You never want to begin your sales conversations talking about price or money. This budget discussion should come at the end of the discovery process.                                         The Psychology of Selling Step #13: Use feedback loops. I said earlier that it’s important to make your presentation a two-way dialogue. Feedback loops are the most effective way to do this. These are little questions to ask when you’re talking to prospects that will pull them back into the conversation. So, there you have it. Whether you are trying to compare keyword search volume over time, or identifying which niches are currently trending to focus your marketing efforts, with a few clicks of the mouse you will be able to visually identify what is trending in the mindset of your target audience. Finally, we look at trends in diet patterns, from the New Year's bump to the long-term patterns in lifestyle diets vs. diet fads. This gives a clear picture of what kinds of products people would purchase and what times of years would have the best chance to sell those products. If you have a list in the health and wellness space, you could leverage this information to know exactly what day each year would be the most profitable to launch a specific product offer, whether it is your product or an affiliate offer. Full transcript: "In the square dashboard, you can see real time data about your business, and interactive graphs and reports that you can export to your favorite accounting software. Let’s have a look. Visit square-dot-com-slash--login, and sign in with your username and password. Then, click on the three bars in the upper left corner to access the navigation menu, And then explore all the sections underneath your business name. For now let’s go to sales. The sales summary section shows your gross sales, Discounts, Net sales, Taxes, Tips, Payment types, Fees, And net totals. For any of these pages, you can change the time period of the reports. Look at this week, This month, Or how you’ve done all year. “sales trends” shows how you’ve performed day over day,... Week over week,... And year over year. Payment methods lets you know how much of your sales are cash, Credit, Swiped, Or manually keyed in. “item sales” shows you sales totals by item, so it’s easy to identify your most popular products. And “category sales” shows, of course, sales broken down by preset categories. “mobile staff sales” shows sales information about your remote staff... And “employee sales” lets you see the sales and tip information for your employees, As well as hours worked, And sales per hour. “discounts” lists the frequency and amount of your discounts being applied... “modifier sales” shows how customers adjust their orders. You can also click a deposit record to see all the transactions that make up the total. Going back to the deposit summary page, this is where you can set your deposit schedule. If your close of day is after 5pm pacific time, you might want to set it to a later time so all your sales for the day come in one deposit. Your deposits will come by the second business day, but it’s much easier on your bookkeeping. Those are the basics of tracking your sales in square dashboard. 5 Reasons to Start Locally With Your Product Sales The local retail store is your best place to start trying to make money with your product. I was able to get my product in over 4,500 retail stores, but it all started with me walking into Orchard Nutrition, a small health foods store. The local retailer is the perfect place to test the market for your product, especially if you ever want to make it big. 1. Local stores love to work with local companies. Your local store will most likely have the highest level of sales/month because you are able to put more attention on growing sales. In my hometown of Redding, CA, a homestyle mixes brand called Fabulous Fixins  sells more product per store than competing national brands purely because it is a local company. The owners of this company have been attending craft fairs for decades, and they personally restock all of the local shelves. Retail store owners know this and love to resell their products. 2. Both locals and tourists love to buy local products. There is a special community pride to shopping at your local mom and pop. Smaller companies have a hard time competing with the larger product companies nationwide. This can simply come down to the size of your marketing budget compared to theirs.  So you need to take the fight to your home turf. The local store becomes your anchor point for a larger distribution plan. You will simply be more successful locally than you will be nationally because everyone loves to buy local. Larger chains have even started stocking local products regionally to take advantage of this positive branding effect. 3. You can find out if customers like your product. I am not a big fan of focus groups. Want to know if customers will pay you money for your product? The best way to do this is to put it on the shelf and see if they actually buy it. Another good test market is to sell online but online sales don’t directly correlate with retail shelf sales. Your goal should be to shrink your feedback loop, from product change to customer purchase, as much as possible. You can directly talk with the owner or representative about sales and customer feedback on your product much more easily and quickly than out of town. 4. You can test market locally before you expand. You can easily experiment with your product features, pricing and marketing strategy. There are too many brands that try to get meetings with a big box retailer before they are ready. This is why the big retail buyer is not responding to your meeting request. You need to get some market data under your belt first. Test your marketing plan before you tell a big retailer you are going to be successful in their thousands of retail locations. 5. Your local store is the first step in getting into big retail. To increase your chances for nationwide success, you need to have stories that help you build credibility and momentum. Your broker or product representative needs to tell a retail chain buyer: “This product has been extremely successful in stores very similar to yours.” You need to convince the buyer that you are not a risk for them. They are afraid of committing to unproven products that might collect cobwebs on their shelves. So to all of you who are starting out with your product, go meet with to the local store owners. Getting your product on their shelf is the best way start creating a nationwide brand. Tableau: One Kings Lane is a fast-rising star in a very challenging industry. How is data insight contributing to your success? Geraldine Niemczyk, Manager, Planning and Business Analytics: In order to do retail well, there is a lot of complexity in it. Jeff Ferris, Data Product Manager: We're working with huge amounts of data, where we can start to tease out customer trends, figure out customer clustering. Geraldine: And there are a lot of metrics that go into that: How are you performing? How are you delivering the experience to customers? Tableau: How would you describe One Kings Lane? Jeff: The mission at One Kings Lane is to disrupt the home décor industry. Geraldine: We are changing the way people do home décor. Jeff: We have a very dynamic business that can change day-to-day drastically because we're constantly launching new product. Tableau: What do you think sets your company apart? Rich Hicks, Data Analytics Engineer: People here are very good at what they do. They're amazingly good at what they do. Geraldine: The aesthetics and how we present the product to the customer is off the charts. I've never seen anything like that. Technology has enabled us to become what we stand for as a company, and it has also enabled us to grow so fast. Tableau: How does data play into that? Rich: There's this exponential growth of data in the company that's being used on a daily basis by merchandisers, by marketers, by executive staff. So it's pretty core. Jeff: The engineering team is solving a diverse set of problems. Data is very important to One Kings Lane, and has been since the inception of the company. When you're talking about running as many products as we do, you can't avoid using data. There just isn't enough time in the day for people to manually figure out what is working and what isn't. Tableau: What sort of benefits have you seen from choosing Tableau to understand your data? Jeff: The time saving we've achieved using Tableau is incredible. Rich: Basically anyone in the company can log into Tableau Server and find data. Geraldine: It can save hours in a week, in some cases hours a day. And it actually sparks a little bit of competition for the guys that are sitting (behind me) answering the calls. Tableau: How does it benefit One Kings Lane to put that sort of information into the hands of colleagues who might not traditionally be considered "data people"? Geraldine: I think one of the great features about Tableau is the ability to enable other business users that may not be that savvy or experienced with data to actually look at their own data and make decisions from it. People can look at the same thing that I'm looking at, and can also be self-sufficient and look at other things that may be I would not have been able to spot. Jeff: One Kings Lane is a very visual audience. You've got people that are very aesthetically minded. And if you can't present data in a way that is visually appealing and understandable, it's not going to work. My favorite way to use Tableau is to sit down with someone and that has some questions about the business, and actually start explaining things in real time. I think that's where Tableau shines is I haven't worked with another tool that can keep up with the speed of thought essentially. You can ask a question and then you can start to tease out the answer to that question in front of them visually. Tableau: What would you say to someone considering Tableau? Geraldine: It increases our sales, it decreases our costs, there's a direct impact. It just gets you insight faster. Of all the goals that you might have in your position, you can just accomplish them faster and better (with Tableau). I think it has a huge, positive, rippling effect across the org.

You could say that the item is $15 off, or you could say that you save 50%. It has been shown that using the percentage discount in this case converts at a much higher rate. Why? Because even though it is mathematically the same discount, 50 is a bigger number than 15, so it makes the customer feel like they are saving more money. Sales Psychology Hack #2: Add a Reason for the Discount Customers are more likely to buy an item if they see a reason that it is discounted. The reason for this is because it increases the sense of urgency for the customer. For example, if an item is on sale at 50% off as a special easter sale, then the customer has another added element of scarcity: they know that when Easter ends, that the sale will disappear - and so it reinforces that they need to act now and not miss out. Sales Psychology Hack #3: Highlight Benefits, NOT Product Features When writing ad copy and your product descriptions, discuss how this product will benefit the customer’s life instead of talking about the features of a product. Benefits show the customer how the mug will directly improve their life. If you simply list features, then the customer has to take the time to see how these features will impact them. Do the work for them. Sales Psychology Hack #4: Use Jargon & Slang One of the challenges with dropshipping with Facebook ads is building trust between the potential buyer and you. And one way that you can do that is by including niche-specific jargon and slang in your product ad and descriptions. It shows that you are knowledgeable in the niche, and it builds a connection between you and your potential customers. Sales Psychology Hack #5: Paint Pictures & Overcome Obstacles with Photos Photos/pictures can do more than just show off the product. You can also use them to help the customer imagine themselves using the product - and use them to overcome objections they may have about the product (e.g. have a picture that shows the measurements of the product on it) Sales Psychology Hack #6: Use HD Photos that Customers Can Zoom In On Amazon.com have shown that if customers can zoom in on pictures, it noticeably impacts conversions. Customers like to see finer details of items that they buy, and it also makes your store look more professional - building trust between you and them. Sales Psychology Hack #7: Use Short Product Descriptions Usually, short product descriptions work best over long product descriptions when you are running paid traffic to the pages. Long page copy can be distracting for a customer that is in the mood to impulse purchase. Sales Psychology Hack #8: Use Trust Words & Emblems Another way that you can build trust with potential customers is by including words and emblems on your store from brands/things that people already trust. You can post SSL certificate images (if your site has one installed). And you can highlight certification certificates if the product you’re selling has been approved by one, like the FDA. Sales Psychology Hack #9: Use Emotive Words If your product ad and description, use words that will evoke feelings in a customer. One good feeling to evoke is the feeling of getting a great deal (words that can do this include limited, hurry, slashed, massive and bonus). Another good emotion is curiosity (words that can do this include special, surprise, odd, bizarre and trick). And the final emotion to focus on, is the feeling of looking good (words that do this include gorgeous, stunning and elegant). Sales Psychology Hack #10: FREE is the Most Powerful Word Of All The tried and true technique of selling items for free + just pay shipping still works great. The word “free” is extremely powerful. This technique has been used for years. It’s not always suitable for your promos, but if you get a chance to try it, do it and see your conversions increase.
