How do you get noticed as an up-and-coming leader, one who is a key member of the team? How do you set yourself apart so that you will be identified for career success ahead of others? With a few consistent actions, you can develop your leadership potential, set yourself apart from the ordinary employee and be noticed as a future leader ahead of your peers. 1. Be a team player. According to the Center for Creative Leadership’s World Leadership Survey, organizations are looking for leaders who are collaborative, inclusive and team-oriented. Helping your team deal with conflict, develop cohesion and work together will quickly set you apart to team leaders and managers. 2. Lead from where you are. A leader isn’t always identified by a title. One of the most difficult things to do—but something that will get you noticed—is leading while not formally in charge. Improving communications and taking on difficult tasks gets you noticed by team leaders and managers. When it’s time for managers to move on to other opportunities, they will likely think of you first as the right one to move into their position. 3. Be an expert, but learn and master new skills. Performing well in your current role is an excellent way to get noticed. After that, look around and identify what additional skills and jobs you can master. Stay on top of changes in your career field. Senior managers will notice people who have already demonstrated a willingness and aptitude to perform at a higher level, and who are eager to learn. 4. Be open to feedback and criticism, and use it to grow. Ask your supervisor for corrective feedback. It might be difficult, but it demonstrates you are not only comfortable with your abilities, but that you take your career growth seriously and are willing to learn from mistakes. When you are criticized or you make a mistake, own it. Ask your manager to describe what the right approach would have been, so you have a clear expectation of what they would have done. 5. Demonstrate a firm understanding of client needs. Up-and-coming leaders set themselves apart by looking for ways to improve products and streamline processes. Use every opportunity to communicate with customers to find out their wants and needs. Identifying ways to save money, while improving client experience, gets you noticed by senior managers because it also benefits their own careers. 6. Learn to communicate well. Future leaders learn to speak and write well. They convey a clear understanding of what needs to be done and why. Speak truthfully and accurately—rather than emotionally—about challenges facing a task or project, and then give positive recommendations about how to overcome them. 7. Take actions and make recommendations for the good of the organization, not you. Senior managers want employees who are fearlessly loyal to them and their team. When making recommendations that conflict with what’s going on, articulate in a positive way how it will be advantageous for the organization and the client. When it’s time to take credit, give it to the entire team. You will gain their loyalty, knowing your motives are for the good of the organization and not yourself. Thanks For Watching. He looks at how when we lead a team, it is important to get everyone engaged with the larger goal. However, though you may have seen through the whole process, it is important to allow team leaders to go through the whole operation as a learning process. ****************** Transcript: http://isha.sadhguru.org/blog/video/better-leadership-style-forceful-or-accommodative%e2%80%8b/ Participant: I’m Anisha. My question is to Sadhguru. We heard Mr. Mariwala talk about a whole scientific process of generating insights and how he has trainings and then he has teams that pair up, and then there’s observations that are recorded. I just wanted to ask you - every word that you speak resonates and connects with so many of us. What is your process of gathering insights? Time 84:52 Sadhguru: Oh. (Laughs) My process of gathering insights is to just look at things as they are without contamining it… contaminating a situation with myself. You understand what I’m saying? (Laughs) I do not contaminate any situation that I enter into with myself. Simply looking at it, the way it is. If you simply look at it, everything is laid out right there. The only person who stands between you and what is in front of you, is yourself. If you remove that one thing, you will see everything just the way it is. So it’s a pretty simple process, but because most people have worked in the reverse direction for a long time, it looks like a very difficult thing - it is not. And about whatever Harsh was saying - it’s all right, many teams observe this, they go to the market, they find out about the rats and the pests and the dealers and stuff. But still the person who’s driving it, if he doesn’t see a certain line, all that information will mean nothing. It is because there is one person, who is seeing a certain line, and… (Laughs) When you drive a team, there are two aspects to it. One thing is you have to make everybody get engaged with what they’re doing, have as much insight into whatever little things they’re fulfilling - the little pieces of the whole larger piece. At the same time, you might have seen through the whole thing, but still you have to allow the team a learning process that… and make them feel they arrived there by themselves, which is a very subtle operation. Even if you know it, if you spell it out and say, “Just do it!” Without enthusiasm, if the team goes into it, the thing will not succeed. So you still have to… even if you’ve seen it beforehand, you still have to make… give time for people to det… make their own discoveries, arrive at it, do a little bit of, you know, trial and error and everything though you know what to do. Because that’s important because if the team doesn’t engage like they are discovering something and doing something and making something new happen - you know it all, you won’t have a vibrant team. There are some points, where there are chasms that you have to cross. There you don’t… Yesterday, Dilip was saying he does the military style of function. When there are deep chasms to cross, you take on as a military commander and just tell them, “Shut up and cross” because there if you allow everybody’s opinion and ideas to happen, most probably you will go in. So, this is subtle (Laughs), you know I am sure every business person is doing this. There are times when you are letting the teams lead you and there are times when you take charge of everything and force it across certain points. About Servant Leadership: Servant Leadership is a participative form of leadership that shares some of the characteristics of transformational leadership. It blends a concern for transformation at an organisational level with individualised consideration. It emphasises the need to replace self-interest with service to others as the basis for using power. Servant Leadership is opposed to the command-and-control type of autocratic leadership. There is now a clear consensus among modern management theorists that autocratic leadership needs to be replaced by leadership that empowers workers. In today’s environment, command-and-control leadership no longer works, because leaders must earn people’s respect and trust. This is by far the most interesting concept I have come across. Reason being it took me a very long time to decipher the information because every article I read talks about how good or bad the model is but does not give explanation how to use it. I tried various books, videos, research article, youtube and found that everyone is reiterating the same information. I then reached out to my online facilitator at AIB Dr Aaron Wijeratne who broke it down with using any academic nuances. He also provided examples which reinforced the learning. Finally, I had my “eureka” moment. Let’s dive in on how this model works. If you remember the last couple of videos we discussed about Situational Leadership and Path theory which dealt with how to be an effective leader based on changing situation. Types of Leadership Styles with Ms. Radha Soni, Assistant Professor in Biyani Group of Colleges, Jaipur. **************************** 1. Autocratic Leadership Autocratic leadership style is centered on the boss. In this leadership the leader holds all authority and responsibility. In this leadership, leaders make decisions on their own without consulting subordinates. They reach decisions, communicate them to subordinates and expect prompt implementation. Autocratic work environment does normally have little or no flexibility. In this kind of leadership, guidelines, procedures and policies are all natural additions of an autocratic leader. Statistically, there are very few situations that can actually support autocratic leadership 2. Democratic Leadership In this leadership style, subordinates are involved in making decisions. Unlike autocratic, this headship is centered on subordinates’ contributions. The democratic leader holds final responsibility, but he or she is known to delegate authority to other people, who determine work projects. Team leadership is about working with the hearts and minds of all those involved. It also recognizes that teamwork may not always involve trusting cooperative relationships. The most challenging aspect of this leadership is whether or not it will succeed. According to Harvard Business Review, team leadership may fail because of poor leadership qualities. 3. Strategic Leadership Style Strategic leadership is one that involves a leader who is essentially the head of an organization. The strategic leader is not limited to those at the top of the organization. It is geared to a wider audience at all levels who want to create a high performance 4. Laissez-faire Leadership Laissez-faire leadership gives authority to employees. According to azcentral, departments or subordinates are allowed to work as they choose with minimal or no interference. According to research, this kind of leadership has been consistently found to be the least satisfying and least effective management style 5. Transactional Leadership This is a leadership that maintains or continues the status quo. It is also the leadership that involves an exchange process, whereby followers get immediate, tangible rewards for carrying out the leader’s orders. Transactional leadership can sound rather basic, with its focus on exchange. Being clear, focusing on expectations, giving feedback are all important leadership skills. According to Boundless.com, transactional leadership behaviors can include: clarifying what is expected of followers’ performance; explaining how to meet such expectations; and allocating rewards that are contingent on meeting objectives. 6. Coaching Leadership Coaching leadership involves teaching and supervising followers. A coaching leader is highly operational in setting where results/ performance require improvement. Basically, in this kind of leadership, followers are helped to improve their skills. Coaching leadership does the following: motivates followers, inspires followers and encourages followers. 7. Charismatic Leadership In this leadership, the charismatic leader manifests his or her revolutionary power. Charisma does not mean sheer behavioral change. It actually involves a transformation of followers’ values and beliefs. Therefore, this distinguishes a charismatic leader from a simply populist leader who may affect attitudes towards specific objects, but who is not prepared as the charismatic leader is, to transform the underlying normative orientation that structures specific attitudes. 8. Visionary Leadership This form of leadership involves leaders who recognize that the methods, steps and processes of leadership are all obtained with and through people. There is never a one-size-fits-all leadership style for every business – all companies operate differently and certain traits will be more successful in some environments than others. However, having a thorough understanding of various leadership styles enables senior executives to not only adopt the correct characteristics for themselves, but also choose better managers throughout the organisation. Here is a list of nine common leadership styles and a brief summary of their advantages and disadvantages. Transformational leadership Often considered among the most desirable employees, people who show transformational leadership typically inspire staff through effective communication and by creating an environment of intellectual stimulation. However, these individuals are often blue-sky thinkers and may require more detail-oriented managers to successfully implement their strategic visions. Transactional leadership Transactional leadership is focused on group organisation, establishing a clear chain of command and implementing a carrot-and-stick approach to management activities. It is considered transactional because leaders offer an exchange; they reward good performances, while punishing bad practice. While this can be an effective way of completing short-term tasks, employees are unlikely to reach their full creative potential in such conditions. Servant leadership People who practice servant leadership prefer power-sharing models of authority, prioritising the needs of their team and encouraging collective decision-making. Research by Catalyst has claimed this style, described as altruistic leadership by the company, can improve diversity and boost morale. However, detractors suggest servant leaders lack authority and suffer a conflict of interest by putting their employees ahead of business objectives. Autocratic leadership A more extreme version of transactional leadership, autocratic leaders have significant control over staff and rarely consider worker suggestions or share power. Ruling with an iron fist is rarely appreciated by staff, which can lead to high turnover and absenteeism. There can also be a lack of creativity due to strategic direction coming from a single individual. This leadership style is best suited to environments where jobs are fairly routine or require limited skills. It is also common in military organisations. Laissez-faire leadership More commonly used to describe economic environments, laissez-faire literally means “let them do” in French. This is typically translated to “let it be”. As such, laissez-faire leaders are characterised by their hands-off approach, allowing employees to get on with tasks as they see fit. This can be effective in creative jobs or workplaces where employees are very experienced. However, it is important that leaders monitor performance and effectively communicate expectations to prevent work standards slipping. Democratic leadership Also known as participative leadership, this style – as the name suggests – means leaders often ask for input from team members before making a final decision. Workers usually report higher levels of job satisfaction in these environments and the company can benefit from better creativity. On the downside, the democratic process is normally slower and may not function well in workplaces where quick decision-making is crucial. Bureaucratic leadership Bureaucratic leadership models are most often implemented in highly regulated or administrative environments, where adherence to the rules and a defined hierarchy are important. These leaders ensure people follow the rules and carry out tasks by the book. Naturally, this works well in certain roles – such as health and safety – but can stifle innovation and creativity in more agile, fast-paced companies.

When placed into the context of leadership, it depicts a leader who allows subordinates to work on their own. What is your leadership style? Are you a get-it-done type or a caring, relationship builder? Are you touchy feely, go-with-your gut person or a cautious, information gatherer? Are you direct, often interpreted as blunt, or more emotional, viewed as wishy-washy? Knowing your leadership style is important to your success in both your business and personal lives. In business, it enables you to leverage your talent and seek out the right new hires to complement the leadership styles of your current management team. There is no right or wrong style, and the combination you choose for your business can be the 'make or brake' of achieving your goals. Using the DISC profiles, as an example, here are two aspects of leadership styles. Graphed on this chart, we have the two extremes of communication styles -- casual and formal -- plotted against personality types -- extroverted and introverted. Each of the four DISC types is placed in a quadrant. Casual communicators tend to use less formal language, include feelings in the discussion and seem less articulate when speaking. Formal communicators, on the other hand, use fewer words, come across as more direct and always have their i's dotted and t's crossed before weighing in. Likewise, extroverts and introverts have very different styles. Extroverts are the talkers who speak as they process thoughts, while introverts are considered good listeners because they observe more than they verbalize. Dominant styles are more results-based and direct while Supportive types are all about relationships and people. Inspiring leaders are all about the why, often making decisions based on emotions and feelings. Their opposites, Cautious personalities, are all about the information, and often put off making decisions until they have collected enough data. Now let's look at how these characteristics play out in a boardroom... The company's leader is a Dominant, both extroverted and formal. He begins a meeting that was scheduled weeks before but may or may not have told anyone else what the agenda is. In the meeting, he dives straight to the deliverables and action items because spending time on small talk and relationship building is a waste, not to mention annoying. He knows exactly what he wants from everyone and assumes that they do to - telling the team what will happen, not by asking for input or getting buy-in. The Supportive people are quietly feeling uncared for and unloved with their leader's abrupt start. They smile and nod while trying not to let on because they want the best for the leader and the organization, and are ready to contribute. They also secretly wonder if the leader is having a tough time personally and maybe he just needs a hug later. The Cautious people are sitting with their arms crossed and not going to play along because there is no agenda to define the meeting and therefore they are not prepared with meaningful input. They are insulted they weren't asked to weigh in with their expertise and research, but aren't about to put their neck out and look stupid. The Inspiring types are talking about their weekend regardless of the agenda, interrupting the Dominant leader and excited to be out of their cubicle and in a room full of other people! They aren't as concerned about where the company is going as they are in getting there together and the social events that will happen along the way. Sound like your office? Of course, this is an oversimplification of the personality profiling and leadership team design process, but it gives you an understanding of how your leadership style affects your working relationships. Here is a great example of Pacesetting as a Leadership Style In this particular style the team leader sets high standards for performance, and leads by example. Subordinates are unlikely to innovate incase the standards fall and the task s taken from them. As a result of this there is often reluctant delegation with an obsession about doing things better, faster and quicker. It does, however, pinpoint poor performance and then as a result it can eradicate it. A pacesetters demand for excellence can sometimes overwhelm a number of team members as sometimes there is a thought that although they can do that, there is no way that I will be able to do it. Poor performance is normally not tolerated, with any form of praise rarely used. There is not normally any vision created, and it looks towards the short term only. Your Leadership Style might be holding back Continuous Improvement in your Organization Most leaders want continuous improvement to take place in their organization. But do you ever stop and question your own leadership style and whether it promotes or hinders people from making improvements? Last week I attended the Salon sur les Meilleures Pratiques d’Affaires (https://www.qualite.qc.ca/salon-mpa) (Best Business Practices) organized by le Movement Québecois de la Qualité. The well attended trade show and conference was full of companies showcasing examples of their continuous improvement successes as well as vendors of all types of quality programs, consulting services and training courses. What was very clear from those promoting best practices was the importance of leaders adapting a participative leadership style. All the best practices for assuring quality standards and high performance are based on employee participation. This translates into empowered, autonomous employees and teams. So what is a participative leadership style and how to develop it? It means involving people in decision making and coming to consensus on decisions that employees are responsible for implementing. It means establishing expectations for performance and productivity and empowering teams to work together and solve problems on their own to continuously improve their work. It means listening and giving feedback but not telling. It means coaching people rather than ordering or ignoring. Participative leadership is just one style. On one end is autocratic leadership and the opposite end is democratic. There are times you must be autocratic in your style. For example the fire chief practices participative leadership when there is no fire. But when there is a fire he becomes the director and shouts orders. However, everyone accepts this because they understand the situation and trust the leader. They know this style is required under the circumstance. The same is true in business. Sometimes you need to practice participate leadership and at other times autocratic. But to promote teamwork and continuous improvement you need to adapt a participative style most of the time. This requires a shift in thinking and behaviour. The fundamental behaviors for the leader to put into practice to be a participative leader are: 1. Maintain and grow the self-esteem of employees 2. Listen and respond with empathy 3. Ask for help to solve problems 4. Provide support without removing responsibility There fundamentals are well explained in the narrative book Zapp! The Lightning of Empowerment (http://www.amazon.ca/Zapp-The-Lightning-Empowerment-Productivity/dp/0449002829). In fact we use this book as part of our Style of Leadership and Team Development (http://www.optimusperformance.ca/your-leadership-style-might-be-holding-back-continuous-improvement-in-your-organization-2/) training program for leaders. Leaders must strike a balance between being and doing. In other words before doing the practices associated with quality programs and continuous improvement initiatives, they must start putting into practice the behaviors that foster trust, openness and engagement. The key is to start step by step. Develop an understanding by reading Zapp or get some training in interpersonal behavior skills aimed at coaching people and developing a participative leadership style. Hold problem solving meetings at the management level to eliminate problems that cause you to be fighting fires too often. If you can shift more time to plan, set goals, coach people etc. you will start becoming a participative leader.
