One hundred years on from the end of one of the bloodiest chapters in human history, the legacy of the Great War is still apparent, from the perennial poppies to the poetry of Rupert Brooke, Siegfried Sassoon, and Wilfred Owen. Yet, how far has the promise of “lest we forget” been kept? Have we romanticised remembrance beyond recognition, a mere shadow of what the fallen are truly owed? Or, 100 years on, are the lessons of 1918 remembered more potently than ever? Oxford Union Debate: The Role of Universities in Creating Social Impact

01:20:45
In an era of rapid technological and societal disruption, social innovation and entrepreneurship have emerged as promising approaches to confront 'wicked' problems. The theme of this year’s Skoll World Forum, 'The Power of Proximity', underscores the need for social innovation to come from the ground up. Universities – long beacons of intellectual inquiry and knowledge generation – have come under criticism for perceived elitism and disengagement from their communities. Recent evidence suggests that universities are lagging behind the private and public sectors in driving social innovation. Has the ivory tower become an iron cage? This debate was filmed during the Skoll World Forum 2018 in the Oxford Union’s legendary debating chamber. Global leaders from the public, private, and academic sectors engaged in a British Parliamentary-style debate to argue the proposition: "This House believes that universities lack the necessary ‘proximity’ to be effective agents of social innovation in the 21st Century" Speakers for the proposition: Bill Drayton, Ashoka Meagan Fallone, Barefoot College Nicola Steuer, School for Social Entrepreneurs Speakers against the proposition: Agnes Binagwaho, UGHE Ben Nelson, Minerva Project Keith Magee, UCL

With a provocative motion, speakers drawn from the Oxford Saïd faculty and the MBA class of 2015, and plenty of contributions from the floor, the event was lively and challenging. [Intelligence-High School Debate] Governments should provide a universal basic income _ Part.1

24:45
Governments should provide a universal basic income / 정부는 기본 소득 제공을 보장해야한다. What would it be like if governments provided an unconditional sum of money to all citizens regardless of income or property owned? That way, we can spread the wealth in our society, thereby reducing the growing inequality across the nation or even the world. However, others claim that recipients might lose sight of the value of hard work, which is one of the most noble and treasured aspects of life. On the third episode of “Intelligence – High School Debate,” students from Incheon International High School, Seongnam Foreign Language High School, Hana Academy Seoul and Yang Jae High School debate over the motion “This house believes that governments should provide a universal basic income.” So, which two teams will make it into the semifinals this week?
