Global Art Forum 10: The Future Was

19:07
Part 1 of the Global Art Forum, an event designed to explore the ways in which artists, writers, technologists, historians, musicians and thinkers have imagined, and are shaping, the future. Amal Khalaf (Artist, researcher, curator and Global Art Forum 10 Co-Director), Uzma Z. Rizvi (Associate Professor of Anthropology and Urban Studies, Pratt Institute of Art and Design and Global Art Forum 10 Co-Director) and Shumon Basar (Writer and Global Art Forum 10 Commissioner) introduce the Forum. The Future Was Global/Art/Forum What did the future look like in the mid-2000s? In the Mid-East? Why did a talks program at a new regional art fair decide to be “global” and a “forum”? Art Dubai’s Director, Antonia Carver, and the Global Art Forum’s Commissioner, Shumon Basar, introduce the evening by traveling ten years in ten minutes. Featuring Antonia Carver (Director, Art Dubai) and Shumon Basar (Writer and Global Art Forum 10 Commissioner) The 2016 Global Art Forum was commissioned by writer Shumon Basar, with artist/curator Amal Khalaf and anthropologist Uzma Z. Rizvi, who co-chaired this special evening of conversations, performances and music. The Forum continues at its home at Art Dubai, March 16-19, 2016, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Presented by Art Dubai in partnership with the ICA. Art Dubai's Global Art Forum is presented by the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority and supported by Dubai Design District (d3). https://www.ica.org.uk/whats-on/global-art-forum-future-was

Self FORMAT - Shumon Basar and Sophia Al Maria (PART 1)

01:13:33
4th July 2018 FORMAT Issue 8, organised and hosted by Shumon Basar FORMAT is a ‘live magazine’ looking at the shapes that discourse takes. The eighth issue takes place at the AA in Summer 2018, and runs from July 4 to July 13. Open to the public, and free of charge, FORMAT No.8 focuses on ‘Self Format.’ Is the ‘individual’ being reinvented and redefined in our age of data capitalism? How much intimacy can be surrendered to surveillance? Is the opposite of the individual still the ‘crowd,’ or, something else? And, would you mind being cloned? Invited guests share their Self Formats from the worlds of art, design, literature, theory, media and more. Shumon Basar presents the predicaments posed by increased automation, AI and robotic reality, where the boundary between a person, the network and being human becomes no boundary at all. Sophia Al Maria describes the eerie and paradoxical impacts on our physical bodies today, from ubiquitous presence to alarming new levels of body dysmorphia: a self turned into multiple selves of several (im)material consistencies. Shumon Basar is a writer, curator and cultural critic. Co-author of The Age of Earthquakes: A Guide to the Extreme Present with Douglas Coupland and Hans Ulrich Obrist, he is also Commissioner of the Global Art Forum in Dubai; Editor-at-large of Tank magazine and Contributing Editor at Bidoun magazine; Director of the Format program at the AA School; a member of Fondazione Prada’s Thought Council and Art Jameel’s Curatorial Council. Sophia Al-Maria is a Qatari-American artist and screenwriter. She is currently writer in residence at the Whitechapel Gallery, London. A collection of Al-Maria’s writing, Sad Sack, will be released later this year with Bookworks UK. Her first book was The Girl Who Fell to Earth (2012).

GLOBAL ART FORUM 11: ROUTE! - Invisible Infrastructures

01:03:44
The Silk Road is one of the most famous trade routes in history. Its coverage was also immense in scale and complex in shape. Trade vectors over very large distances become imaginative ideas in their own right, figures of speech or thought. Artists Slavs and Tatars and Trevor Paglen present the linguistic and informational dimensions of planetary trade routes. They are joined by William Dalrymple and Shumon Basar for discussion.

CULTIVATE ART SHOW

02:19
Launched in October 2004, the Cultivate art forum is not unlike the underground impressionist art movement of the late 1800s. Cultivates purpose is to allow artists that have had very little gallery exposure a chance to have their work showcased. Sabine Smith, the founder of Cultivate, believes the forums success is due in part to the large community of artists that deserve the exposure of having their work displayed in a gallery environment. With events taking place every other month on the 2nd Saturday in a donated space, Cultivate promises to be a fresh and stimulating experience. The premiere event took place on November 8 2004 in a 2 story loft on historic Magazine Street in New Orleans and was attended by over 200 guests. While enjoying music by DJ Stevie B., patrons made solid investments in the 8 emerging talents featured with mediums ranging from furniture design, painting, and video media. Select sponsors included Miller Lite, Red Bull, Rue de la Course coffee house, Sabine Studios and Tyler Lindsay Celebrations. Video was filmed and edited by Joe Zeppi

Peter Vahlefeld – Studio Berlin – Artforum

00:38
Far less frequently do artists appear to challenge outright the images that are available to them. The Art Collectors Club provide one such instance. One occasionally feels that they are not artists at all but a society-reading machine. The rapidly expanding class of gallery- and museumgoers would define themselves as competent consumers of contemporary art, as the spectatorial strata disseminating the new culture of total affirmation, operating in the institutional and commercial intersections where advertising and the circulation of the commodities of art take place The Art Collectors Club had the genius to identify the desires and demands of these new publics early on, and they would cater to this new class of cultural consumer and spectacle tourist, whose perceptual sensorium cohered almost magnetically around those artists who created economic surplus value at near-mythical rates and with a velocity unheard of in any previous era of cultural production, including even that which underwrote Warhol's own meteoric ascent.

A few months ago we met up with them and got a chance to explore their works in progress, look at the variety of materials they use (like old lottery tickets), and hear how they came to develop the pieces that first formed their partnership. GLOBAL ART FORUM 7: CAREERING (Hans-Ulrich Obrist, Shumon Basar, Douglas Coupland, Michael Stipe)

59:38
Do careers only make sense looking backwards or forwards? Did you go to art school before you became an internationally acclaimed rock star or best-selling author? Did your career have a plan? Can you have a career without having a job? If there are no more 'jobs for life' then are there just 'careers for today'? What career advice would you give? Co-director of the Serpentine Gallery, London, Hans-Ulrich Obrist and commissioner of Global Art Forum_7, Shumon Basar host a discussion with artist and novelist Douglas Coupland and artist and former REM lead singer, Michael Stipe. 17-18.3.2013 MATHAF: ARAB MUSEUM OF MODERN ART DOHA 20-23.3.2013 ART DUBAI, MADINAT JUMEIRAH DUBAI Featuring commissioned projects and research, as well as six days of live talks, the Global Art Forum brought together a diverse line-up of participants, including artists, curators, musicians, strategists, thinkers and writers. Founded and produced by Art Dubai, Global Art Forum was presented by the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai Culture), and was held in partnership with Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art (Qatar Museums Authority). In 2013, the seventh iteration of the Global Art Forum was directed by Istanbul based writer/editor HG Masters, and commissioned by writer/curator Shumon Basar. Entitled 'It Means This', the forum explored the concept of 'definitionism': investigating the words, terms, clichés and misunderstandings that proliferate in the art world and beyond. The Forum attempted to (re)define words, phrases and ideas we think we know, and those we need to know, to navigate the 21st century.

GLOBAL ART FORUM 8: 1971-79: The Short Seventies (World)

58:31
DISCUSSION: 1971-79: The Short Seventies (World) A quick glance through Wikipedia tells you that in 1971, Bangladesh fought for independence, and in 1979, the Shah of Iran was ousted by an exiled Ayotollah. Events between sound like a long-lost Billy Joel song: oil crisis, world's first microprocessor, the opening of the World Trade Centre in New York, the death of modern architecture in Chicago, coups in Chile and Greece, to name a few. Were the building blocks of our contemporary world set in place during this short decade, to paraphrase Eric Hobsbawm's famous description of the 20th century? And what were some of the moments Wikipedia fails to remember? Marina Fokidis (Independent curator-writer and founding director of the Kunsthalle Athena & South magazine) and Tirdad Zolghadr (Writer and curator). Hosted by Oscar Guardiola-Rivera (Author and academic) This session was part of Art Dubai's Global Art Forum 8. More information at www.artdubai.ae

Cary Leibowitz: Museum Show

01:06
Cary Leibowitz: Museum Show is the first comprehensive career survey and solo museum exhibition devoted to the New York-based contemporary artist. Since the early 1990s, Leibowitz has carried on with an interdisciplinary practice that turns a critical eye on subjects of identity, modernism, the art market, queer politics, and kitsch. In his comically self-effacing text-based works, for which he is best known, he mixes his obsessions with popular culture and fine art with elements of social commentary, self-loathing, institutional critique, and stand-up comedy. His work manages to seamlessly blend comedy and neurosis in such a way that questions about appearance and identity become a running commentary on the self/other. This exhibition was organized by The Contemporary Jewish Museum, San Francisco, California and curated by Anastasia James. The Houston presentation has been coordinated by CAMH Director Bill Arning. About Cary Leibowitz Cary Leibowitz (b. 1963, New York) also known as “Candyass,” is an American artist whose work has shown in museums and institutions across the globe including The ICA Boston; The Walker Arts Center, Minneapolis; the Frankfurter Kunstverein, Frankfurt; The Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art, Ridgefield, Connecticut; the Guggenheim Museum, New York, New York; The Whitney Museum, New York, New York; The Jewish Museum, New York, New York; MoMA PS1, New York, New York; The Indianapolis Museum of Art, Indianapolis, Indiana; The Wexner Center for the Arts, Columbus, Ohio; The Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Badischer Kunstverein, Karlsruhe, Germany; White Columns, New York, New York; Philadelphia Museum of Jewish Art, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Art Metropole, Toronto, Canada; Kunstverein für die Rheinlande und Westfalen, Düsseldorf; Bonner Kunstverein, Bonn, Germany; Cabinet Gallery, London, United Kingdom; Galleri Nicolai Wallner, Copenhagen, Denmark; Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, Illinois; Galerie Claudio Botello, Turin, Italy; List Visual Arts Center, MIT, Cambridge, Massachusetts. Leibowitz’s work has been included in the landmark exhibitions Too Jewish? Challenging Traditional Identities at The Jewish Museum in New York, New York; In a Different Light at the University Art Museum, University of California at Berkeley; and Bad Girls, New Museum, New York, New York.
