including the American eel, sea trout and wild striped bass. Radiation- The Fukushima nuclear disaster is one of the most widely discussed radiation events that has an impact on what we eat. Radiation is known to cause cancer, so avoiding foods high in radioactive compounds is important. Researching your fish choices online is the best way to avoid consuming fish that come from an area high in radiation. Choosing Fish for Your Family- The Environmental Defense Fund Seafood Selector is a great benefit when deciding what fish to avoid and what fish to load up on. Given the above concerns while also weighing in health and deliciousness, here is the list of the top three fish: (1) Pacific Sardines (US and Canada): -Low in mercury -Sustainably fished -High in omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins B12, B2, B3, D, selenium, phosphorus, calcium, copper and more -They are inexpensive and easy to find canned. (2) Wild Alaskan Salmon: -Salmon is one of the most delicious fish, rich in healthy fats. -Low in mercury and sustainably fished -Contains bioactive peptides that may support for cartilage, insulin and inflammation. -High in vitamins B12, B3, D, selenium, omega-3 fatty acids, phosphorus, B6 and many others. (3) Muscles: -Low in mercury and one of the most sustainably fished seafood sources out there -High in selenium, omega-3s, B12, iron, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus and many others. Seafood to Avoid: Due to toxins and sustainability, it is best to stay away from these types of seafood. (1) Shark: -Anything this high up on the food chain is going to be a red flag when it comes to toxins.Predators consume other fish and their toxins. The higher up on the food chain, the higher the levels of mercury and toxins in the fish. Adding to the health dangers is the unsustainable fishing practices. Sharks have long gestation periods, taking a long time to mature and have offspring. This makes overfishing or depleting their numbers easy to do. Most shark species are experiencing a large decline due to fishing, being caught as bycatch and for fins in Asia. (2) Tuna: A favorite among many sushi goers is unfortunately very high in mercury and horrible for sustainability. Some tuna is much better for you and the environment than others. If you do consume tuna, US yellowfin is the best option. Canned albacore tuna is high in mercury and should be avoided. Bluefin and imported albacore are the worst tuna options for health and sustainability - do your best to avoid these. Canned light tuna is better for you than canned white tuna when it comes to mercury, with about ⅓ the mercury content of canned white tuna. (3) Farmed Tilapia: Farmed tilapia in the US is often imported from China and Taiwan where the conditions and chemicals used are very troublesome. (4) Swordfish: All swordfish, being large hunters, are high in mercury. They are also fished very unsustainably, with large bycatch of sea turtles, sharks and seabirds. References 1. 9 Kinds of Fish You Should Never Eat
Can eating fish be dangerous? Fish is both delicious and healthy, but there are certain fish that will do you more harm than good for your health. Here are 9 types of fish you should never eat or eat very rarely. Some kinds of fish aren’t recommended for kids at all! Watch till the end to know how to choose fresh fish! To accelerate their growth, many fish farmers feed them hormones. - Mackerel contains mercury which is not cleared from but accumulated in the human body, causing various diseases. - There aren’t many healthy fatty acids in tilapia, yet the concentrations of harmful fats in it are almost as high as in lard. Excess consumption of this fish leads to an increase in cholesterol levels and makes the body more sensitive to allergens. - Eels have lots of fat, and thus easily absorb industrial and farm waste in the water. American species have the highest level of such intoxication. - Most of the pangasius we see in our stores is brought from Vietnam, namely from the Mekong River that is considered one of the most contaminated water bodies in the world. - Tilefish is the leader in mercury contamination, and it’s often caught in breach of the rules, increasing the risk of food poisoning. - Sea bass contains an ample amount of mercury. Sometimes, especially when it’s served as fillet, instead of sea bass, you get pangasius or some other cheaper fish. - Dollarfish, more commonly known as oilfish, contains gempylotoxin — a waxy substance that is not metabolized at all. - Tuna contains lots of mercury, especially blackfin and bluefin tuna. Additionally, there’s precious little free-grown tuna in the stores because it’s nearly extinct. - Fresh fish always has shiny scales and clear eyes. Take a fish in your hands and look — a spoiled fish will have its tail lowered weakly. - When buying live fish from a tank, make sure the water is clear. Choose fish that aren’t near the surface but closer to the bottom. - When buying salmon, choose chunks with white threads in them. If a chunk is completely red, it’s probably been dyed. Fish With Human Teeth
Some fish have human teeth? Well, not actual human teeth on fish, but fish with teeth that look like humans? Confused? Watch the video SUBSCRIBE for the latest videos: https://goo.gl/7xzjzR Don't forget to CHECK OUT our latest upload: https://goo.gl/LUB8Xw TEEEETH! That’s what the video is about. In this episode we’re looking at the strangest teeth found in sea creatures. 12. Gob Faced Squid There’s a certain squid, that we’ve talked about in a previous video, that looks like he has human teeth!! It’s the gob faced squid or for the scientists out there, the Promachoteuthis sulcus. But how about those teeth? Sorry to dissapoint you, but those aren’t real teeth. They are actually folded skin, or lips if you want to call them that way. We can’t see it in this picture, but behind the lips is the squid’s beak. 11. Sawfish What about their teeth? Well, their snout is made of cartillage and it is an extension of their skull and is lined with teeth, like a chainsaw. Their teeth are not actual teeth, they are actually fish scaled evolved to look like teeth. They continue to grow during the sawfish’s life and they don’t fall off and get replaced, like a shark’s teeth do, for example. 10.Goliath Tiger Fish Okay, now we’re gettting at some real teeth and with the Goliath Tiger Fish. It can grow up to 5 feet and weight over 100 lbs. Normally it feeds on fish that he ambushes in the rapids, using his superior strenght and those massive teeth. 9.Cookiecutter Shark The cookiecutter shark name refers to it’s feeding habits. Using his sharp teeth and gaping jaw he bites larger animals, leaving round gouging holes, as if cut with a cookie cutter shape. 8. Fangtooth Moray Eel The Fangtooth Moray Eel, also know as the Tiger Moray, is a species of eel, found in the warmer parts of the Eastern Atlantic Ocean, including the Mediteranean Sea. It’s massive transparent teeth. If you think these huge glass like fangs are scary, just you wait, because guess what it has inside it’s mouth? ANOTHER SET OF TEETH! 7. Hagfish Next on our list, the Hagfish, are widely considered the most disgusting animals in the ocean, if not on earth. The eel-shaped creatures use four pairs of thin sensory tentacles surrounding their mouths to find food—including carcasses of much larger animals. Once they find their meal, they bury into it face-first to bore a tunnel deep into its flesh. 6. Sea Lamprey Next on our list we have the Sea Lamprey. This freakish-looking creature uses a similar tactic to the cookiecutter shark, but rather than a row of teeth, the lamprey has no jaw at all. Its mouth is one big suction cup, barbed on the inside with vicious teeth that it uses to bore into the flesh of other fish, either eating them down to the bones or simply sucking their blood, depending on the species. 5.Eastern Beaded Chiton Chitons, also known as sea cradles, are marine mollusks, small, rather flat and oval in shape, with a hard shell. On number 5 on our list is this one, the Eastern Beaded Chiton. Doesn’t look very impressive, I know, but wait until you see what’s underneath. The Eastern Beaded Chiton uses its hard teeth, or radula, which look like black bulbs with bluish highlights, to chew and grind up rock in order to feed on algae and other organic material. 4.Narwhal We’re getting closer to the top and we are looking at narwhals, the unicorns of the sea. They are social animals and are typically found in pods throughout the waters of the Arctic Ocean. It’s most impressive and unique feature, the horn is actually a tooth. Male narwhals have an enlarged, spiraled canine tooth, which can grow up to 10 feet. 3.Leatherback Turtle At number 3 we have some horrifying teeth. What creatures can this be? A shark or some weird deep sea fish? No…. It’s actually a leatherback turtle. It is one of the largest living turtle and can reach over 7 ft in length. Unlike other sea turtles, the leatherback turtle lacks a bony shell and gets its name from the thick, leathery skin that instead covers its carapace. It mostly feeds on jellyfish and other soft prey. 2.Frilled Shark Number 2 on our list is something that looks like it came out of a horror movie. Little is known about the frilled shark, fossil records suggest it belongs to a group of sharks that has been around for at least 95 million years! Because it usually lives at depth it is very rarely seen alive. 1. Pacu Number one on our list is the Pacu, an omnivorous fish found in South America related to the piranha, most famous for it’s human-like teeth. When you first see a photo of the Pacu, you immediately think Photoshop! But no, they are real, but not so dangerous.

Why Bluefin Tuna Is So Expensive | So Expensive
A tuna once sold for $1.8 million, but you can get cans of tuna fish for less than $2 at the grocery store. So, what's the difference? Bluefin tuna can be very expensive depending on where you buy it and which part of the fish you are eating. We spoke with the chef at Shoji in New York, Derek Wilcox, to find out why the fish is so expensive. ------------------------------------------------------ #BluefinTuna #Fish #BusinessInsider Business Insider tells you all you need to know about business, finance, tech, retail, and more. Fisherwoman catches world record 411.6kg TUNA worth $2m or 1769 tins after 4hr battle - New Zealand
It could be worth up to $ 2million, make 2,875 sandwiches, and has been hailed a 'Picasso of the sea'... but Donna Pascoe wants to stuff her record-breaking tuna catch and hang it on her wall. The game fisherwoman battled for more than four hours the 411.6kg (64 stone) Pacific bluefin before finally reeling in the high-speed leviathan - thought to be the largest ever caught with a rod and line. She hooked the fish - which is twice the size of a tuna sold at a Japanese auction last year for $1.09million - using a 60lb line near the Three Kings Islands off Cape Reinga of New Zealand. The experienced angler first suspected something fishy was going on when her line began to tug. 'The line was peeling out like it was attached to a freight train,' said Donna, of Auckland, New Zealand. 'As usual, I was pretty nervous that I might get spooled. Thankfully, the fish stopped running and I was able to get a bit of line back in.' Unaware of the scale of her catch, Donna and her four-strong team battled for over four hours to drag the gargantuan 8ft 9' tuna onto her boat. 'It was a very stubborn fish, but I'm stubborn as well,' said Donna. The wind had got up to gusts of 36 knots and I was getting drenched from the waves coming over the back of the boat. 'But I was determined to win this one. I knew we had to get the tuna on board before a shark came and bit a chunk out of it. 'We were all speculating what it was. No way did I think it was a tuna.' After the 4 hour and 11 minute long battle, the fish was lifted on to the boat, with the help of the anchor winch. She said: 'Once we got it on board, everybody's mouth dropped open. It was absolutely amazing. 'I was so excited that my arms and legs could have fallen off and I wouldn't have noticed. I think adrenalin is a great thing and it certainly kept me going.' At 411.6kg, the fish weighs twice as much as a baby elephant and could fill 3162 cans of tuna. It blows the current world record for a fish caught on a rod of 335kg out of the water. Alistair Blair, chairman of The Fish Society, the largest online fish retailer in Britain, told MailOnline: 'The wholesale value of a bluefin tuna that size would be in the realm of $8,300 (£5,000) to $16,500 (£10,000) - that's about four times the value of an ordinary tuna. The retail value, of course, would be much higher - somewhere around $83,000 (£50,000) or more.' Last year, however, a 222kg bluefin tuna sold for $1.09 million at a Tokyo auction. By that standard, Donna's fish could be worth up to $2 million at auction. 'People would be willing to pay a lot for a record-breaking fish,' added Mr Blair. 'If you have got a bit of that fish to serve at your banquet then you've got something pretty boast-worthy. 'So this would appeal only to people who are billionaires. It's the fish equivalent of buying a Picasso painting.' He added that a whole bluefin tuna contains around 55 per cent of edible meat. That means it could make 1,769 tins of tuna (160g, brine drained), 2,875 tuna sandwiches or 511 dishes of tuna sashimi. Donna, however, is unable to sell it because the fish wasn't caught on a commercial vessel. Instead, she plans to have it mounted by a taxidermist at the Houhora Big Game & Sports Fishing Club in New Zealand. Donna explained: 'We were originally going to have it smoked and shared around our friends, but then we were talked out of this as it was so monumental.' Usually a fish is either stuffed with filler material like firmly packed sawdust or it is stretched over a mold and shaped into the desired pose. Donna has chosen to make a mold, but the pose, she says, is yet to be decided. The enormous catch put Donna in first place in the tuna section for the New Zealand Sport Fishing Council Nationals Competition. She is now awaiting certification from the International Game Fish Association so she can claim the world record. Bluefin are the world's largest tuna and can live for up to 40 years. Built for speed, they can dive up to 4,000 feet and have retractable fins so they can seek out schools of herring, mackerel and eels. "Going up the Country" - Canned Heat / WOODSTOCK '69
Enjoy this GREAT SONG from Woodstock era ! PEACE&LOVE !!! Lyrics : -I'm going up the country, babe don't you wanna go -I'm going up the country, babe don't you wanna go -I'm going to some place where I've never been before -I'm going, I'm going where the water tastes like wine -Well I'm going where the water tastes like wine -We can jump in the water, stay drunk all the time -I'm gonna leave this city, got to get away -I'm gonna leave this city, got to get away -All this fussing and fighting, man, you know I sure can't stay -Now baby, pack your leaving trunk, you know we've got to leave today -Just exactly where we're going I cannot say, but -We might even leave the USA -'Cause there's a brand new game that I want to play -No use of you running, or screaming and crying -'Cause you've got a home as long as I've got mine btw I've never made this video

Sea Turtle swimming with jerry cans..
This Sea Turtle was filmed in Isla del Caño, Costa Rica. The turtle had probably been swimming with the plastic jerry cans for a long time. What resulted in necrosing of the right fin of the trutle (what you clearly see at the end of the video).

Bringing Fish Up from the Deep | Engineering Is
Fish that live in the twilight zone region of the ocean are a crucial part of a vastly under-studied ecosystem. When fish are brought up to the surface for study, the change in pressure between their native depth (200-500 feet) and sea level often causes fatal damages to their anatomy. Watch how a team of scientists from the California Academy of Sciences designs and builds a portable chamber that creates a pressure-controlled environment for these animals, so they can safely transport them from the twilight zone to the aquarium. For more about this story, go to: http://science.kqed.org/quest/video/bringing-fish-up-from-the-deep/ Transcript: - One of the most interesting parts of the ocean for me is this area that we call the Twilight Zone, which is this narrow band of the ocean between about 200 and 500 feet below the surface of the water. It's mysterious, it's unknown, it's sort of enchanting and captivating, but also it's an area where literally, the light is like twilight. - This twilight zone is part of the coral reef, but it's a part that's very understudied. About half of the fish are not known, and nobody goes down there because there's a lot of technical difficulties associated in going there. So a lot of the times, those deep reefs are being destroyed even before we identify what's down there. - It wasn't until really recent years that we've had sophisticated and reliable diving equipment that allowed people to actually go down there and come back. One of the most challenging aspects of this diving really is the pressure. The deeper you go in the ocean, the more and more pressure is stacking up, and that's essentially just all of that water that's over your head pressing down on your body. One of the first things we recognized is that the fish that we wanted to bring up from the depths were subject to the same decompression issues that humans are. - So most fish have swim bladders. It's a little chamber filled with gas that keeps them neutrally buoyant, so if they didn't have a swim bladder because the fish, their tissues, are heavier than water, it will just sink. If you capture a fish at those depths and just bring him to the surface, that swim bladder is going to inflate. The gas expands inversely to the pressure. The swim bladder expands, it pushes the stomach away, it pushes the heart, the heart stops beating, and then everything else collapses just because the swim bladder takes the space of everything. - And then there's an antheus in here somewhere. It's from Hawaii. - I had started to hear about the idea of the academy going down and exploring deep under the ocean with divers and possibly collecting fish down there, and since my job is to make sure that those fish come back healthy, I thought about different ways that we could make sure that they could handle that pressure change. Is there a way that we can seal the fish up at pressure, keep them at the pressure that they were collected at, and then bring them to the surface and slowly decompress them over a period of a few days, so that we don't have to have any of that trauma. What we wanted to do was to take the pressure chamber underwater with us. We knew that if we wanted to dive with it, it needed to be sturdy yet sleek yet light yet all these things that's sort of our design compromises. And it also needs to, of course, be able to handle the immense amount of pressure that's on it. The first sort of flash bulb over the head idea that we had was to use a water filter housing. They're used for home water filtration. It's about two gallons, it's enough space for our fish to live in that space for about 24 hours while we decompress them, and that's a cheap off the shelf unit, you can get one for about $100, but then we just heavily modified it. This is the main pressure canister, or the main pressure chamber. I mean it's basically tinkering on a grand scale. I mean I played with Legos as a kid, and this is like real adult Legos, right? Putting all these things together and seeing how they work and seeing how an idea that is brand new that nobody's ever done before, seeing how it works in the real world is great. It's a dream job. - [Bart] It's a portable, submersible, deep compression chamber. You just pull the velcro up and stick the fish in and seal the velcro. And then once we were done with the collecting, make sure that we sealed it all up tight, make sure it holds the pressure, and then we start our ascent. - [Matt] They bring it up to the boat, and then we connect it to a water supply and our pressure generating pump, and that pushes water through the canister, so that the fish start to get a water change. We keep it like that for the next 24 hours while we slowly start to bleed off that pressure until it's at surface pressure.

Canned Smoked Oysters - Are They ALL from CHINA? - WHAT ARE WE EATING??
Oysters, you either love them or hate them! Oysters the sweet, slimy, briny, filter feeding bivalve mollascs are absolutely delicious no matter how you eat them. As Pvt Benjamin Buford "Bubba" Blue would say if he was talking about oysters instead of shrimp, I like to think oysters are the jewel of the sea, you can eat em raw, fry em, grill em, roast em, broil em. Deys uh oyster stew, oyster po boy, oysters rockefeller, baked oysters, oyster pie, oyster stuffing, oysters wrapped in bacon, oyster shooters. That that about it! Well Bubba forgot about smoked oysters in a can which from what I can remember are pretty good. I haven’t had them in years, so I don’t remember the kind I used to eat and I know there’s more brands than what I have here today so I may need to do a second video on canned smoked oysters as I find more. These are cheap smoked oysters are the ones carried by my local grocery store, walmart and dollar tree. All were under $2 a can. I shop at these stores to find food that is generally highly processed, full of fillers and simply bad for us to eat regularly! Meat, vegetables, canned food, frozen food, refrigerated food, boxed food, vegan food, vegetarian food and all sorts of prepared foods, if it's cheap and questionable I will do a taste test and food review on it! I also show you these foods are no bargain like these discount stores and manufacturers lead you to believe. I do this to show you that fresh foods are not only healthier, but they're also cheaper than these so called bargain foods. So far I haven't gotten sick, but some of these foods are certainly questionable and have come close to making me sick.

9 TRAGIC Truths About Ocean Pollution!
With sea creatures dwindling at an alarming rate, many fish populations as well as our valuable reefs are on the brink of extinction. Here are 9 tragic truths about ocean pollution we can’t continue to ignore. SUBSCRIBE for the latest videos: https://goo.gl/7xzjzR Don't forget to CHECK OUT our latest upload: https://goo.gl/LUB8Xw Rubbish Cigarette butts, old worn fishing gear, tin and plastic containers from food and beverages, paper bags and one-time use products such as bottles, carrier bags, straws and utensils, are posing a huge threat to our planet, and our oceans in particular. According to the National Academy of Sciences, an estimated eight million tons of rubbish enter the world’s oceans every year. Land-based Pollution The release of minerals and toxic nutrients drain directly into our oceans which lend a reduction in oxygen levels, as well as a detriment to the quality of clean water and decaying of plant resources. Millions of motor engines release oil emissions and residue that fall onto our roads and parking lots; further, water pollution can even start off in the air. Dirt is a well-known pollutant that clogs up our waterways and settles in our oceans. Top soil and silt from fields and construction projects run into the ocean and severely threaten wildlife habitats as well. The dumping of toxic chemicals into the sea results in thermal pollution in which water temperatures rise. Ocean-based Pollution Twenty percent of marine pollution comes from ocean-based sources, such as those stemming from fishing, shipping, and cruise-ship industries. Another serious cause is contamination from efforts such as gold, copper, cobalt, and zinc mining. When the production of sulfide deposits as far as three thousand miles deep begin to infiltrate the water, the subsequent areas affected are ecosystems that survive at the lowest regions of our oceans. The growing toxicity from oil leaks, corrosion, and oil spills to these regions results in permanent damage to the marine habitats found there. Rubbish & The Repercussions According to a recent study conducted by the University of Georgia, enough waste ends up in our oceans every year to line every coast on the planet with five bulging bags of trash. If we continue the careless dance of disposing of our garbage by improper means, man-made items such as plastic bottles, aluminum cans, clothing, and other nonbiodegradable packaging products can reach the sea and get washed back ashore. Underwater Canyons According to a survey off the sunny coast of Monterey Bay, California, a discovery was made regarding the astonishing amount of litter lodged in the deeper parts of the canyon there. The Monterey Canyon is a famous underwater trench spanning ninety-five miles, and due to its depth of 11,800 feet, the canyon hosts many unique underwater organisms that make Monterey Bay an important ecological area. Home to the largest national marine sanctuary in the United States, Monterey Bay and its canyon play a dynamic role in aquatic health and biodiversity. The Imperfections of Plastic Scientists have determined that around the end of 2017, there was a 1:2 ratio of plastic to plankton permeating our waters. The number of plastics alone was estimated at around 150 million tons— approximately one fifth of the weight of all fish inhabiting our oceans! The study further concludes that if this problem isn’t solved soon, plastic will well outnumber fish by the year 2050. A Great Patch of Floating Trash There’s a patch of marine litter in the Pacific Ocean with many names: called the North Pacific Gyre by some, the Pacific Trash Vortex by others, and most commonly— the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. The largest oceanic site for ocean plastic in the world, this titanic titan of trash sifts in the middle of the ocean between Hawaii and California. The GPGP is the biggest of five other plastic accumulation points located among our planet’s oceans. You Are what You Eat Due to the notion that seventy percent of our earth’s surface is covered in water, the general consensus is that pollutants will imminently dilute and then disappear. This may be the case if it weren’t for the 228.450 known species in the ocean (and another two million remaining a complete mystery), which must eat on a daily basis. Destruction & Extinction Each year, 100,000 sea mammals and organisms die from ocean pollution alone. More than 1/3 of shellfish populations growing in waters around the United States are subsequently harmed by coastal pollution. Our illustrious coral reefs are turning white and diminishing by the second, a direct cause of abandonment from algae, as algae are forced to seek alternative shelter unaffected by sunlight and thermal temperatures. Every year 300,000 dolphins and porpoises are killed by becoming entangled in fishing nets and other hazardous flotsam.

Sainsbury's sustainable seafood
Out of eight supermarkets surveyed in 2009, the Marine Conservation Society ranks Sainsbury at No. 2 of the sustainable seafood retailer (No. 1 is Co-op and No. 8 is Asda) survey 2009. You can see here why Sainsbury scored so well (though it could still do better, Sainsbury's still sell plenty of unsustainably fished tuna, both canned and "fresh"). These cans of fish represent some of the most ocean friendly sea food on sale given most seafood is sold too cheap with little thought for the damage they inflict on the ocean and viable fishing in the future. Not just "dolphin friendly", often a greenwash label but MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) certified, pole and line caught or sourced from well controlled fisheries in Alaska. Rendered to "Spring" (Fruhling) from Strauss' four last songs sung by Elisabeth Schwarzkop, 1954.

What Is Marine Debris? | A Cartoon Crash Course
Marine debris is all the manmade stuff that ends up in the oceans—from soda cans and plastic bottles to sunken ships. There’s marine debris in every ocean on Earth, and all that junk can kill and injure sea life, impede navigation, leach chemicals, and even end up in our food. Nationally syndicated cartoonist Jim Toomey, creator of Sherman's Lagoon, has joined forces with The Pew Charitable Trusts to illustrate "marine debris" and other terms associated with our oceans. Watch the full ocean terms video series: http://www.pewtrusts.org/en/research-and-analysis/collections/2016/01/cartoon-crash-course-a-visual-glossary-of-ocean-terminology *TRANSCRIPT* You know that feeling of having too much stuff – gadgets, loose socks, maybe a couple of abandoned fishing vessels? Now imagine that multiplied by, oh, one trillion, and you start to understand how the ocean must feel about marine debris. Marine debris is all the manmade stuff that ends up in the ocean, from soda cans, plastic bottles and the sun hat you lost last summer--to abandoned fishing gear, entire vessels that are sunken or marooned. Whether it got there on purpose or by accident, and even if that hat happens to fit a certain octopus just perfectly, it still qualifies as marine debris. Scientists say there are 5 and a quarter trillion pieces of plastic alone in the ocean, and that’s only part of the marine debris problem. All that junk is killing and injuring sea life, impeding navigation, leaching chemicals, and even ending up in our food. Plastics, for example, break down into tiny particles that resemble fish eggs. Fish consume those particles, we eat the fish and, well, you know. Marine debris is present in every ocean, carried far and wide by currents and wind. People – and probably some fish – are working on ways to clean all this stuff up but, as yet, nobody has found a solution… or your hat, for that matter. Pewtrusts.org/cartooncrashcourse
