System Architecture: Strategy and Product Development For Complex Systems

01:11:36
About the Presentation The value of the architecture of a system is increasingly recognized across diverse arenas, from power grids to mobile payment systems. As the “DNA” of a system, system architecture provides the basis for competitive advantage, so it’s no surprise that more than 100,000 professionals hold the title of system architect today, and many more are practicing that role under different titles. However, leveraging the role of the architect it to fullest advantage can be challenging. In this webinar, Dr. Bruce Cameron will discuss the importance of architecture, outline challenges, and offer ways to address them. He will cover: the nebulous boundaries of the term “architecture” and how to sharpen them; the power of trading among several architectures early; the analysis and methodologies of system architecture. Dr. Cameron will draw from the recently published System Architecture: Strategy and Product Development for Complex Systems, which he co-authored with MIT Professor Edward Crawley and Cornell Prof. Daniel Selva. About the speaker Bruce Cameron, Ph.D. is the Director of the System Architecture Lab at MIT, and a founder of consulting firm Technology Strategy Partners. He is currently part of the faculty team in MIT SDM’s core course and teaches system architecture and technology strategy at the MIT Sloan School of Management and School of Engineering. Previously, Dr. Cameron oversaw the MIT Commonality Study, which comprised over 30 firms and spanned eight years. Previously, Dr. Cameron worked in high tech and banking, where he built advanced analytics for managing complex development programs. Earlier in his career, he was a system engineer at MDA Space Systems and built hardware that is currently in orbit. Dr. Cameron received his undergraduate degree from the University of Toronto and S.M. and Ph.D. from MIT. He has authored 20 publications and supervised 30 graduate students.

This is a very exciting show today because we get to speak to an executive who has led product development teams who have delivered products that fly off the shelves, literally. It's no coincidence that success has followed our featured guest who leads the product development team that has powered the technology success story, BeyondTrust. Furthermore, I've seen firsthand how today's guest interlocks with functional peers and sales, and marketing to achieve the corporate goals. Making the number can be tough at times for sales and marketing leaders. It's even harder when you don't have a partner in the product team that's giving you products that people want to buy. If you're interested to learn more about how product development and sales can work better together to make your number, this show is for you. Today’s topic is a demonstration of how to understand buyer behavior to accomplish a product to market fit. Joining us for this demonstration is Brad Hibbert, the Chief Technology Officer for BeyondTrust. In the world we live today, all organizations struggle with protecting their technology environments from external attackers or insiders misusing or abusing the privileges. Brad and his team built a platform that enables companies to have proactive ways to reduce the attack surface across assets through Privileged Account Management and Vulnerability Management. Then, if bad things do happen, BeyondTrust provide mechanisms to quickly respond and mitigate or contain those breaches. BeyondTrust's security solutions are trusted by over 4,000 customers worldwide, including half of the Fortune 100. Brad is uniquely qualified to demonstrate how to understand buyer to accomplish a product-to-market fit. His team is responsible for everything from product strategy, to product management, to product engineering. Product strategy is about talking to customers, understanding what we need to build. Product management is how we're going to actually execute against those product strategies. Product engineering is delivering those capabilities to market, and then providing product support to make sure we build those relationships with customers over time. I have seen first-hand how Brad interlocks with sales and marketing to provide products that customers can’t live without. Watch as Brad and I dive deep into the process for understanding buyer behavior to establish a strong product-to-market fit. We begin by providing context to the audience on the problem that BeyondTrust is trying to solve. In the use-case we discuss how to observe the problem and produce evidence of the problem. From there, we connect the product to the problem by identifying how the product solves that problem and the benefits that will motivate customers will buy. Why this topic? Revenue growth will disappoint if your products do not address an urgent problem of a specific buyer that he or she is willing to pay to fix. And your product must do this better than the alternatives. Sometimes product leaders build products that produce customer benefits that don’t address the buyer’s evaluation criteria. This results in poor win rates, wasted resources and poor revenue performance. In the second segment of the show we discuss how to prioritize which buyer problems are worth solving. This involves a deep understanding of how buyers are already investing time, energy and money to solve the problem. Finally, Brad walks us through how competitive solutions solve the buyer’s problem, and how we beat the competition. This is an area where Brad’s advice is a must watch for product, marketing and sales leaders to interlock. If you would like to spend time with me on this topic, come see me in Dallas at The Studio, SBI’s multimillion dollar, one-of-a-kind, state-of-the-art executive briefing center. Bring your executive team, particularly your product, marketing and sales leadership in for a workshop. Sessions at The Studio are experiential and are designed around the principles of interactive exercises, hands-on innovation, and peer-to-peer collaboration. How to Plan a Product Management Career - Ramsey Pryor

04:12
In Chapter 20 of 22 of his 2010 Capture Your Flag interview with host Erik Michielsen, international Internet product management executive Ramsey Pryor provides a product management career development framework. Pryor lists three stages of product management. The first is a mainline product manager role that provides opportunity to give birth to a product, go to market, and learn from the experience. The second stage is a group product manager role that includes managing a product family, defining the company product approach, and managing a product manager team. The third is a company product executive role such as VP Product, that includes managing resources, budget, sales and marketing relationships at an executive-facing level. Within these three groups, Pryor highlights an additional division between new product managers, or trailblazers, and mature product managers, or optimizers. Pryor encourages product managers to get experience in both areas and develop a preference. Pryor earned an MBA from the University of Navarra IESE Business School in Barcelona, Spain and a BA in Economics and Spanish from Northwestern University. Amazon's 14 Leadership Principles via Jeff Bezos

20:21
Amazon Interview Coaching: http://www.amazoninterview.coach/index.html#services --- 1. Customer obsession: start with the customer and work backwards; work vigorously to earn and keep customer trust; pay attention to competitors, but keep obsessing over customers 2. Ownership: think like an owner, long term and don’t sacrifice long-term value for short-term results; act on behalf of the entire company, not just for your own team; never say “that’s not my job" 3. Invent and simplify: expect and require innovation and invention from your team and always find ways to simplify; be externally aware, always look for new ideas from everywhere, and don’t be limited by “not invented here" 4. Leaders are right a lot 1:52 : you have strong judgment and good instincts; you seek diverse perspectives and work to disconfirm your beliefs 5. Frugality 3:50 : accomplish more with less. Constraints breed resourcefulness, self-sufficiency and invention. There are no extra points for growing headcount, budget size or fixed expense 6. Hire and develop the best 5:01 : raise the performance bar with every hire and promotion; recognize exceptional talent, and willingly move them throughout the organization; develop leaders and take seriously your role in coaching others 7. Earn trust 5:05 : listen attentively, speak candidly, and treat others respectfully. Be vocally self-critical, even when doing so is awkward or embarrassing; leaders do not believe their or their team’s body odor smells of perfume; benchmark yourself and your team against the best. 8. Insist on the highest standards 7:42 : you have relentlessly high standards - many may think these standards are unreasonably high; you are continually raising the bar and driving your team to deliver high quality products, services and processes; defects do not get sent down the line and problems are fixed so they stay fixed 9. Bias for action 11:34 : speed matters in business. Many decisions and actions are reversible and do not need extensive study. We value calculated risk taking. 10. Learn and be curious 11:34 : you are never done learning and you always seek to improve; you are curious about new possibilities and act to explore them 11. Have backbone. Disagree and commit 13:26 : respectfully challenge decisions when you disagree, even when doing so is uncomfortable or exhausting; have conviction and be tenacious; do not compromise for the sake of social cohesion; once a decision is determined, commit to it. 12. Dive deep 13:26 : operate at all levels, stay connected to the details, audit frequently, and be skeptical when metrics and anecdote differ. No task is beneath you. 13. Think big 16:04 : thinking small is a self-fulfilling prophecy. Create and communicate a bold direction that inspires results. Think differently and look around corners for ways to serve customers. 14. Deliver results 16:04 : focus on the key inputs for your business and deliver with the right quality and in a timely fashion; despite setbacks, rise to the occasion and never settle
