For today's Magic: The Gathering video, I go over 5 Modern decks that get significantly better with the release of Guilds of Ravnica. Some of these decks are tier 1 archetypes that you might be extremely familiar with and others are fringe tier 2/tier 3 archetypes that you may be less familiar with. Some of the brand new Guilds of Ravnica cards that we discuss in this video are Nullhide Ferox, Mission Briefing, and Assassins Trophy. I'd love to hear your thoughts on these new MTG cards and if you think these new modern additions will help out these decks! Was there any cards that I missed? Let me know! Soulflayer Combo - Budget Modern Deck Tech ($80)

16:48
Jank Combo deck TIME! Lets take a look at the Soulflayer Combo. So the objective is to dump a bunch of creatures with Keywords abilities on them into your graveyard, play soulflayer with it's delve ability to eat all of said creatures. THEN, swing at your opponents face until they fall down, because having a 4/4 creature with all the keyword abilities = best creature in magic! Repeat until you win the game. Now this is more of a Aggro Combo deck as you do not just win the game once you manage to play a soulflayer, but it is also better then most 2 card combos, it's more like a 1 card combo that gets better with more cards. Budget Magic: $57 (8 tix) Goblin Storm (Modern, Magic Online)

01:30:36
Normally when we play budget decks in Modern, they come in close to our $100 max budget, but every once in a while, a super-cheap, ultra-budget deck manages to find its way onto the series. This is one of those weeks, as we head to Modern to play a $50-ish dollars version of Goblin Storm! The main plan of the deck is simple: resolve a Skirk Prospector along with another Goblin or two, resolve the newly reprinted Fecundity, and proceed to draw our entire deck and win the game! Is it possible for a $50 combo deck to compete in Modern? Let's get to the videos and find out! ◼ This episode of Budget Magic is brought to you by CardKingdom. What is Midrange? - Magic the Gathering - Modern Deck Breakdown

02:58
What is midrange in Magic the Gathering? A lot of new players hear words like aggro and combo and midrange and have no idea what they mean. I aim to make some sense of these more complicated deck archetypes. If you're not a new player and you still don't know what midrange is, that's okay. You can still enjoy this video series I'm starting today. Every player deserves to be on an even playing field when it comes to stuff like this. I want to make more content like this in the future, so subscribe to help support the channel. Utilizing graveyard recursion, land destruction, fast mana affects, the broken cascade mechanic and much, much more it is a Modern deck like no other, and one that can be put together on a budget if need be. Some people categorize Living End as a combo deck, and I’ve heard others describe it as a reanimator deck, but I think it is both more complex and more unique than that. Yes, the deck utilizes a combo to reanimate creatures from your graveyard, but there are other strategies at play and it even has the ability to win if your opponent shuts down the combo or hoses your graveyard. Let’s take a look. There are three steps to Living End: Step 1 - Throw as many creatures as possible in your graveyard. Living End utilizes creature cards that not only allow you to discard them into your graveyard, but that are self-replacing. Most accomplish this through cycling, paying 1 mana to pitch the card and draw another. This creates a powerful engine where you easily draw the land, creatures and combo pieces you need. It is not unusual for this deck to go off turn 2 , although as we’ll discuss in a moment, going off early isn’t always the best strategy with Living End. Step 2 - Cascade into Living End. Cascade is a very, very broken mechanic. When you cast a cascade spell,, exile cards from the top of your library until you exile a nonland card that costs less. You may cast it without paying its mana cost. Put the exiled cards on the bottom in a random order. In living end, you have multiple cards which cascade, but only one valid target in your deck: Living End. This means that when you do choose to cascade, Living End will be the card you cascade into 100% of the time. Step 3 - Profit. Living End destroys destroys all creatures in play and simultaneously brings all creature cards from the graveyard into play. When used correctly you wipe your opponent’s board, while also placing a large number of powerful creatures into play under your command. But here’s where things get interesting. Living End is not a race to the combo, then win deck. There are games where it can be, but to pilot this deck correctly you need to be keenly insightful about each game and how and when to respond. In living end there are several pieces that are used to interact with your opponent’s deck, from Fulminator Mage to destroy their non-basic lands, to Fairie Macabre to exile cards from their graveyard, to Deadshot Minotaur to shoot down their flyers. There’s a host of sideboard options that I’ll talk about in a minute, but my absolute favorite is Ricochet Trap, which let’s you redirect blue spells for one red mana, a delightful way to either counter your opponent’s counter or just mess with their control. In the end, Living End is very much like a game of very intense game of chess, you and your opponent sizing up each other’s strategies and moving, piece by piece, towards victory.

Nurturing dreams of one day making the Pro Tour? This video will give you a basic understanding of what it takes to travel the road to becoming a Pro Magic player. Many of the examples and numbers that I’m using mostly pertain to American players, so you may want to double-check with your local tournament organizers to see how this model is different for you. How and when do I begin? The first thing you need to do if you’d like to become Competitive is to understand what you’re signing up for. Competitive Magic takes a lot of time and investment, not just on a personal level, but monetary as well. You’ll usually need to invest in a competitive level deck, or perhaps several decks, which could cost hundreds if not thousands of dollars. Even if you play limited events, you’ll probably need to spend money on booster packs to help practice your skills. Events will sometimes cost money as well, so you’ll need to budget for that too. You’ll need to spend a significant amount of your time getting to know, test and understand the meta of whatever format you decide to compete in, Limited, Modern, Standard, Vintage, or Legacy. You’ll also need to understand the rules of Magic on a deeper level. You may also need to travel to not just local events, but events across the country - or even the world, on a regular basis. However, the rewards for competitive play are considerable and worth the effort. The competitive community is amazing, and full of people who share your passion and your drive. There’s also the glory of winning an event: name recognition, a sweet trophy, and accumulating Pro Points to get to the next level. Seeing yourself excel in an activity you love is invigorating, and there isn’t quite anything else like it. As long as you understand this level of commitment and you’re up for it, then all you really need to do is grab a deck and show up to a competitive event!

That’s because we’re adept at recognizing patterns, not just in how things look, but how they interact with one another. In Magic, we often see recurring themes and patterns in how certain decks play out, and how they interact not just with your opponent, but the board state as well. We call these archetypes, because we see them come up in almost every format again and again like an old friend, or in some cases, an old nemesis. By labeling these different deck archetypes, we can understand what a deck is trying to do just by hearing the name of it. If I say “Red Deck Wins”, you know this deck is focused on a Aggro strategy, has no Control elements, and uses cards like lightning bolt and goblin guide. It immediately tells you what the deck is trying to do, and how going about it. In this episode, we’ll be exploring the three primary types of deck archetypes we see in Magic: The Gathering: Aggro, Control and Combo. We’ll talk about their strengths, their weaknesses, and how to evaluate cards to build these archetypes in both Limited and Constructed. Which of these archetypes should I play? This depends on the format, and also on the timing. If you’re looking for a good win rate, the best time to play an Aggro strategy is usually right after a set comes out in Standard. Because the format is still being in some ways “figured out”, being proactive and focusing on just killing your opponent is an effective way of getting those early wins. Once a format becomes more defined, it’s easier to build a Control deck to beat what other people are doing, which is usually at the end before the next set is released, or before rotation. Combo is sprinkled throughout the lifespan of a format sometimes, when and if there is a good busted combo in a Control deck. If people are playing a lot of Aggro decks, then it’s a good time to do one of those Engine decks, as long as it’s fast and can kill by turn 5 if there isn’t interaction. But honestly, the real answer to this question is: any of them you want! What is amazing about Magic: the Gathering as a game is its flexibility. You can express yourself through gameplay in almost any way you might wish. I love my Modern Merfolk deck, and no matter how it’s doing in the meta, I’ll continue to play it, regardless of what other people think. For you that might be your Cat tribal Standard deck, your Burn deck, or even 8 Rack. Whatever you choose, follow your bliss and fine tune it to the best of your ability. Different people play Magic differently, and in that lies the inherent beauty and freedom of the game. Much Abrew: 8 Whack Goblins (Modern)

47:18
Yesterday we play RB Goblins, and our biggest takeaway from that deck was that it really made us want to play 8 Whack Goblins, so that's what we're doing today! Apart from getting the taste of the disappointing RB Goblins list our of our mouths, I'm actually really excited to be giving 8 Whack Goblins another shot. Generally, when someone asks me the most competitive budget-friendly started deck for Modern, my answer is 8 Whack, but it's been a little while since I've actually played the deck. How will the hyper-aggressive Goblins list hold up to a metagame fueled by the unbanning of Jace, the Mind Sculptor and Bloodbraid Elf? Is 8 Whack still the best budget-friendly started deck for Modern? Budget Magic: $92 (13 tix) Mono-Red Frenzy (Modern)

01:15:31
Experimental Frenzy is my new obsession. While the card is seeing quite a bit of play in Standard, today's deck is looking to go all-in on the power of the enchantment in Modern! The plan of the deck is to ramp into Experimental Frenzy with a combination of weird red ramp creatures and rituals and play as many cards as possible, since most of the creatures in our deck are free. Then, to finish the game, we use Goblin Bushwhacker and Reckless Bushwhacker to give all of our random free creatures haste and some extra power. How broken can Experimental Frenzy be on a budget in Modern? Let's get to the videos and find out! ◼ This episode of Budget Magic is brought to you by CardKingdom.
