This video lesson presents the various classroom management styles for educators and teachers to compare to their own style of management. The authoritarian classroom management style is known for strict enforcement of rules but very little involvement from the teacher. The lesson continues with the authoritative style, where teachers do have control of their students, and the teacher cares for their students as well. Other styles include the permissive styles. One of the least effect style in education. This style shows a teacher that doesn't really care for his students, and doesn't control their behavior either. Lastly the indulgent teacher, which cares for the students, but doesn't have any behavior expectations, classroom rules, or procedures. This video is part of a teachings in education playlist designed to help educators develop into better teachers. Other vides from the channel include the flipped classroom, project based learning, lesson planning, differentiated instruction and more.

The best kinds of rules for the classroom and for classroom management will be very specific and observable. You want rules like be seated when the second bell rings or don't talk while others are talking, things that are specific and observable, because when they're that specific and observable it's easy for the kids to understand when they're breaking the rule, and when they're not. When we have rules that are more vague or more big picture like be respectful, be prepared those are great principles. Those are great overarching concepts to shoot for, but what is be respectful look like? What is be prepared look like? You can certainly start with a bigger picture idea like that and then work your way down into the specific observable things you want to see from kids. Generally, you want to see five or fewer rules, not that you only have five rules in your classroom, but when you're going over them with kids you're putting them up on the wall, you want to keep it to something manageable, something understandable, something observable and practicable. Don't talk while others are talking, don't use racial slurs or inappropriate language or put downs in the classroom, come with your materials everyday. These kinds of things kids can understand it's easy for us to see when they're breaking it, and to show them how they are breaking it much easier than if we're saying "You're being disrespectful, and you're breaking the rule of be respectful." Those are a few ideas to get you started with making rules with your class.

In this heartfelt TEDxBeaconStreet talk, education innovator Esther Wojcicki shares the simple but powerful formula she used to raise three highly successful children and to build one of the most dynamic and successful high school media studies programs in the U.S. Her method (TRICK) frees teachers to be learning resources, not just lecturers; engages students and empowers them to teach themselves and each other; and accelerates learning-by-doing in a collaborative, hands-on environment that mirrors the real world of contemporary media. Esther Wojcicki has built the journalism program at Palo Alto (CA) High School from one class of 20 students in 1984 to one of the largest in the nation: 500 students, five teachers, and ten award-winning student-produced publications. She has served as an executive or board member of several organizations, including Creative Commons and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Hyperactive, non-compliant, and disruptive behaviors in the classroom are often challenges for early childhood educators, regardless of whether a young child is diagnosed with ADHD or not. Understanding the rationale for and principles of behavior management and self-regulation approaches can help you support positive development for young children with challenging behaviors using evidence-based strategies. In this webinar you will learn to: • Identify the social-emotional and behavioral needs of young children who are often hyperactive, non-compliant, and disruptive • Describe key principles underlying behavior management interventions • Explain how teacher “co-regulation” and skills instruction can support self-regulation development • List at least two approaches you can use to increase positive classroom behaviors Desiree W. Murray, PhD is a prevention scientist and licensed clinical psychologist with the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute (FPG) at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. She researches self-regulation development and evaluates social-emotional interventions for students with disruptive behavior, including ADHD. Her interests include training teachers and mental health professionals in evidence-based interventions and implementation of programs in schools to support students’ self-regulation. Prior to joining FPG in 2014, Dr. Murray was Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Duke Medical Center, where she served as the Associate Director of the Duke ADHD Program for six years. In the first video (http://youtu.be/mDw13RscNZM) we looked at the atmosphere we permit determines the product we produce. In this classroom management video Mike Reading develops this thought further and look at the principle "A sustained atmosphere will develop into a class culture". The definition of culture is 'that's just what we do around here.' One of the most powerful things a teacher can do is to design and establish the culture they want. Believing that children do well if they can, Debbie is passionate about uncovering and helping other professionals to understand the reasons for disruptive behaviour and the right of these children to appropriate services and approaches within mainstream education. ‘There is always a reason for every behaviour, we must ask which unmet need is at work here? Then do all we can to find a solution’. Debbie is well placed to argue that it is our moral responsibility to radically rethink how our education system views and responds to its most vulnerable and distressed pupils within our mainstream schools. About Debbie Debbie has, for over twenty-five-years, been involved with the education of young people whose behaviour is regarded as challenging. As well as teaching in Therapeutic Communities, Pupil Referral Units, Special Schools and within Hospital Adolescent Psychiatric provision, she has also worked as a Consultant to mainstream schools undertaking observations, making recommendations, modelling new approaches to teachers and delivering whole school staff training.
