03:30
Japanese designs are known to be minimalist yet practical, but what really makes them so distinct from the rest? We spoke to Mike Saw, graphic designer and partner of KONCENT Malaysia, about the Tokyo-based design product shop, aesthetic principles from Japan, and the thought that goes on behind every meticulously crafted design. --- FACEBOOK https://www.facebook.com/myfutvision INSTAGRAM https://www.instagram.com/myfutvision WEBSITE https://www.fut-vision.com EMAIL [email protected]

Naoto Fukusawa on why objects shouldn’t stand out too much (trailer)

01:23
In this presentation at Design Indaba Conference 2015, industrial designer Naoto Fukusawa fleshes out his approach to product design, preferring to see it as a version of “interaction design” with objects as the interfaces. The Japanese designer, described by Bloomberg Business Week as one of the world’s most influential designers, is most popularly known for his minimalist designs for “no-brand” Japanese brand Muji. He has designed mobile phones and CD players, household electrical appliances and architectural products, furniture, lighting and even fashion. His approach has always emphasised the importance of an object or design integrating seamlessly with its surroundings. But it’s a shift that he observes in the design world as a whole, which is becoming more and more interconnected. For design to naturally and inevitably interact with our environment, it must take its cues from the human body. “If you ask your body, your body is more honest than your mind,” he states. “That’s why we focus on your body when we make a design.” People tell him all the time his products look like they have seen them before. He prefers to see it another way. “My product is already in your mind but you have not see it yet.”

Biomimicry design, explained with 99% Invisible. Check them out here: https://99percentinvisible.org/ Subscribe to our channel here: http://goo.gl/0bsAjO Japan’s Shinkansen doesn’t look like your typical train. With its long and pointed nose, it can reach top speeds up to 150–200 miles per hour. It didn’t always look like this. Earlier models were rounder and louder, often suffering from the phenomenon of "tunnel boom," where deafening compressed air would rush out of a tunnel after a train rushed in. But a moment of inspiration from engineer and birdwatcher Eiji Nakatsu led the system to be redesigned based on the aerodynamics of three species of birds. Nakatsu’s case is a fascinating example of biomimicry, the design movement pioneered by biologist and writer Janine Benyus. She's a co-founder of the Biomimicry Institute, a non-profit encouraging creators to discover how big challenges in design, engineering, and sustainability have often already been solved through 3.8 billion years of evolution on earth. We just have to go out and find them. Earthquake proof: Japan building made quake-safe by curtain of cables anchoring it down - TomoNews

06:33
NOMI, JAPAN — A giant curtain of special cables is the latest earthquake-proofing innovation to come out of Japan, and it combines both functionality and sleek design. With Japan's location along the Pacific Ring of Fire making it prone to earthquakes, citizens are continually finding ways to protect the country's infrastructure. CNN reports that textile company Komatsu Seiren has created threads made from thermoplastic carbon fiber composite, which are braided to form a strong yet flexible rod that's as strong as iron, but 90 percent lighter. The rods have been installed outside the company's building - draping all around the structure and essentially tethering the roof to the ground. They are also inside the building, and serve to strengthen the interior walls. When the ground shifts from side to side during an earthquake, the rods stretch and pull the structure back in the opposite direction to prevent shaking. The project is a collaboration between Komatsu and Tokyo-based architectural design firm Kengo Kuma. It will soon be used to reinforce Zenkoji Temple in Nagano, one of Japan's oldest temples. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Tsutsumu - The Art of Japanese Packaging

35:31
Documentary on traditional Japanese forms of packaging for foods, confections and drinks which use natural materials—paper, straw, bamboo, rope, and wood. The original "eco-friendly" way things were done before modernization—nowadays everything is cloaked in 2-3 layers of cellophane and plastic. In Japanese with some English subtitles, but worth watching even if you can't understand the words. "Shizen" means Nature, you'll hear that one a lot. This was made from a VHS tape which was given to me by my packaging design instructor at the Sozosha College of Design in Osaka in the late 1990s.

How to Design and Build This Cool Modern Bench

15:32
This week I designed and built this bench with a modern design and a Japanese influence. The leg and brace design make this bench incredibly strong and I’m confident that the bench can support several hundred pounds. ( At least three grown men). How to Make Handmade Candy With Panda Design | Où se trouve: CandyLabs

Handmade Candy being Made with a Panda Design Did you like this? Watch our other #Candylabs video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tEqvwnlMRvA Buy our video crew a cofee: https://www.ko-fi.com/stereokroma With spectacular reception of our previous how to make traditional hard #candy video, we decided to return to Candy Labs for Round 2. An ever more disappearing art, these specialty candies are made by hand. Our video documents a roughly 3 hour process of one of their popular original designs, and is edited into a 20 minute in-depth episode about a day in the life of a candy maker and the techniques involved in making artisan candy. Follow Lin and Mei as they make an even more complex design: a #Panda. Using old fashion techniques, they transform a giant mass of sugar into tiny sweets - it’s tempting to say you may even need a microscope to see the little face, or at least really good glasses. These candies are made on-site at their store, hidden in a corner of downtown Montreal - see address below. Japanese ZH-29 Copy by Tokyo Gas & Electric

21:39
Sold for $20,700. The Japanese military experimented with self-loading rifle designs through the 1930s, and had 4 major rifles in testing during that period. One was a new design by Kijiro Nambu, one was a Pedersen copy made by the Tokyo Army Arsenal, one was a gas operated toggle locking rifle by the Nippon Special Steel company, and the fourth was this, a ZH-29 copy made by Tokyo Gas & Electric. TG&E was a major industrial concern that made all manner of products, and they chose to copy the ZH-29 for Army rifle trials. However, it appears that while their manufacturing quality was quite good, they lacked the firearms design expertise on staff to fix the problems the rifle was found to have. Specifically, their ZH-29 suffered from substantially inferior accuracy. It seems that no significant changes were made between the first and second major trials (1932 and 1935), and when the accuracy problems appeared unchanged in 1935, they were dropped from competition. Only a handful of these rifles were ever made, between 10 and 25. There are a number of differences between the TG&E rifle and the original Czech ZH-29. The most significant of these is a separate non-reciprocating bolt handle on the TG&E rifle, where the Czechs fixed the handle directly to the bolt carrier body. The Japanese rifle was chambered in 6.5x50SR, of course, and used a new magazine not compatible with the Czech type. The trigger group was also redesigned somewhat, although not in a fundamental way.
