The role of a product manager is crucial but also one of the least understood ones. What does a product manager really do? Is he more of a data analyst? Or someone who deals with the tech aspects of product, leading the team of engineers? Or does the product manager largely concern himself/herself with user experience, design or the overall business strategy? Mind-boggling isn't it? No wonder the role is difficult to understand for most. In this video, Ravijot Chugh, Co-Founder and Product Head at UpGrad, explains in detail the various responsibilities a Product Manager has, and that you need to execute to the best of your ability to be a good PM. If you want to bag one among the thousands of highly coveted openings for Product Managers between now and 2020 (only to grow exponentially even after), you need to start upgrading your existing skills and mastering these key skills. Product Managers are often referred to as mini-CEOs of the product. This is why, at tech companies, startups and large MNCs that are now diversifying, alike, the role of Product Managers is lucrative and one of the most important in the organization. WHY SHOULD I HIRE YOU is often the last question you will be asked in an interview. Prepare for it. This is your chance to restate the skills you possess that are most relevant to the position and to summarize your other qualities that make you the perfect person for the job, and that's why they should hire you. Outline your answer before you go in, so that you can answer clearly, concisely, and with confidence. Your answer should be short and to the point. It should reflect your professional background as it relates to current needs and problems of the position. Review the job description and tell how you are the right person for the job by matching up your skill set with each bullet point of the job description. In formulating your answer as to why they should hire you, be sure to address these areas: 1. Determine their goals for the position. This should come up during your research into the company and the position. If possible, talk to others who work for the company. If you are unclear on this point, include it in the questions you ask at the interview and be prepared to incorporate it into your answer. 2. Show you have the skills needed for the job. Based on the goals you have identified in step one, determine how your skills and experience support those goals. If necessary, refer back to your list of skills. Last week on Build (https://youtu.be/Z9Iprf97AkE), we shared why it instead of rebuilding or redesigning an existing product, it might make sense to build a brand new product, and we walked you through how some folks on the Pivotal Tracker team arrived at their decision. When you start building a new product, you have the best of intentions to revise old processes and move away from bad habits. But it’s easier said than done. So this week we’re going to share some best practices for keeping a new product on track! And to help us out Lisa Doan and Vera Reynolds are back! You’ll recall Lisa is a product manager at Pivotal Tracker, and Vera is a software engineer at Pivotal Tracker. As you watch today’s episode you’ll learn the following: - Why it’s important to set a mission and vision for a product and what happens when you don’t - What being user-centric looks like in practice - How to create a balanced team and have members weight in on decisions during planning meetings - How to hold yourself and your team accountable inside a larger organization - How to remind people of best practices -- Build is produced as a partnership between Femgineer ((http://femgineer.com/) and Pivotal Tracker (http://www.pivotaltracker.com/). Wills is the production manager at Shakespeare's Globe theatre. Scenery is more important now than 400 years ago, he explains. Through Wills work we enter Shakespeare's world. Wills is one out of five Londoners in the Shakespeare In London season, as part of Shakespeare400. 1000 LONDONERS This film is part of 1000 Londoners, a five-year digital project which aims to create a digital portrait of a city through 1000 of the people who identify themselves with it. The profile contains a 3 minute film that gives an insight into the life of the Londoner, as well as their personal photos of London and some answers to crucial questions about their views on London life. Over the course of the project we aim to reveal as many facets of the capital as possible, seeing city life from 1000 points of view. www.1000londoners.com www.youtube.com/1000londoners www.facebook.com/1000londoners Twitter: @1000_londoners 1000 Londoners is produced by South London based film production company and social enterprise, Chocolate Films. The filmmakers from Chocolate Films will be both producing the films and providing opportunities to young people and community groups to make their own short documentaries, which will contribute to the 1000 films. Visit www.chocolatefilms.com TRANSCRIPT I'm the production manager at the Globe. Part of that job is to sort of design how all the scenery and that stuff goes together. And when the designer and the director come to me in early stages before rehearsal starts. With al little computer model of what they want. Our first thing to do is to try and work out how to make that twenty-five bigger. And do it in a way that we can turn it around every day. And do it so that it is safe and it doesn't fall down on people when they're rehearsing or playing. We use designers a bit more than I feel they would have done 400 years ago. I think they would have just turned up with a text and some costumes and a couple of goblets and some swords. And done the shows. Do you know what I mean? I don't think they would have built a load of truss and smoke machines and huge fans and lighting and stuff like that. I don't get stressed in the lead up to it. But more often if you're watching the first few performances, and there's a particularly technical moment. If you've got an actor flying in through the trap door for example, on a winch. It's kind of out of your hands by then a little bit by then. Then I do spend a lot of time with my fingers crossed. So, we have just taken down this morning a production of Imogen. Which is in technical rehearsals. And this afternoon there's a matinee performance of Macbeth. And that's what's going on right now. It's great working here. It's a beautiful place to work. There's something about being next to the river. And there's something about the architecture of that building. I've worked in many theatres and a lot of the time you get locked up in the dark. And here it's… Well as you can see today, it's a nice day so we get a bit of sunshine and fresh air. And I think that keeps people in a good mood. I do feel like the building and the people that I work with as well are more important than the literature. I do feel more connected to the building. Because it's nature you know. The fact that it's got a thatched roof and it's all timber. It's much easier to relate to I think as a piece of architecture. I mean it feels a bit more, I wanna say organic but that sounds rubbish, but I kinda mean it's closer to us. Because it's hand made materials and stuff like that. It's tangible. And it feels much more personal than it would if I was putting a Rawlplug in a piece of concrete. My kids do think it's the coolest job ever. Whenever I bring them here I can't drag them away. They are sort of in tears when I try to get them out of the building. 'Cause they think that I'm famous because I work at the Globe. So, whenever they come here they're straight on the stage. Doing cartwheels and stuff like that.

In this video, I’m going to try my best to answer a question that I get asked a lot: “When should you stop a failing store?”. Since my strategy is to take a proven product, create a one-product store for it, and essentially force it to work through extensive testing, a lot of people wonder at which point they should give up on a store that isn’t profitable. I start by explaining my minimal testing framework, which is the minimum amount of testing I will typically do for one product. This includes testing different creatives, lookalike audiences, & single interests. Then, I explain how you can see if a campaign has potential at first glance, and what you should do to troubleshoot a campaign that clearly isn't working. I also explain how you can optimize your campaigns & save budget by quickly pausing bad adsets, using your breakeven CPP or CPATC as a pass-fail criterion. Lastly, I explain how you can go from breaking even on a store to being profitable through compounding improvements in your funnel. This is extremely powerful and has the potential to turn a failing store upside down. At the end of the video, I mention my new case study based course that launched about a week ago... Since launching, seeing the student results inside the private group has been nothing short of amazing. If you've already seen my free content and you understand my strategy, I truly believe that seeing this case study will make everything click. Product Management Course - Day 16 of 20 Any product needs to fulfill 3 criteria to be successful. It has to alleviate customer pain and enhance experience - Be Desirable. It has to empower stakeholders with the confidence to forge ahead - Be Feasible. It has to deliver win-win outcomes without draining resources - Be Viable Balancing such a complex dynamic is only possible with extraordinary talent who are conscious, nimble and adaptive. Any Product team member is busy with their things. Product Roadmaps, Customer Interviews, Technology Architecture, Prototypes, Coding, Copywriting and Launching are created and propagated. None of it is yielding expected results. Momentum is lost. Acrimony is amplified. Collaboration Breaks Down and Customer is Left in the Lurch. Product teams fail to execute when there is imbalance in team composition. Ignore hiring of smart A+ players at your own peril. organizations with weak talent get busted sooner or later. The real challenge is that problem with a dysfunctional team isn’t obvious. “Everyone’s fault. No one’s fault.” A sense of accountability is the driving force for high performance teams. This is basically a 1 day product ownership course compressed into 15 minute animated presentation. There's obviously more to product ownership than this, so see this is a high level summary. For translated versions & translation guide, see http://blog.crisp.se/2012/10/25/henrikkniberg/agile-product-ownership-in-a-nutshell Special thanks to Alistair Cockburn, Tom & Mary Poppendieck, Jeff Patton, Ron Jeffries, Jeff Sutherland, and Michael Dubakov for providing many of the models, metaphors, and ideas that I use in this presentation. I bought a cool half-acoustic guitar a few months ago and was looking for an excuse to make use of it :o) Tools used: Artrage (drawing program), Wacom Intuos 5 (drawing tablet), Screenflow (screen & audio capture).

Are you looking for a job? If you're watching this video, you're part of a small percentage of people that care about the values and principles of their employer; this is a well known success factor in employee performance and tenure. However, you're competing with many others that apply in bulk for the same position; so how do you capitalize on your time investment? Be proactive! when applying And during interviews, be sure to let recruiters and hiring managers know that you watched this! --- 1. Customer obsession: start with the customer and work backwards; work vigorously to earn and keep customer trust; pay attention to competitors, but keep obsessing over customers 2. Ownership: think like an owner, long term and don’t sacrifice long-term value for short-term results; act on behalf of the entire company, not just for your own team; never say “that’s not my job" 3. Invent and simplify: expect and require innovation and invention from your team and always find ways to simplify; be externally aware, always look for new ideas from everywhere, and don’t be limited by “not invented here" 4. Leaders are right a lot 1:52 : you have strong judgment and good instincts; you seek diverse perspectives and work to disconfirm your beliefs 5. Frugality 3:50 : accomplish more with less. Constraints breed resourcefulness, self-sufficiency and invention. There are no extra points for growing headcount, budget size or fixed expense 6. Hire and develop the best 5:01 : raise the performance bar with every hire and promotion; recognize exceptional talent, and willingly move them throughout the organization; develop leaders and take seriously your role in coaching others 7. Earn trust 5:05 : listen attentively, speak candidly, and treat others respectfully. Be vocally self-critical, even when doing so is awkward or embarrassing; leaders do not believe their or their team’s body odor smells of perfume; benchmark yourself and your team against the best. 8. Insist on the highest standards 7:42 : you have relentlessly high standards - many may think these standards are unreasonably high; you are continually raising the bar and driving your team to deliver high quality products, services and processes; defects do not get sent down the line and problems are fixed so they stay fixed 9. Bias for action 11:34 : speed matters in business. Many decisions and actions are reversible and do not need extensive study. We value calculated risk taking. 10. Learn and be curious 11:34 : you are never done learning and you always seek to improve; you are curious about new possibilities and act to explore them 11. Have backbone. Disagree and commit 13:26 : respectfully challenge decisions when you disagree, even when doing so is uncomfortable or exhausting; have conviction and be tenacious; do not compromise for the sake of social cohesion; once a decision is determined, commit to it. 12. Dive deep 13:26 : operate at all levels, stay connected to the details, audit frequently, and be skeptical when metrics and anecdote differ. No task is beneath you. 13. Think big 16:04 : thinking small is a self-fulfilling prophecy. Create and communicate a bold direction that inspires results. Think differently and look around corners for ways to serve customers. 14. Deliver results 16:04 : focus on the key inputs for your business and deliver with the right quality and in a timely fashion; despite setbacks, rise to the occasion and never settle

My entry into the 2012 Coolest Co-op Competition! At 20 years old, my first co-op provided me an incredible opportunity to be the lead on a marketing company's first web product, ChatterMob. As the Product Manager, I was in charge of every aspect of the product: - Launching a product - Managing developers - User acquisition - Go to market strategy - Hiring new team members - Sales - Customer service - Product roadmaps - Event planning & management - Basic web development & much more. Thank you to Northeastern for providing me this amazing opportunity! ------ What you just saw is the office of the coolest co-op I'll ever work at and the quirky, ingenious team that keeps it together. It's cool not just because of the crazy aesthetic--the stuffed animals, ball pit, Pac-Man machine--but also the office design devoted to nurturing creativity. Pretty much every wall and table surface is dry-erase friendly so we can hash out ideas anywhere and everywhere. The costumes and Nerf guns aren't just for fooling around and letting off steam; they allow us to channel our energy to turn work into play, and use that playful perspective to develop new ideas. But this team isn't just zany and energetic. In the video you saw software developers, graphic designers, and account managers. My fellow teammates represent the sharpest talent from schools all around the Boston area, and Northeastern University has given me the tools I need to put forward my best work and bring the co-op to new heights. I learn just as much from them as they benefit from my skills. The [email protected] office isn't just where we do our best work--it's where we become our best selves. Music by Dan Piet, Software Engineer co-op at [email protected]

Explain why you’ve contacted the employer. 2. Provide insight on who you are and what you offer. 3. Show enthusiasm and interest in hearing (back) from the employer. You can accomplish these three goals in four sentences, which I discuss in the video. You can also grab the free download to see the exact format! ✅The best jobs no longer go to the best candidates. Times have changed. They now go to the people with the best strategies. We transformed over 5,000 careers. Join me at LIG and let me show you how yours will be the next career transformed; https://goo.gl/chwjpr Welcome to this week's episode where I make project management simple for you. To make it applicable to the majority of the audience, I am teaching Project Management Institute's (PMI) project management framework. ________________________________________________ Textbooks and frameworks are always boring. So, to make project management more interesting for you, I ran a project to demonstrate what steps to take and when. You won't regret spending 50 minutes to learn the basics of a wonderful practice called project management. You can also download all the templates I used in the session here (no need to register); https://thecareermastery.com/career-tips/project-management-simplified/ Although I strongly recommend you watch the entire session without skipping, for those of you who are just looking for snippets of information, you may find below the index of the video; 03:03 What is a project, program, and portfolio and how are they different from operations? 04:08 Project = Project Life Cycle + Project Management Process 04:43 Project Life Cycle 06:52 Process Groups 09:27 LIG, PMP certification or CAPM certification, which one is right for you? [Hint: I am biased!] 11:53 Process Groups - Initiation 13:06 Process Groups - Initiation - Project Charter 16:50 Process Groups - Initiation - Stakeholder Identification 18:17 Process Groups - Planning 20:30 Process Groups - Planning - Collecting Requirements 22:45 Process Groups - Planning - Defining the Scope 24:41 Process Groups - Planning - Scope Baseline 25:12 Process Groups - Planning - Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) 32:22 Process Groups - Planning - WBS Dictionary & Scope Creep 34:39 Process Groups - Planning - Time Management / Developing a Schedule 36:00 Process Groups - Planning - Gantt Chart 37:38 Process Groups - Planning - Fast Tracking a Project & Project Crashing 38:52 Process Groups - Planning - Cost Management 39:42 Process Groups - Planning - Budget development (for PMP or CAPM takers) 41:02 Process Groups - Executing 42:04 Process Groups - Executing - Gold Plating 43:16 Process Groups - Monitoring and Controlling 45:00 Process Groups - Monitoring and Controlling - Earned Value 47:57 Process Groups - Closing Process Group _______________________________________________________________ What is even a project? It definitely has a sexy tone to it right? Project… I just love the way it sounds. I wonder how cool it must sound in French. Proje… Well, project is a temporary endeavor to create a unique solution. Yeah that’s operations. No Well, the difference between a project and operations is fairly simple. A project ends. So, it’s temporary. You implement your project, you close it, you create a unique product/service/ or whatever outcome you wanted then you are done. Whereas in operations, it’s on-going and repetitive. You may have also heard about the terms program and portfolio. Let me just quickly explain them here. Program is multiple projects put together. Combined. And Portfolio is similarly. Multiple programs put together. So, it’s project, program, portfolio. Now before I go further, and dive deep. You need to understand something crucial. To run any project, you need 2 methodologies. The first one is a project life cycle and the second one is project management process. Most people confuse these 2. And if these are not clear, you can kiss the PMP certification goodbye. It’s absolutely amazing how many content creators in YouTube confuse these two. They are not interchangeable. You cannot afford to confuse a project life cycle with a project management process. Don’t worry I am going to make it very simple for you. Let’s start with Project Life Cycle. Project Life Cycle is unique to a project, to an industry, to your needs. It’s highly customizable. Think of it like this; a human development is a project. So, your life cycle is; 1) Conceiving 2) Birth 3) Childhood 4) Teenage hood. Teenage hood. Is that a word? Teenaging? 5) Adulthood 6) And death Easy stuff right? So, now if it was an IT project. I am not an IT but it would like something like this; High-level design Detailed Design Coding Testing Installation And Turnover This is project life cycle. The term cycle is a bit confusing here. I think. But who knows. This video covers; project management project management institute pmp project management professional certification project life cycle project management PMI managing a project project management fundamentals fundamentals of project management project management for beginners project management course

This presentation was recorded at GOTO Chicago 2017 http://gotochgo.com Gwen Shapira - Product Manager at Confluent ABSTRACT Data integration is a really difficult problem. We know this because 80% of the time in every project is spent getting the data you want the way you want it. Prior to her current role, she played an instrumental role in Google search, leading the product management efforts for more than 10 years, a period during which Google Search grew from a few hundred thousand to well over a billion searches per day. Marissa led the development of some of Google's most successful services including image, book and product search, toolbar, and iGoogle, and defined such pivotal products as Google News and Gmail. She is listed as an inventor on several patents in artificial intelligence and interface design. Joining as the company's first female engineer in 1999, Marissa has played an important role in developing Google's culture. She graduated with honors from Stanford University with a BS in Symbolic Systems and a MS in Computer Science. For both degrees, she specialized in artificial intelligence. While at Stanford, she taught computer programming to more than 3000 students and received the Centennial Teaching and Forsythe Awards for her contributions to undergraduate education. In 2008, the Illinois Institute of Technology awarded her an honorary doctorate of engineering. It has been quite a journey so far for Marissa, from her beginnings in Wisconsin, to the National Youth Science Camp, on to Stanford University and then landing at Google. Join NPR Correspondent Laura Sydell for a wide-ranging conversation about the educational choices Marissa made, her early role models and mentors, her work at Google, and her continuing role as a mentor -- to the next generation of computer scientists as well as women entrepreneurs like Tanzania's Susan Mashibe, TanJet Founder and Executive Director. The Facts About Tim Shieff Download the Free E-Book 'A Guide For Thriving On A Vegan Diet': http://www.qualitygains.com/ Subscribe for more Gains: http://bit.ly/subscribeytQG If you’re a vegan and have done your homework properly since yesterday, you’ve seen the Tim Shieff video. And as usual, in my role as the views-hungry, business-savy youtube vegan, so I too have to hop on the bandwagon. My goal for this video is to break the standard 50 views benchmark on this channel. I feel competent we’ll hit 51. For those that haven’t seen me already on Vegan Gains’s channel, I’m the manager of 5 fitness centers and a certified vegan online trainer. Today I want to explain you the points that Timothy is making in his video, and give you my two cents about it. “As your health declines you obsess with healing.” – I like this point that Timothy makes. Health is a good we only feel inclined about when it’s declining. This goes back to Maslow’s pyramid of needs. If our physiological needs are not met, we can’t do any other stuff. Health and fitness is the fundament for everything that we do. “Your lack of health feels like a very personal relationship between you and god.” - So you explained, that there’s different way to heal. Which is certainly true. I don’t mean to be rude, but hasn’t the healing that you’ve done over the last couple of years not been effective? There’s a quote of Albert Einstein saying that insanity is trying the same thing over and over again, expecting different results. You’ve tried drinking your urine, but I can’t recall you ever visited a doctor about your illness? "Muscles are becoming very fragile, pushups becoming injured." - Tim is explaining, that he would get injured by doing pushups and that his muscles felt very fragile. I’m not a doctor, but have you ever tried to quantify your pain? These sound like wild guesses that are easily alternated with human biases. If you start a diary where you log your categories of pain on a scale from 1-10 and you do this over at least 3 months, you can actually see, if the method that you are using is working. "I drank my urine for two years." – This just makes me laugh. Tim what are you doing? Again, excuse my French. There’s no reason you should ever drink your urine. Urine is a waste product that your body is trying to get rid off. "General and slow decline." - Tim, have you ever considered the fact that you’re an ageing extreme sports practitioner. Of course your joints feel stiff and yes, there will be a decline. It sounds to me that you’re searching problems that do not exist. Made sense to me logically but not actually biologically (6:30). I think here’s the thing of this whole topic. Let me explain this with the iPhone. The first people that bought it were called the early adopters. They want to try new stuff, just because it’s new. They get overexcited and give in to their feelings. Tim is part of that category. None of the stuff that you’ve tried so far makes sense logically, they make sense in the faulty judgement of our brain, but they’re not backed by first principles or studies. The experiments that you try with your health are infused into your brain by stories. Anecdotal evidences from people with the same faulty, human judgement. "The first time I tried that salmon I had a wet dream." - Well ok. "It just my evidence." - Again anecdotal evidence. You can live life through the way of other people’s experiences, by reading studies or books. Music by CHUKI Beats: http://bit.ly/QGsound Thank you for your time and thank you for your trust. I hope you have a great day. :-)

For more information on Blue Elephant Consulting and product management, go to: www.BlueElephantConsulting.com As a product manager, you want to be able to get your product out in front of as many potential customers as possible. However, this is something that sometimes your company can’t accomplish all by themselves. When you realize this, you often start to look for a partner – somebody who can help change your product development definition and introduce you to more potential customers. This is a great idea, but these joint marketing relationships don’t always work out… For more information on how to become a better product manager, check out my blog The Accidental Product Manager at http://theaccidentalpm.com
