Her story is pretty simple, and she can tell it with a warm feeling in her heart that she wants to pass on to you. She wants to talk to you about her first love. This is not a story about broken hearts or first betrayal – nothing like that. She’s in love and wants to tell the whole world about it. The only unusual thing about her story is that her sweetheart lives in a different city.
She remembers very clearly the first time they met each other online. She was browsing her page on social media, and suddenly she got a notification that someone had liked her profile pic. She checked who it was – some boy her age from a different city. Strange...They had only one friend in common, who was her classmate. Normally Milly didn’t react to random likes, but this time she was curious. The boy, whose name was Stan, looked really enigmatic – long black hair, dark eyes, thoughtful expression…Why not send him a message to ask who he was, she thought? He also posted the kind of music in his feed that she also liked a lot, so she knew that they had at least one topic to chat about without feeling awkward.
He responded at once. He said that he had seen her profile among his suggested friends, and liked her picture just because “I like your picture, isn’t that what likes are about?” He even had a sense of humor! They started chatting, and there wasn’t a single moment of awkwardness that usually occurs when you talk to a stranger. It was that kind of conversation that usually happens between two old friends who have known each other for ages. It seemed like she was talking to her twin.
The next day Stan wrote to Milly again, just to ask what was up. She wanted to respond briefly because, you know, they say a girl shouldn’t be intrusive and ought to keep her distance, but she just couldn’t help it. She wanted to talk to him all the time, and he didn’t seem to object to it.
You know, sometimes falling in love gives you that bittersweet feeling, as though you know from the very beginning that you’re in love now but it won’t last. Well, this time there was only the sweet feeling, and none of the bitterness. Milly knew from the very beginning that Stan was the right one for her. He was nice, smart, caring, handsome and seemed to understand everything about her. The only thing that made her anxious was the distance between them. He was actually a two-hour flight away from her, and they were teenagers, so it’s not like they could easily visit each other for the weekend.
After many hours of chatting over messenger, they decided to have a video chat. Milly remembers feeling so nervous, as if she was going on a real date. From early morning she spent her time doing her hair, thinking about what she would wear, putting on her makeup…She was trembling from head to toe, and when the time finally came to press the button and respond to his call, her hands shook and she only managed to do it at the third attempt. Both of them now recall that first video chat with a great deal of laughter, but at that moment she felt so scared and vulnerable, and it all seemed so deadly serious.
Several months passed, during which they texted each other every day and made regular video calls. But Milly felt that they needed to move forward, which meant meeting each other in real life. She remembers that it was one of the happiest days of her life when Stan told her that his parents were going to visit their relatives in a town close to the city where she lived, and he asked them to bring him along. She was like, “Oh tell me it’s true, tell me you’re not kidding, show me the ticket, you won’t cancel, right?” And he laughed and told her that it really was true, and he would definitely be coming to see her.
And he really did come. Milly can hardly remember that day. She didn’t sleep a single moment the night before, and got up with heart rate at somewhere around 200. She couldn’t breathe, she couldn’t do anything, her hands were trembling…She remembers that while she was traveling to meet him, everything around here appeared hazy. And then she saw him, holding a cute teddy bear in his hands, smiling and looking straight at her. She was just praying he didn’t notice that she was about to faint. Just an hour into their meeting, she managed to start calming down by hugging the teddy bear he had given to her. It was so much better than online…and she felt very miserable that it would soon be over. But he consoled her by saying that they would figure something out. And that’s when they had their first kiss, and it was so breathtaking that Milly can still remember it on her lips.
That was the first and the only time they met in real life. They’re living through high school, and soon the time will come when they can start thinking about what to do next. They’ve been discussing going to college in the same city. And she’s so happy for that.
