Let Oracle Do the Heavy Lifting: using compile-time warnings

13:35
The PL/SQL compiler does more than make sure your code can execute. If you turn on compile-time warnings, the compiler will also give you recommendations on improving performance, taking full advantage of PL/SQL features, improving overall code quality. Examples: the compiler can tell you under a number of circumstances that a runtime error will occur; that there are unreachable chunks of code, and more. ======================================== Practically Perfect PL/SQL with Steven Feuerstein Copyright © 2015 Oracle and/or its affiliates. Top Nine Coding Guidelines for Oracle PL/SQL

08:00
My take, as of November 2015, of some of the most helpful guidelines to follow when writing PL/SQL code: 1. MAXSQL - maximize use of SQL first and foremost 2. SPOD - single point of definition 3. TRACE - production-available application-level tracing 4. LOG - consistent, encapsulated error logging 5. BULK - avoid row by row 6. OBVIOUS - make your code tell its own story, comment when it can't 7. NESTPROG - use nested subprograms 8. DECLARE - use declarative features of language 9. WARN - use compile-time warnings Accompanying blog post: http://stevenfeuersteinonplsql.blogspot.com/2015/10/your-ideas-for-more-important-plsql.html ======================================== Practically Perfect PL/SQL with Steven Feuerstein Copyright © 2015 Oracle and/or its affiliates. 8. Use LOG ERRORS to suppress SQL errors at the row level.

06:23
The impact of a non-query DML statement is usually "all or nothing". If my update statement identifies 100 rows to change, then either all 100 rows are changed or none are. And none might be the outcome if, say, an error occurs on just one of the rows (value too large to fit in column, NULL value for non-NULL column, etc.). But if you have a situation in which you would really like to "preserve" as many of those row-level changes as possible, you can add the LOG ERRORS clause to your DML statement. Then, if any row changes raise an error, that information is written to your error log table, and processing continues. IMPORTANT: if you use LOG ERRORS, you must must must check that error log table immediately after the DML statement completes. You should also enhance the default error log table. How to use Compile Time Warnings to Find Dead PL/SQL Code by Steven Feuerstein

17:24
Watch all free Oracle tutorials at http://www.skillbuilders.com/oracle-tutorials. In this tutorial, Oracle ACE Director Steven Feuerstein demonstrates how to use Oracle PL/SQL Compiler to locate - and remove - PL/SQL code that is never executed (i.e. dead code). Steven also demonstrates the "format error backtrace" function to report the precise line number that an error occurred. Finally, Steven demonstrates improving PL/SQL performance with pipelined table functions.

AskTOM Office Hours: PL/SQL Conditional Compilation

25:51
Held on June 5 2018 A developer asked "Can I create an anonymous plsql block that runs against multiple versions of oracle?" so we decided to do our next Office Hours on PL/SQL's conditional compilation feature. Using that feature, the answer is "Yes, you can!" And there's a whole lot more you can do with CC, so we explored that topic in this Office Hours session. 00:45 What is conditional compilation? 04:00 Conditional compilation directives: inquiry, select error 12:06 LiveSQL scripts demonstrating conditional compilation 17:19 Good to Knows for conditional compilation AskTOM Office Hours offers free, monthly training and tips on how to make the most of Oracle Database, from Oracle product managers, developers and evangelists. https://asktom.oracle.com/ Oracle Developers portal: https://developer.oracle.com/ Sign up for an Oracle Cloud trial: https://cloud.oracle.com/en_US/tryit music: bensound.com

7. Compile-time warnings help avoid "WHEN OTHERS THEN NULL".

03:23
One of Tom Kyte's favorite pet peeves, the following exception sections "swallow up" errors. EXCEPTION WHEN OTHERS THEN NULL; EXCEPTION WHEN OTHERS THEN DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE (SQLERRM); In fact, any exception handler that does not re-raise the same exception or another, runs the risk of hiding errors from the calling subprogram, your users, and yourself as you debug your code. Generally, you should log the error, then re-raise it. There are certainly some cases in which this advice does not hold (for example: a function that fetches a single row for a primary key. If there is no row for the key, it's not an application error, so just return NULL). In those cases, include a comment so that the person maintaining your code in the distant future knows that you weren't simply ignoring the Wisdom of the Kyte. Example: EXCEPTION WHEN OTHERS THEN /* No company or this ID, let calling subprogram decide what to do */ RETURN NULL; One way to avoid this problem is to turn on compile-time warnings. Then when your program unit is compiled, you will be warned if the compiler has identified an exception handler that does not contain a RAISE statement or a call to RAISE_APPLICATION_ERROR. Quick Tip: Don't require named notation to call overloadings

02:56
Steven's 177th daily PL/SQL tip (https://twitter.com/search?q=%23177%20%23plsql&src=typd) suggested "Overloading is a fantastic feature, but you should never have to use named notation to distinguish between overloadings." This video explores when this can occur and why you should avoid it.You want to call that subprogram. You NEED to call that subprogram. But you keep getting a compile error: "PLS-00306: wrong number or types of arguments". What is causing this? How do I fix it? In this video, Steven explores the PLS-00306 error and some of its nuances. After watching this, you should be well prepared to quickly resolve PLS-00306 the next time it attacks your code. ====================================== Practically Perfect PL/SQL - Quick Tips with Steven Feuerstein Copyright © 2015 Oracle and/or its affiliates. 4. Outer block unaware of error if not re-raised.

03:03
If you do not re-raise an exception in your exception handler, the outer block doesn't know an error has occurred. Just sayin'. You have a subprogram that invokes another subprogram (or nested block). That "inner" subprogram fails with an exception. It contains an exception handler. It logs the error, but then neglects to re-raise that exception (or another). Control passes out to the invoking subprogram, and it continues executing statements, completely unaware that an error occurred in that inner block. Which means, by the way, that a call to SQLCODE will return 0. This may be just what you want, but make sure you do this deliberately. debugging in ssms debugging t-sql code t sql debug stored procedure sql server management studio debug stored procedure how to debug t sql debug in sql server management studio In this video we will discuss how to debug stored procedures in SQL Server. Setting up the Debugger in SSMS : If you have connected to SQL Server using (local) or . (period), and when you start the debugger you will get the following error Unable to start T-SQL Debugging. Could not connect to computer. To fix this error, use the computer name to connect to the SQL Server instead of using (local) or . For the examples in this video we will be using the following stored procedure. Create procedure spPrintEvenNumbers @Target int as Begin Declare @StartNumber int Set @StartNumber = 1 while(@StartNumber [ @Target) Begin If(@StartNumber%2 = 0) Begin Print @StartNumber End Set @StartNumber = @StartNumber + 1 End Print 'Finished printing even numbers till ' + RTRIM(@Target) End Connect to SQL Server using your computer name, and then execute the above code to create the stored procedure. At this point, open a New Query window. Copy and paste the following T-SQL code to execute the stored procedure. DECLARE @TargetNumber INT SET @TargetNumber = 10 EXECUTE spPrintEvenNumbers @TargetNumber Print 'Done' Starting the Debugger in SSMS : There are 2 ways to start the debugger 1. In SSMS, click on the Debug Menu and select Start Debugging 2. Use the keyboard shortcut ALT + F5 At this point you should have the debugger running. The line that is about to be executed is marked with an yellow arrow Step Over, Step into and Step Out in SSMS : You can find the keyboard shortcuts in the Debug menu in SSMS. Let us understand what Step Over, Step into and Step Out does when debugging the following piece of code 1. There is no difference when you STEP INTO (F11) or STEP OVER (F10) the code on LINE 2 2. On LINE 3, we are calling a Stored Procedure. On this statement if we press F10 (STEP OVER), it won't give us the opportunity to debug the stored procedure code. To be able to debug the stored procedure code you will have to STEP INTO it by pressing F11. 3. If the debugger is in the stored procedure, and you don't want to debug line by line with in that stored procedure, you can STEP OUT of it by pressing SHIFT + F11. When you do this, the debugger completes the execution of the stored procedure and waits on the next line in the main query, i.e on LINE 4 in this example. To stop debugging : There are 2 ways to stop debugging 1. In SSMS, click on the Debug Menu and select Stop Debugging 2. Use the keyboard shortcut SHIFT + F5 Show Next Statement shows the next statement that the debugger is about to execute. Run to Cursor command executes all the statements in a batch up to the current cursor position Locals Window in SSMS : Displays the current values of variables and parameters If you cannot see the locals window or if you have closed it and if you want to open it, you can do so using the following menu option. Locals window is only available if you are in DEBUG mode. Watch Window in SSMS : Just like Locals window, Watch window is used to watch the values of variables. You can add and remove variables from the watch window. To add a variable to the Watch Window, right click on the variable and select "Add Watch" option from the context menu. Call Stack Window in SSMS : Allows you to navigate up and down the call stack to see what values your application is storing at different levels. It's an invaluable tool for determining why your code is doing what it's doing. Immediate Window in SSMS : Very helpful during debugging to evaluate expressions, and print variable values. To clear immediate window type ]cls and press enter. Breakpoints in SSMS : There are 2 ways to set a breakpoint in SSMS. 1. By clicking on the grey margin on the left hand side in SSMS (to remove click again) 2. By pressing F9 (to remove press F9 again) Enable, Disable or Delete all breakpoints : There are 2 ways to Enable, Disable or Delete all breakpoints 1. From the Debug menu 2. From the Breakpoints window. To view Breakpoints window select Debug =] Windows =] Breakpoints or use the keyboard shortcut ALT + CTRL + B Conditional Breakpoint : Conditional Breakpoints are hit only when the specified condition is met. These are extremely useful when you have some kind of a loop and you want to break, only when the loop variable has a specific value (For example loop varible = 100). How to set a conditional break point in SSMS : 1. Right click on the Breakpoint and select Condition from the context menu 2. In the Breakpoint window specify the condition Text version of the video http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2015/09/debugging-sql-server-stored-procedures.html Slides http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2015/09/debugging-sql-server-stored-procedures_28.html

ASP.NET applications are compiled codes, written using the extensible and reusable components or objects present in .Net framework. These codes can use the entire hierarchy of classes in .Net framework.

Oracle 12c PL/SQL Security Features - Lesson 4 of 8 - Roles and PLSQL

06:21
Learn how Roles really work with Oracle PL/SQL and why a privilege granted via a role can't be used in PL/SQL. Demonstrations, examples. See all lessons and many more free Oracle Database tutorials at https://www.skillbuilders.com/free-oracle-database-tutorials John Watson: We have the business of roles - roles and PL/SQL. The point here is that roles are invisible to PL/SQL. When you compile your code, only direct privileges are available. When you run your code, only direct privileges are available. This is for definer's rights, I should say. When you run the code, only direct privileges are available to grant to the definer. In effect, the definer's rights code, all roles are disabled within the stored procedure. And certainly roles are disabled when compiling the code. Functionally, it's equivalent to having issued the command SET ROLE NONE. Why is this? Why is it you can't use your privileges? It's perfectly straightforward. It's a technology limitation. Quickly to see what's going on. If I go in and say - let me connect or create a clear schema. I'll create myself, grant dba to jw identified by jw. I've created a user and given him ridiculously high privileges. Connect.... What can you do? You can do pretty much anything. If he wants to delete from scott.emp, he can do it. Let's roll back, because along with his dba role, he has the ability to pretty much anything to use the data. Now we'll create a procedure. If I create a procedure, create delemp as begin, and in there I delete from scott.emp, end, compilation errors. What are they? Show error. At line 2 table of view doesn't exist. That's line 2 delete from scott.emp. I remember way back in version 7, this cause so much confusion before we realized what was going on. It's quite simple that when we are within the code, as the definer or the invoker, because this is definer's rights code, when we are within the definer's rights code block or indeed when we are compiling a definer's rights code block, the roles are disabled and that's why we cannot see it. But why is this and why do I say it's a technology limitation? It's because roles can be enabled and disabled. They can be enabled or disabled. That makes it logically impossible to consider a role when executing a stored procedure because I might have the role enabled while I compile it, but how do I know that it's going to be enabled when I run it? If I grant execute on the code to a third party, he doesn't have the role at all and that he must not even be logged on. So it becomes a logical impossibility because of the way roles are used because roles are enabled or disabled. You can dynamically switch them on and off. It's a logical impossibility to use role within definer's rights program module. Invoker's rights code, however, is very different. That infuses some interesting issues. Invoker's rights code can use any roles that happen to be enabled for the user at the time that he invokes it in exactly the same way that an anonymous PL/SQL can use any enabled roles. In the security point of view, the definer can in effect grab any roles within his code that the invoker happens to have. Dave: [Question], John, pardon. How do you enable or disable a role? John: Right now there's several techniques. I won't spend too much time demonstrating. The easiest technique will be alter - I can set role none. And that will have disabled all my roles. Now if you look at this, I've got nothing. If I try to run my code and query - let's see. Yes. If I try to delete from scott.emp I can't see it. So I'll set role dba and now of course I can. That's the easiest way. In fact, there are much more [05:07 inaudible] ways to switch roles on and off. We can do it with operating system authentication and I can do it with proxy authentication. We have a persistent session through application server as well as a user when we pass that session out to many of the users that can switch roles on and off. That's the persistent session switch identities. Perhaps, best of all, I can create what I call secure application roles well it protect the role with a package and that can contest any number of issues - environment variables, maybe the time, maybe your IP address, perhaps the program you're using and switch roles on and off accordingly. So there are many ways for controlling roles and you should do it. Blindly granting roles and letting them be enabled all the time is not good security. The end result for this, however, you can get some pretty unexpected results within your code. I've tried to run through in our first half hour some of the issues that we see with PL/SQL in release 11g and earlier. After a short break, we'll move on to the 12c features.

How to install java on Windows 7/8 ( 64bit/32bit)

05:05
Direct Link : 1) Java Win 32 bit : http://download.oracle.com/otn-pub/java/jdk/8u60-b27/jdk-8u60-windows-i586.exe 2) Java Win 64 bit : http://download.oracle.com/otn-pub/java/jdk/8u60-b27/jdk-8u60-windows-x64.exe This is a guide for those who receive " 'Java' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. " This video works for Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7. It also is the same for 64bit and 32bit. The download on the Java page applies to both 32Bit and 64Bit. The only difference is when you install it on 64Bit it will install into \Program Files (x86)\Java If you are on Windows XP once you have Right clicked My computer -- Properties you will need to click on the "Advanced" tab to see Environment Variables. If you have the same problem with RSbot, or this error with another Java application this will probably be the fix for it. If you are trying to compile with things suck as RSbot or an RSPS then instead of downloading JRE download JDK from https://java.com/en/download/ And find the install destination from that after installed, and use that as the Variable path. MNG4: Conditional Compilation in PL/SQL (PL/SQL Channel)

28:27
In Oracle Database 10g and higher, you can use "$" syntax to affect which lines of code in your source program will be compiled and which ignored. Conditional compilation feature can be of great assistance when writing code to run on multiple versions of Oracle and can be used to enforce at compile time code quality rules, among many applications of this feature. This video was taken from PLSQLChannel.com, originally recorded before Steven Feuerstein re-joined Oracle in March 2014. ======================================== Practically Perfect PL/SQL with Steven Feuerstein Copyright © 2015 Oracle and/or its affiliates. Dare to Compile Your Code with -Xlint:all -Werror

58:59
Would you ever dare to enable all compiler warnings? Most people don't, and some people are afraid to, because of what they might find out about their code. The Java compiler is the first line of defense against bugs. Enabling warnings makes it possible for the compiler to tell you more about your code. Fixing warnings will improve your code base, because the warnings will point out bugs, questionable constructs, and use of obsolescent and deprecated interfaces.
This session's speakers cite examples from their experiences in cleaning up warnings in the JDK, with the participation of the OpenJDK community. Don't be afraid to enable compiler warnings! PLSQL SUBPROGRAM ENGLISH TUTORIAL 2.

03:18
PLSQL SUBPROGRAM ENGLISH TUTORIAL 2. I PL/SQL (Procedural Language/Structured Query Language) is Oracle Corporation's procedural extension for SQL and the Oracle relational database. PL/SQL is available in Oracle Database (since version 7), TimesTen in-memory database (since version 11.2.1), and IBM DB2 (since version 9.7).[1] Oracle Corporation usually extends PL/SQL functionality with each successive release of the Oracle Database. It allows declaration of constants and variables, procedures and functions, types and variables of those types, and triggers. One can create PL/SQL units such as procedures, functions, packages, types, and triggers, which are stored in the database for reuse by applications that use any of the Oracle Database programmatic interfaces. PL/SQL works analogously to the embedded procedural languages associated with other relational databases. For example, Sybase ASE and Microsoft SQL Server have Transact-SQL, PostgreSQL has PL/pgSQL (which emulates PL/SQL to an extent), and IBM DB2 includes SQL Procedural Language,[2] which conforms to the ISO SQL’s SQL/PSM standard. The designers of PL/SQL modeled its syntax on that of Ada. Both Ada and PL/SQL have Pascal as a common ancestor, and so PL/SQL also resembles Pascal in several aspects. However, the structure of a PL/SQL package does not resemble the basic Object Pascal program structure as implemented by a Borland Delphi or Free Pascal unit. Programmers can define public and private global data-types, constants and static variables in a PL/SQL package.[3] PL/SQL also allows for the definition of classes and instantiating these as objects in PL/SQL code. This resembles usage in object-oriented programming languages like Object Pascal, C++ and Java. PL/SQL refers to a class as an "Abstract Data Type" (ADT) or "User Defined Type" (UDT), and defines it as an Oracle SQL data-type as opposed to a PL/SQL user-defined type, allowing its use in both the Oracle SQL Engine and the Oracle PL/SQL engine. The constructor and methods of an Abstract Data Type are written in PL/SQL. The resulting Abstract Data Type can operate as an object class in PL/SQL. Such objects can also persist as column values in Oracle database tables. PL/SQL is fundamentally distinct from Transact-SQL, despite superficial similarities. Porting code from one to the other usually involves non-trivial work, not only due to the differences in the feature sets of the two languages,[4] but also due to the very significant differences in the way Oracle and SQL Server deal with concurrency and locking. There are software tools available that claim to facilitate porting including Oracle Translation Scratch Editor,[5] CEITON MSSQL/Oracle Compiler [6] and SwisSQL.[7] The StepSqlite product is a PL/SQL compiler for the popular small database SQLite. PL/SQL Program Unit A PL/SQL program unit is one of the following: PL/SQL anonymous block, procedure, function, package specification, package body, trigger, type specification, type body, library. Program units are the PL/SQL source code that is compiled, developed and ultimately executed on the database. The basic unit of a PL/SQL source program is the block, which groups together related declarations and statements. A PL/SQL block is defined by the keywords DECLARE, BEGIN, EXCEPTION, and END. These keywords divide the block into a declarative part, an executable part, and an exception-handling part. The declaration section is optional and may be used to define and initialize constants and variables. If a variable is not initialized then it defaults to NULL value. The optional exception-handling part is used to handle run time errors. Only the executable part is required. A block can have a label. Package Packages are groups of conceptually linked functions, procedures, variables, PL/SQL table and record TYPE statements, constants, cursors etc. The use of packages promotes re-use of code. Packages are composed of the package specification and an optional package body. The specification is the interface to the application; it declares the types, variables, constants, exceptions, cursors, and subprograms available. The body fully defines cursors and subprograms, and so implements the specification. Two advantages of packages are: Modular approach, encapsulation/hiding of business logic, security, performance improvement, re-usability. They support object-oriented programming features like function overloading and encapsulation. Using package variables one can declare session level (scoped) variables, since variables declared in the package specification have a session scope. Writing Annotation Processors to Aid Your Development Process

01:03:20
Since the introduction of annotations in Java 5, numerous frameworks have made good use of them in a runtime context, but less has been done to take advantage of their compile-time capabilities. Writing annotation processors is straightforward and can turn what would be runtime problems into compile-time warnings or errors. This presentation discusses ways annotation processors can improve the development process and shows a complete example of a processor that provides compile-time verification of certain JPA invariants. Attendees will discover that writing annotation processors is not a black art but something that is safe to "try at home." Copyright © 2013 Oracle and/or its affiliates.
