Fast fashion is a major contributor to the world's clothing waste problem. The German-born designer Karl Lagerfeld has died at the age of 85. Also known as "Kaiser Karl." he was a designer, an artist and a fashion icon. No living fashion designer, let alone a German one, was as celebrated as Karl Lagerfeld. On September 10, the man with the trademark ponytail and sunglasses will celebrate his 85th birthday - it’s believed. From dawn to late morning, Karl Lagerfeld designs for Chanel, Fendi and his own signature brand - a combined workload of up to 15 collections a year. A workhorse who never takes breaks or even a vacation, he is also a photographer and filmmaker. His passion for fashion was awakened by a Dior show in Hamburg in 1950. Four years later, at the age of 17, Karl Lagerfeld was hired as an assistant to Pierre Balmain. Karl Lagerfeld recounts his beginnings in the industry, as well as his upper class background and childhood in Schleswig-Holstein. Karl Lagerfeld was greatly influenced by his mother, whom he describes as his personal style icon. Karl Lagerfeld's caustic comments were notorious and dreaded by those at the receiving end. As an artist, Karl Lagerfeld worked in several media, from pictures and photographs to book illustrations and videos. The documentary of 2015 follows Karl Lagerfeld to exhibition openings, during the hectic preparations for his fashion shows, and at photo shoots in Paris as it seeks to uncover the man behind the mask. _______ DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines. 유통계에 부는 '친환경 바람' 패션업계도 강타 South Korea's fashion industry is taking strides to "go green." The move is being driven by local consumers who increasingly make their shopping choices based on their ethical principles. Hong Yoo reports. Sometimes it's not the design or the color of the clothes that matters to consumers -- it's the material. And a new trend says materials need to be eco-friendly. The fashion industry is creating "green clothes" -- garments made from environmentally friendly materials. K2, a Korean outdoor brand, has come up with a product made out of eco-friendly hanji -- that is, traditional paper -- handmade from mulberry trees, and other natural sources like Chinese yams. They are also doing a "clean bag campaign," handing out bags to hikers at the entraces to mountain trails so they can collect their garbage. "We hope that through our campaign, we can not only sustainably protect the environment but create a synergy effect and get our customers to be part of it too." The brand Patagonia has released a "ReCircle Collection" using recyclable wood pulp, and they're donating 1% of their annual profit each year to environmental organizations worldwide. Marmot, another outdoor brand, has released the "Marmot thread line" using thread made from plastic waste. "This t-shirt is made out of 50% of upcycled plastic and 50% recycled cotton, which saves 435 liters of water compared to the normal process of making a t-shirt. It uses about 3 recycled plastic bottles, and reduces C-O-2 emissions by 300 grams." "When clothes are thrown away, they don't decompose because they're mostly made out of petroleum-based materials, and burning them releases toxic substances into the air. Therefore, recycling the material is a way of getting rid of environmentally harmful materials." The fashion brand Beanpole has yet another campaign -- donating old bicycles that have been refurbished like new. It's called "Bike We Like." The bicycles are donated to island villages. With more attention on environmental issues and the damage caused by certain materials or methods of production, the demand for eco-friendly products is growing, and the clothing industry will have to keep adapting to consumers' growing preference for environmentally-friendly products. Now we are going to take a look at the largest fashion hub in Korea, Seoul′s iconic Dongdaemun Fashion Town,... which is visited by millions of tourists and local shoppers every year. Park Ji-won has this week′s Industry Insight. You can′t talk about Korea′s fashion industry without mentioning the Dongdaemun fashion market. Dongdaemun Fashion Town is the largest clothing market in Korea,... and about one-third of all Korea′s clothing distributors are based near the region. From textiles and clothing subsidiary materials... to sewing factories and wholesale and retail shops,... if it has to do with clothing and fashion, you′ll find it here. A designer′s idea can be made into a final product... in just a day. Let′s take a look. This is Dongdaemun Fashion Town, the location of more than 30 fashion malls and tens of thousands of small clothing shops. "It′s really amazing all the district, and all the fashion is really nice." "I sometimes see items with unique designs that I cannot find at brand name or department stores." Retail shops are open from midnight or 2 a.m. and wholesale shops open from 8 p.m. to the next morning, meaning the market operates 24 hours-a-day. What′s peculiar to the district is that it′s like a complete fashion ecosystem, where everything about fashion is clustered together. Thousands of fabric and clothing subsidiary shops, and more than 20-thousand small sewing factories are all nearby. Designers can turn their ideas into clothes in just a day by making a sample, and once the design is confirmed, mass production can start after another day or two. With Dongdaemun′s fast yet sophisticated designs gaining global recognition, many orders now come from abroad. "Now we get many orders for samples from China, as Chinese buyers visit Dongdaemun often." The Dongdaemun district makes more money from exports than domestic sales, especially in the wholesale market. "Roughly 60 percent of the town′s annual revenue comes from exports. International buyers are mostly from China, Taiwan and Japan." The fashion town also serves as a testbed for many up-and-coming designers. "This is a hip fashion mecca where you can make and sell clothes. The region helps with my market research and market sourcing." Some designers have successfully grown from single shops into fashion empires. This modern brand began from a shop in Dongdaemun,... but has expanded to include dozens of shops in China. "Codes Combine started as a shop in Dongdaemun in 2002. Now we have many products in many categories, particularly menswear, underwear and a kids′ clothing line." Fashion Group Hyungji,... which has the number-one market share in women′s clothes as a domestic company,.. also started as a humble shop in Dongdaemun market in the early 1980s. "The founder of the group still emphasizes the so-called Dongdaemun spirit,... which is characterized by designs that ar

There are calls for local fashion designers to give up on the idea of "New Zealand made" after 2018 proved to be a challenging year for the country's fashion industry, with some top designers packing up shop. Designers here are struggling to keep the Made in New Zealand label a reality. "I think it's an incredibly sad space to be occupying at the moment. We're looking down the gunnels of not a lot of us left," fashion designer Annah Stretton told 1 NEWS. Kristine Crabb recently announced she's closing down her "Miss Crabb" label. "I just kind of woke up one morning in October, and I was like, 'I don't want to do this anymore'," she said. And she's not alone. In recent times, fashion designer Andrea Moore has gone out of business and shoemaker Minnie Cooper has called it a day. Ms Crabb said: "I think maybe the last couple of years I've felt a little bit under pressure creatively." After 15 years in the industry, it's a struggle competing with the big importers. "The industry is shrinking every year, so that makes it quite hard," she said. Fashion brand World courted controversy for selling t-shirts with a "Made in New Zealand" tag, when the garment itself was manufactured in Bangladesh.

As London Fashion Week commences, many fear what Brexit will bring to the fashion industry. The thriving industry generated about 41 billion US dollars last year. Industry leaders warn that Brexit could jeopardise the flow of creative people and ideas. CEO of Fashion Roundtable, Tamara Cincik wants people to understand that fashion is more than catwalks. “This is a business that day in day out provides almost 900,000 jobs for the UK economy. You know, you will know, all of us will know someone down the line who is working somewhere in, whether it's in retail, or it's in designer or it's in import or export or logistics who are in some way involved with the fashion industry," said Tamara.

A major reason for that... is the street fashion shops lining the sidewalks of Garosu-gil. "Korean clothes is cheaper than Japan and more fashionable." "It provide us with a reasonable price. With that reason, I think it's good for us to go shopping around ." "And this so-called street fashion of Korea... that incorporates Seoul's overall pop culture driven by Korean celebrities and entertainment content is what many point to as the hotbed of Korean fashion." Jung Ku-ho, director of the ongoing Seoul Fashion Week, says... Korean fashion has carved out a niche for itself. "Foreign fashion weeks focus on high-end brands, but Korea's fashion week features clothes with more street and pop culture elements. And that's what foreign buyers and the press are interested in, too." The rising brand value of the capital city of Seoul... is also drawing major fashion houses, which have begun to recognize its rise in the world of Asian fashion. Chanel brought its cruise fashion show to Seoul for the first time last year... and French lifestyle brand Maison Kitsune paid tribute to Korea in its 2015 fall/winter collection. Jung also says... fashion is part of the culture boom driving the larger Korean Wave. "What clothes Seoulites wear and what they eat and the culture of the city in general seem to be garnering interest from around the world these days." Jung, who's a successful designer himself, adds that,... to survive in the already saturated industry,... local designers need to take advantage of Korea's Internet infrastructure. "Focusing only on the local market is no longer working. Designers should think of the global market as a city and find ways to promote their brands and communicate with their customers. These days, they can do it using social media." He adds... this is also a way for them to cut costs in the current economic downturn. Hwang Ji-hye, Arirang News. Quartz fashion reporter Marc Bain explores how the notoriously low-tech apparel industry is now on the cusp of a new era of customizable, mass-produced fashion. -- Quartz is a digital news outlet dedicated to telling stories at the intersection of the important and the interesting. Knockoffs are everywhere in fashion. So is the controversy they inspire. Subscribe to our channel! http://goo.gl/0bsAjO Allbirds says Steve Madden copied their sneakers. Gucci says Forever 21 ripped off their green-red-green stripes. Adidas says Zara knocked off their Yeezys. In the Constitution, Congress has the power to stop copying by giving authors and inventors “the exclusive right to their respective writings and discoveries.” But there’s a catch. These protections must “promote the progress” of creative industries. Conventional wisdom holds that copying kills innovation and hurts industry progress. But within the fashion industry, experts like New York University law professor Christopher Sprigman say the ease of copying is actually good for creativity.
