We deeply love and respect sea life and its natural cycles. Under normal circumstance we would never touch a sea turtle but this was anything but normal for the turtle. We came across this Green Sea Turtle at the bottom of the ocean while snorkeling. She was lethargic and barley moving. Upon closer look, it was noticeable that she was not moving her front flippers. She hovered near us for 30 minutes. We thought she was dying.... and she was. This beautiful Honu had become entangled in a fishing line that was wrapped tightly, multiple times around her neck and both of her front flippers making it impossible for her to move them or inhale a full breath of air. If she moved her front flippers, the fishing line would act as a noose, further tightening around her neck. She was in a life or death situation. Due to the extenuating circumstances and understanding that minutes would mean life or death for this precious Honu, human instinct to save the life of another in need, set in. We do not recommend or condone handling an endangered sea turtle. But in this unique set of circumstances, it felt like the right and only choice. She was brought closer to shore, where we were able to untangle her promptly, gently and release her safely back into the sea. Each time we cut one layer that was strangling her, she would reach her head above the water and take a huge gasp of air and look at us. When her flippers were free, she immediately began moving them with a felt sense of relief. It is illegal to kill, capture or harass sea turtles. All six species of sea turtles in the US are protected under the Endangered Species Act of 1973. Royalty Free Music: "The Lonely Smurfer" by Johnny Hawaii (http://johnnyhawaii.bandcamp.com/)"

This is the original video! Filmed by Christine Figgener, marine biologist at Texas A&M University. ***WARNING: Graphic Content & Inappropiate/ Strong Language!*** This video shows graphically why plastic waste is detrimental to marine life, especially single-use plastics (such as straws, which are one of the most redundant items). This turtle suffers from an item that is human-made and used by most of us frequently. The research team around Christine Figgener (Texas A&M University) found a male Olive Ridley sea turtle during an in-water research trip in Costa Rica. He had a 10-12 cm PLASTIC STRAW lodged in his nostril and they removed it. SAY "NO" TO PLASTIC STRAWS, AND ANY KIND OF ONE-TIME USE PLASTIC ITEMS! If you would like to support our research and conservation efforts in Costa Rica, please think about donating to our GoFundMe Campaign http://gofundme.com/wuhvd6zj UPDATES The Plastic Pollution Coalition just launched their "No Straw" Campaign in collaboration with us. Take the No-Straw-Pledge and learn more: http://www.plasticpollutioncoalition.... ----- The Story behind the viral video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nLN52... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4MPHb... OUR STORY: My research team found a male Olive Ridley sea turtle during an in-water research trip in Costa Rica. He had a 10-12 cm PLASTIC STRAW lodged in his nostril. After initially thinking that we are looking at a parasitic worm, and trying to remove it to identify it, we cut a small piece off to investigate further and finally identified what we were REALLY looking at. After a short debate about what we should do we removed it with the plier of a swiss army knife which was the only tool available on our small boat (not intended for overnight stays), since we were on the ocean, in a developing country, a few hours away from the coast and several hours away from any vet (probably days from any vet specialised in reptiles, not to mention sea turtles) and x-ray machines. Plus, we would have incurred a penalty (up to time in jail) on ourselves by removing the turtle since that is beyond our research permits. He did very obviously not enjoy the procedure very much, but we hope that he is now able to breath more freely. The blood from the shoulder is from a 6mm skin biopsy we took previously to this event for a genetic study (part of our permitted research), which usually doesn't bleed much, but which started bleeding while restraining the turtle. We disinfected the air passageway with iodine and kept the turtle for observation before releasing him back into the wild. The bleeding stopped pretty much immediately after the removal of the straw, and when we released him, he swam happily away. The turtle very likely swallowed the straw while ingesting other food items and then either expelled the straw together with the redundant sea water through her nostrils, or regurgitated the straw and it ended up in the wrong passageway. The nasal cavity of sea turtles is connected directly to the palate (roof of the mouth) by a long nasopharyngeal duct. This video shows the detrimental effects of so-called ghost nets on marine animals. ***Warning: GRAPHIC CONTENT*** Video Credit and Copyright: Christine Figgener *** This footage is managed exclusively by Viralvideouk.com. If you wish to license this footage please contact [email protected] For more viral videos check here https://www.youtube.com/user/viralvideouk1 ** ----- Almost to the day exactly one year ago my research team found a plastic drinking straw embedded in a male olive ridley sea turtle's nostril (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4wH878t78bw). We removed it and hopefully eased his suffering and improved his quality of life. This past 9th of August 2016, my research team once again encountered a sea turtle in distress. We found an exhausted olive ridley female swimming close to our research boat and she was dragging a huge bulk of discarded fishing net behind her. Parts of it were wrapped around her throat and had already started to cut into her flesh. We took her onboard our boat, cut-off the net, and disinfected her cuts with iodine. Due to the knowledge of the scarcity of sea turtle rehab facilities and lack of expert care for injured sea turtles in Costa Rica, we released the female back into the water since she seemed otherwise healthy and strong. As biologists, we don't actively seek out injured wildlife, but our research happens to position us at the front-lines of reality looking at the detrimental effects of human impact on wildlife. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Our research is approved by the US IACUC and is conducted under research permits issued by the Costa Rican government, MINAE/SINAC and CONAGEBio. These nets, often nearly invisible in the dim light, can be left tangled on a rocky reef or drifting in the open sea. They can entangle fish, dolphins, sea turtles, sharks, dugongs, crocodiles, seabirds, crabs, and other creatures, including the occasional human diver. Acting as designed, the nets restrict movement, causing starvation, laceration and infection, and suffocation in those that need to return to the surface to breathe. The Vancouver Aquarium's veterinarian, Dr. Martin Haulena, aims his gun at a California sea lion. But instead of bullets, it's loaded with tranquilizer darts. Dr. Haulena, along with the Aquarium's veterinary team and marine mammal consulting biologist Wendy Szaniszlo, spent a day on the west coast of Vancouver Island (Barkley-Clayoquot region) in October 2013, looking for entangled sea lions. On this day, they saw nine entangled sea lions. They were able to disentangle two California sea lions after safely sedating them and cutting the plastic fish-packing straps they had around their necks. This mission was done in partnership with Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Parks Canada, Brian Gisborne of Juan de Fuca Express and the Canadian Wildlife Federation. In 2011, the Aquarium rescued "Flash," a California sea lion that had ingested four feet of fishing equipment. After his rehabilitation at the Aquarium's Marine Mammal Rescue Centre, Flash was successfully released back to his home waters. The Rescue Centre is currently caring for a rescued sea otter suffering from gunshot wounds. Learn more about the Rescue Centre: vanaqua.org/mmr

At the Smithsonian’s National Zoo, a massive exhibit made entirely of 315 pounds of plastic pollution fished from the Pacific is on display. Called "Washed Ashore: Art to Save the Sea," it features 17 sculptures, from jellyfish to shark. The lesson? The ocean's deadliest predator is trash. In our NewsHour Shares moment of the day, Julia Griffin pays the plastic sea creatures a visit.

Sea Shepherd crew rescued a whale entangled in an illegal totoaba gillnet in the Gulf of California. Sea Shepherd currently has two vessels in Mexico's Gulf of California on OPERATION MILAGRO. Our goal is to save the vaquita porpoises, the most endangered marine mammal. The vaquita are caught as a result of fishing the totoaba, a fish poached for its swim bladder. Both the vaquita and the totoaba are endangered species and protected by law. Both species live only in the Gulf of California. read more at: https://seashepherd.org/news/sea-shepherd-crew-save-humpback-whale-entangled-in-illegal-gillnet/

Most of us adore beach resorts and go to one of the large saltwater bodies at least once a year. However, we shouldn’t forget that the sea is as attractive as it is wayward. We at Bright Side wondered how a person who happened to be in the open sea should behave. It turns out there are several rules that aren’t at all difficult to remember. Despair is your most dangerous enemy. Don’t give up hope of being saved. There are many stories of people who were found in the open sea months after their disappearance. For instance, 25-year-old sailor Poon Lim, who worked on a British merchant ship, survived alone 133 days in the open sea. After a shipwreck, he managed to find a raft with fresh water, cookies, flares, and a flashlight. Every day, Lim ate only 2 cookies and made 3 sips of water. To avoid muscle atrophy, he even floated around the raft twice a day. As you can see, human possibilities are endless. The main thing is to keep calm and hope for the best. TIMESTAMPS Calm down 0:35 Choose the right swimming style 0:57 Find something that floats 1:37 Take care of clothes 1:55 Decide what you’ll eat 2:16 Provide yourself with liquid 3:01 Save yourself properly 4:02 Don’t lose hope 5:06 SUMMARY: - Panic definitely won’t help you. It can cloud your judgment and make you lose the rhythm of breathing. Therefore, the first thing you should do is to calm down. - The style of swimming you choose determines how long your strength will last. In calm water, it’s better to swim on your back. If waves splash around you, it’s better to swim on your belly. - If you’re in the open sea as a result of a shipwreck or an airplane water landing, there must be plenty of things around you that perfectly keep afloat. It will be even better if it’s a boat or a raft with which ships are equipped. - Remember that open sunlight can be extremely dangerous. So don’t remove your clothes — they’ll protect you from the sun. - If you have rations, divide them into small daily portions. This will make them last for a long time, and you won’t have problems with digestion. - Try to fish even if you have stores of food. After all, fish contain some liquid. - You have to consume the liquid constantly but never drink seawater. - Try to ensure that you always have a couple of empty containers left for collecting rainwater. According to studies, drinking untreated rainwater is safe for your health. - • If you found fluorescein, dissolve it in the water when you see an airplane or ship. It forms a bright spot around you which can be easily seen from the air and from afar. Fishing gear designed to capture some of our favorite fish is threatening sea turtle survival. In June 2015, Lauren Conrad and Oceana traveled to the Rancho Nuevo Sea Turtle Sanctuary in Mexico where the world's most endangered species, Kemp's Ridley sea turtles, come to nest on its beaches. With help from the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (CONANP), Conrad and Oceana patrolled the beaches and released hatchlings into the Gulf of Mexico where their life begins. Conrad has joined Oceana's campaign to urge the U.S. government to take action and protect endangered sea turtles in the southeast shrimp trawl fishery. Jason Kunewa was out on a boat when he noticed a leatherback sea turtle tangled in sea kelp. It was wrapped around it's left fin and neck. He didn't think twice, grabbed his GoPro, a knife and jumped into the ocean to save the 700-pound turtle. But saving the turtle had an extra special meaning for him. His aunt and grandmother in Hawaii often save sea turtles which are considered sacred animals to their family. Kunewa even has a tattoo on his arm of a sea turtle which is his family's symbol.

In 1980, aerial footage of the Dead Sea in Israel showed a coastline with not one single sinkhole. Today, that same coastline contains more than 6,000. And while there are sinkholes in other parts of the world, nowhere do they spread as quickly as along the Dead Sea. As the sea’s water levels continue to drop, the phenomenon accelerates. And despite the pressure to do nothing, geologist Eli Raz set out to reverse this trend and save an ecosystem under dire threat. Every year, millions of marine mammals die, because of what we put into the oceans. When you pick up a piece of plastic off the beach, you could be saving a whale. Why not save a life every time? One of my finer video if I do say so myself. :D Disclaimer: Florence and the Machine- No Light Videos used :DisneyNature Ocean http://www.takepart.com/oceans/plastic-pollution I do not own any of the videos or music used in this video.

Sea Otters have been hunted since the 18th century for their fur. There was once 300 000 of them. Now there are only 2 000. Hunting has been banned, but they are still on the endangered species list. Help people become more aware of what is happening. Save the Otters.
