Prototyping and Model Making - Students of Product Design Episode 5
In students of product design episode 5 I look at prototypes and model making. One of the reasons industrial design projects are not successful is because the designer didn't make enough prototypes to test ideas, prove concepts and highlight problems. Industrial designers have to make prototypes. You can never assume that just because something has been done before, you can progress straight to manufacture without prototyping your design. In this video I demonstrate this by designing a pair of pliers. A simple change to the handle means in use it pinches the palm of your hand. A quick prototype highlights this and saves time, money and embarrassment. So you have to do this phase in the design process to identify problems. But this isn't the only reason to prototype. Prototyping and model making is used to develop new mechanisms, test people's opinions, get important feed back in focus groups and trial different user interactions to work out how acceptable or feasible a new method of doing something would be. So for me, a good prototype is not the one that looks the most beautiful or is the most well made, it's the one that answers questions and moves you forward. Sometimes these are the ones that are a complete disaster as much as the ones that work. It can take more thought and effort to work out how to design the prototype to prove your idea, than the actual design itself. James Dyson said he had to make 5127 prototypes to get his first bag-less vacuum cleaner right, which is why today rapid prototyping is so useful, because of how accurately you can create prototypes from the data that will eventually go for manufacture. But rapid prototyping is not always cost effective or practical to use, most companies only have access to machines with relatively small bed sizes, so it's currently not the right method to use when developing anything large. There is still an important need for more traditional techniques. So don't underestimate how many questions you can answer quickly with card, sellotape, pieces of rubbish and Lego. Students of product design complain that they can't afford materials, but I learnt that everything we surround ourselves with can be repurposed as long as you always use appropriate safety gear and act responsibly. If you are in college or university, take advantage of everything available to you, because you will rarely have access to so much fantastic equipment under one roof again and progress to prototyping as soon as you can, because it will move your designs on faster. I hope you enjoy 'Students of Product Design Episode 5'. More of my work is here: www.producttank.co.uk

Design Testing at Netflix
No one can deny that Netflix has changed the way we watch movies and TV shows. In some studies, Netflix traffic accounts for roughly a third of all bandwidth used on the Internet. With such a well known service, how do they approach testing and improving their product design? In this talk, Anna Blaylock from the Netflix Design Team shares a detailed overview of the design testing process at Netflix. Anna looks at how Netflix encourages new people to join the service, and how it becomes increasingly personalized as you use it.

Product Design Sprint: How a Product Design Sprint Fast Tracks Testing Your Ideas
How many times have you and your team spent countless hours building, bug fixing, finally releasing a new feature only to hear feedback from a customer that it’s not what they wanted? Or worse, they don’t say anything… Why? Because they aren’t even using the new feature! Back to the drawing board… Yet again it again takes weeks or months to build and tweak and nothing changes. You just keep missing the target, asking for more time, money, and resources. But it doesn’t help, and people just end up burning out building the wrong thing. What if I told you that the problem in your product development process is that you are spending too much time, money, and resources and need to cut back? OK, I’ll give you a minute to shake your head at me... Sometimes when we have too much it causes us to go in a lot of different directions. Or worse no direction at all because we’re stuck in a decision deadlock! We lose sight of our customers and end up building just for the sake of building, thinking that we know what problem we are solving, but we don’t. As a result, our product debt (https://youtu.be/ClQyLkyTbAQ) keeps growing and a redesigns don’t help (https://youtu.be/z-PmExpFXRA). So how can we stop building the wrong thing and solving the wrong problem? We can start by constraining the amount of time we have to help us focus on uncovering and solving one problem at a time. And in today’s episode, we’re going to dive into the framework behind this new approach called product design sprints. To help us out, I've invited Charbel Semaan (https://twitter.com/charbeljs), who has been a product designer for the last 20 years and recently launched his brand, Made in Public (https://www.madeinpublic.com/). If you’re eager to get an idea out, worried about how long it’s going to take your team to execute, and concerned about wasting time, money and other resources, then you owe it to yourself to watch today’s episode! Here’s what you’ll learn: - What is a design sprint - When does it make sense to a product design sprint - What do each of the days look like - How constraining the time, energy and money you spend on a problem leads to clarity - How a product design sprint can benefit your overall product development process -- Build is produced as a partnership between Femgineer (http://femgineer.com/) and Pivotal Tracker (https://www.pivotaltracker.com/). 1982 Mercedes-Benz 190 w201 development - design, testing, pre-production
The public and the press were looking towards December 8, 1982 with great expectations, when the compact-class saloons Type 190 and 190 E were presented. These models did not replace previous types, but completed the traditional Mercedes-Benz passenger car program by a third main line. The new range of models was characterised by more compact measures, reduced weight and increased economy without making any compromises as to handling performance, safety and reliability. Minimised energy consumption was reached by using high-strength sheet steel and other weight- reducing materials as well as by aerodynamic optimisation. Passive safety had been the reason for providing series 126 with a forked beam in the front end. With this design principle also the compact-class vehicles fulfilled the criterion of an asymmetric head-on impact with 40 % overlapping and 55 kph. Thus the 190 models were absolutely as safe as the big S-Class saloons. Excellent handling performance was made possible by newly developed front and rear axle constructions. The damper strut front axle with individual A-arm suspension and anti-dive device guarantees a good straight-running stability. Its low overall height created favourable conditions in the engine compartment. A revolutionary novelty was the multilink rear suspension, in which each rear wheel is led by an independent control arm. This optimal wheel control largely compensates lateral and longitudinal forces at all driving conditions, thus avoiding unwanted steering movements of the wheel. Further advantages of this innovative construction are its low weight and the little space it takes. #w201 #mercedes190 #development #oldbenz video © Daimler AG

E4C Webinars l Design, Testing and Implementation of a Lifesaving Product
The Design, Testing and Implementation of a Lifesaving Product About this webinar: According to the WHO, 29% of all deaths in children between the ages of 1-5 are vaccine preventable. One of the greatest challenges to reaching children for vaccination is the sensitive nature of vaccines themselves; vaccines must be kept at precise temperatures until use, to prevent spoiling. Unfortunately, many parts of the developing world lack the infrastructure and electricity to maintain reliable temperature controlled distribution systems. As a result, countless lifesaving vaccines spoil between manufacture and use. As another example, 15% of all deaths in children under 5 are due to pneumonia. When children are hospitalized for pneumonia in many cases they are administered oxygen from an oxygen concentrator – assuming the power is on. Intellectual Ventures has responded to both challenges with innovative products. The Arktek – an extremely efficient passive cold-storage device – in response to this critical issue. A device which is capable of holding temperatures for over a month, and unlike refrigerators, it is transportable, low cost, and low maintenance. To supplement the supply of oxygen during power outages, they repurposed beer kegs to enable doctors to administer oxygen when the power is out. Join this webinar for: -REAL-WORLD EXAMPLES DEMONSTRATING THE CHALLENGES AND SUCCESSES OF DESIGNING, VALIDATING AND MANUFACTURING PRODUCTS -INSIGHTS ON EFFECTIVE MONITORING STRATEGIES TO ENSURE SUSTAINABILITY AND IMPACT IN RESOURCE CONSTRAINED ENVIRONMENTS -GUIDANCE ON HOW TO INNOVATE EFFECTIVELY BASED ON EXISTING SOLUTIONS Presenter: Dr. Stephen Harston has a passion for helping others. After graduating from Brigham Young University, he has used his background in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design and R&D to invent and design products that improve the lives of people in the developing world. Working closely with organizations such as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the World Health Organization, PATH, Global Good and others, he and his team at Intellectual Ventures Laboratory have developed products that are helping save lives in Africa. In addition to the success of the products in the field, these products have also been featured on CNN, Wired Magazine, 60 Minutes and PBS. One of Dr. Harston’s products, a passive vaccine storage device, is currently on display at the Bezos Center for Innovation at the Museum of History and Industry in Seattle. Since 2001 Dr. Harston has been designing for, and traveling to, the developing countries of Africa and South America providing him an unfiltered view of everyday challenges in these regions and insight into how to approach them.
