Popularizing Science in LIFE Magazine, 1936-1972

59:33
Popularizing Science in LIFE Magazine, 1926-1972: Wonders of Nature, Miracles of Medicine Bert Hansen, Ph.D., Professor of History, Baruch College of the City University of New York From its inception in 1936 until 1972 when it died as a weekly magazine, LIFE was one of the most potent media forces shaping Americans' visual imagery of themselves and their world. Before television, only LIFE gave to the public images that became iconic. This was especially true for medical images, prominent features in this family magazine. In this Medical Center Hour, historian Bert Hansen explores the presentation of natural wonders and medical miracles in LIFE across the magazine's lifespan and considers the implications for an educated public of such a dominant media forum. In the decades since LIFE's demise, with our views of the world no longer framed by the magazine's editors and master photographers, how have ordinary Americans come to understand science and medicine as present in and part of everyday life? What media forces now shape popular perceptions of science and medicine? Today we visited the Museum of Life and Science in Durham, NC. This is a place I had heard of off and on for a while but never made it up to. I gotta say, Michelle, the twins and I were all really impressed with the place! It's called a museum but really was more like an interactive zoo / learning museum / adventure land. There was so many cool things there we didn't even have a chance to visit many of them. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ OurTwinLife's Channel: http://YouTube.com/OurTwinLife ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Hey YouTube, it's Urgo! Life Vs Science 2018: Live at the Camelot Lounge

58:00
Have you ever wondered what it’s like to be a scientist? Do they really wear lab coats? Are they really all timid nerds, like in the movies? All these questions and more were answered at In Situ Science's annual Life Vs Science live podcast recording. Each year we celebrate National Science Week and the Sydney Science Festival with a live podcast at the Camelot Lounge in Sydney's inner west. This wear we we're joined by Dieter Hochuli (USyd), Michael Kasumovic (UNSW), Naomi Koh Belic (UTS) and Sophie Calabretto (MQ) who regaled the audience with tales of their favourite fluids, fatty uber deliveries, Fortnite parenting strategies and the multiple-hat wearing community. We topped off the night by crowning a science champion with a 'Name that Effect' quiz. Thanks to the Camelot Lounge for having us and to everyone who came along on the night, it was an amazing event! David Quammen — The Tangled Tree: A Radical New History of Life (SCIENCE SALON # 33)

01:23:46
Listen to the Podcast (audio) version: https://goo.gl/LyCyoY In this dialogue with one of the best nature and science writers of our generation, David Quammen and Michael Shermer discuss his new book on the history of one of the most exciting revolutions in evolution and genetics that is unfolding before our eyes. In the mid-1970s, scientists began using DNA sequences to reexamine the history of all life. Perhaps the most startling discovery to come out of this new field—the study of life’s diversity and relatedness at the molecular level—is horizontal gene transfer (HGT), or the movement of genes across species lines. It turns out that HGT has been widespread and important. For instance, we now know that roughly eight percent of the human genome arrived not through traditional inheritance from directly ancestral forms, but sideways by viral infection—a type of HGT. In The Tangled Tree David Quammen chronicles these discoveries through the lives of the researchers who made them—such as Carl Woese, the most important little-known biologist of the twentieth century; Lynn Margulis, the notorious maverick whose wild ideas about “mosaic” creatures proved to be true; and Tsutomu Wantanabe, who discovered that the scourge of antibiotic-resistant bacteria is a direct result of horizontal gene transfer, bringing the deep study of genome histories to bear on a global crisis in public health. As well, Quammen and Shermer discuss how molecular studies of evolution have brought startling recognitions about the tangled tree of life—including where we humans fit upon it. Thanks to new technologies such as CRISPR, we now have the ability to alter even our genetic composition—through sideways insertions, as nature has long been doing. They consider the ethical issues involved in bringing back extinct species, the meaning of the “self” if we are actually mosaics of different species, and the trans-humanist dream of re-engineering the human genome so our species can become post-human. David Quammen is the author of a dozen fiction and nonfiction books, including Blood Line and The Song of the Dodo. His book Spillover: Animal Infections and the Next Human Pandemic was a finalist for seven awards and received two of them: the Science and Society Book Award, given by the National Association of Science Writers, and the Society of Biology (UK) Book Award in General Biology. A three-time National Magazine Award winner, he is a contributing writer for National Geographic and has written also for Harper’s, Outside, Esquire, The Atlantic, Powder, and Rolling Stone. He received honorary doctorates from Montana State University and Colorado College. He travels widely on assignment, usually to jungles, mountains, remote islands, and swamps. This interview was recorded on August 2, 2018 as part of the Science Salon series of dialogues hosted by Michael Shermer and presented by The Skeptics Society, in California. - - - Listen to Science Salon via iTunes, Spotify, Google Play Music, Stitcher, iHeartRadio, TuneIn, and Soundcloud https://www.skeptic.com/podcasts/science-salon/ Watch past Science Salon videos https://www.skeptic.com/science-salon/ Learn more about Science Salon: https://www.skeptic.com/science-salon/about/ Learn more about Skeptic https://www.skeptic.com/ - - - BECOME A PATRON You play a vital part in our commitment to promote science and reason. Psychedelic Science: Magic Mushrooms

05:00
Magic mushrooms have been used ritually by the native people of Mesoamerica for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. In the 1950s, R. Gordon Wasson and his wife traveled to Oaxaca, Mexico and participated in a mushroom ritual. That experience led to a 1957 Life magazine article titled "Seeking the Magic Mushroom." The following year, the Swiss scientist Albert Hofman, who had been the first to synthesize LSD in 1938, identified psilocybin and psilocin as the active compounds in magic mushrooms. In 1960, Timothy Leary and Richard Alpert founded the Harvard Psilocybin Project to study the effects of psilocybin on humans. Harvard University famously fired Leary and Alpert in 1963. Serious study of magic mushrooms essentially ended when the compounds psilocybin and psylocin were listed as Schedule I drugs in 1971. However, people around the world have used magic mushrooms with the goals of expanding consciousness and achieving spiritual growth ever since it was popularized by the hippies in the the 1960s. Despite its illegal status, researchers have once again started studying the effects of psilocybin on humans. The results so far have been intriguing. ReasonTV caught up with Roland Griffiths of Johns Hopkins University and Robin Carhart-Harris of Imperial College London at the Psychedelic Science 2013 conference in Oakland, CA to learn what's happening at the cutting edge of psilocybin research. Approximately 5 minutes. Produced by Paul Feine and Alex Manning. The New Science of Radical Life Extension - David Ewing Duncan

01:24:50
How long do you want to live? 80 years, 120 years, 150 years, or forever are possible answers to this question that bestselling science writer David Ewing Duncan, the author of Experimental Man, asked 30,000 people in his new TED e-book, "When I'm 164: The New Science of Radical Life Extension, and What Happens If It Succeeds". While riffing on the Beatle's song "When I'm 164," the book surveys the increasingly legitimate science of radical life extension—from Healthy Living and Genetics to Regeneration and Machine Solutions—and considers the pluses and minuses of living to age 164, or beyond; everything from the impact on population and the cost of living to what happens to love, curiosity, and health. He shares classic stories and myths of people determined to defeat aging and death, and offers real-life tales of the techno-heroes and optimists who believe that technology can solve the "problem" of aging. Concluding that anti-aging technologies will probably succeed in the next 30-50 years despite his earlier skepticism, he brings us back to the age-old question: "will you still need me, will you still feed me, when I'm..." Hello everyone, I thought I'd make a quick video showing you a bit of what I am doing in the lab for my research project. My project involves a lot of laboratory techniques and one of them is the western blot analysis. This technique basically helps me separate and identify particular proteins in samples from my experiments. I only got the chance to show you the first part of it and completely forgot to record the rest of it. Hopefully this gives you more of an idea of how busy my week days are. I will try to do more of these short vlogs in the future.
