SQLAlchemy: Connecting to a database

03:10
Learn how to connect to your database: https://www.datacamp.com/courses/introduction-to-relational-databases-in-python In the python world, there are several great tools that we can use when working with databases. One of those is SQLAlchemy that we will be using throughout this course. SQLAlchemy will allow us to generate SQL queries by writing Python code. You should still consider learning how to write queries in SQL as well. SQLAlchemy has two main components. The part we will be focusing on is often referred to as "core" part of SQLAlchemy. It's really focused around the relational model of the database. Additionally, there is the Object Relational Model or ORM part of SQLAlchemy that is really focused around data models and classes that you as a programmer create. There are many different types of databases, and each database type has its own quirks and unique capabilities. You'll commonly find SQLite, PostgreSQL, MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server, and Oracle when working with data. SQLAlchemy provides a way to operate across all of these database types in a consistent manner. To connect to a database, we need a way to talk to it, and an engine provides that common interface. To create an engine, we import the create_engine function from sqlalchemy; we then use the create_engine function and supply it a connection string that provides the details needed to connect to a database. Finally once we have an engine, we are ready to make a connection using the connect method on the engine. It's worth noting that SQLAlchemy won't actually make the connection until we give it some work to execute. So to review, an engine is the common interface to the database, which requires a connection string to provide the details used to find and connect to the database. Before we go any further, let's talk a bit more about connection strings. In their simplest form, they tell us what kind of database we are talking to and how we should access it. In this example, you can see that we are using the sqlite database driver and the database file named census_nyc.sqlite which is in the current directory. Now that we have an engine and a connection, we need to know what tables are in the database. We'll start again by importing the create_engine function and creating an engine to our database. Finally, We can use the table_names method of the engine which returns a list of tables. Once we know what table we want to work on, we need a way to access that table with python. To do that we are going to use a handy process called reflection, which reads the database and builds a Table object that we can use in our code. We already have created our engine, so we begin by importing the MetaData and Table objects needed for reflection. The MetaData object is a catalog that stores database information such as tables so we don't have to keep looking them up. To reflect the table, we initialize a MetaData object. Next, we use the SQLAlchemy Table object and provide the table name we got earlier from the table_names method. We also supply our metadata instance, and then instruct it to autoload the table using the engine. Finally, we can use the function repr to view the details of our table that we stored as census. This allows us to see the names of the columns, such as 'state' and 'sex', along with their types, such as VARCHAR and INTEGER. This process of reflection may seem a bit of an overhead, but it will make understanding your databases and extracting information from them far easier downstream. Now it's your turn to practice writing connection strings, connecting to databases and reflecting tables. Then we'll be back here writing our first SQL queries.

Entity Relationship Diagram (ERD) Tutorial - Part 1

06:58
Learn how to create an Entity Relationship Diagram in this tutorial. We provide a basic overview of ERDs and then gives step-by-step training on how to make an ER diagram with correct cardinality. Entity Relationship Diagrams are comprised of 3 main categories: entities, attributes, and relationships. Entities are objects or concepts that are associated with important data—like a customer, order, or product. Attributes represent properties or traits of an entity, such as a customer’s phone number or home address. Relationships demonstrate the link between entities. Another main aspect of of ERD's is cardinality, which further defines the relationship between entities in a numerical way. Certain symbols signify the minimum and maximum relationship between different entities. How to Find Object ( Table.View,Stored Procedure,Function etc.) in All the Database in SQL Server - TSQL Tutorial / SQL Server Tutorial On daily basis we come across different questions and scenarios as Database developers and DBAs. Sometime users just stop by and they ask us questions and tell us that they have a table in one of the database and if we can take a look for them. When we try to find out the table, we don't see the table. The table might be in different Database and user is not providing correct information. The below script can be used to find out any object on Entire SQL Server Instance. you can use this script To find a Table in all the Databases on SQL Server Instance To find a Stored Procedure in All the Databases on SQL Server Instance To find a view on entire SQL Server Instance To find a function in any database on SQL Server Instance. In short any object can be found by using below script. You only have to provide the name of object and it will return you information with Database Name, Schema Name, Object Name, Type and Type Description. The below code is also one of the example where we need to change the database name in our query and we can use Dynamic SQL to perform that. How To Check If Column Exists for a Table Or View in Database in SQL Server - SQL Server Tutorial

03:10
On daily basis, we come across this scenario when we have to find out if a column exists for a Table or View in Database. Specially if we are debugging SQL Server Reports/An application, we take a column name or part of it and want to know that from which table this column is used. We can query INFORMATION_SCHEMA.COLUMNS view to get this information. blog post link for scripts used in this video http://sqlage.blogspot.com/2014/01/tsql-how-to-check-if-column-exists-for.html

Welcome back to another tutorial on Java JDBC. In this video we're going to learn how to read and write BLOBs. For this tutorial we're going to use the employees table. I have a SQL script that will create the table and add sample data for you. You can download it from the link below. The file is sql/table-setup.sql. Time - 00:28 So what exactly is a BLOB? Well a BLOB is basically binary data that we store in the database. You normally use BLOBs to keep track of documents, images, audio, or any other binary object that you have. Note that not all databases have support for BLOBs. In this example we’re going to make use of MySQL and they have BLOB support. Time - 00:48 On this slide we will learn how to create a BLOB column. So when we create a table in MySQL we add a column with the BLOB data type. On this slide I want to learn how to write a BLOB to a database. For this example I'm going to add a resume for an employee. I'm going to read a local PDF file and I'll take that file and update the database with the binary data that's the actual content of PDF file. Let's walk through the code. Time - 01:17 At the beginning I’ll set up a SQL statement. I’ll say update employees set resume equals to question mark where the email address equals [email protected] We’re only going to make a change for this John Doe employee, set up a prepared statement, and then I go, we’re going to create a file that's an actual handle to the local file sample_resume.pdf. Then I’ll set, on my statement I’ll set the binary stream, that first parameter for the resume comma the input. That's the input stream I have for that file. Then I actually call my statement .executeUpdate. That will actually update the database with the binary data. Time - 01:54 All right so let's switch over to Eclipse and let’s look at a very simple demo. I have a program called WriteBlobDemo. In this program we're going to actually read a resume from a local file system and write it as a BLOB to the database. I’ll walk through the code here. The first thing we do is we get a connection to the database. We prepare a statement. We're going to update employees, set resume equals to question mark where email equals [email protected] So we’re going to update the resume for John Doe. Time - 02:22 Then I’ll move down, I’ll set up a file handle for this file sample_resume.pdf. I’ll set up an input stream on that file and then I’ll set that as the parameter for our binary stream for our prepared statement. Then I’ll move through and I’ll actually do an execute update. This will actually store this binary file from the file system into the actual database column. Time - 02:47 I just ran the application and here's the output of the program. So beginning it says that it’s reading the file and gives me the full path to the file just for sanity sake, I know which file is actually reading. Then it tells me that it's storing the resume in the database for our employee [email protected] and then it says that it completed successfully. Excellent. Time - 03:10 Now let's move over to MySQL tool and verify this. I'll take a look at the employees there in the database right now. l’ll run this query select * from employees and I'll get a list of the actual employees. Notice here for John Doe there’s an entry here for a resume, there's a BLOB entry. Note all the other entries are null. So we have a BLOB entry here. I can select this entry. I can right click. I can say, “Open Value in Editor” and it’s going to show me this BLOB. Again, it's a binary large object so we see all this binary data. Actually it should be displayed as hex. Time - 03:50 Instead of looking at it in this fashion there's a tab here called “Image.” I can select this tab and now it'll actually show me this image or the actual data as a PDF that I can view. This is the actual PDF document for this employee, John Doe. This looks really good. We know that we were successful in storing the BLOB in the actual database. Time - 04:18 Now that we know how to write BLOBs in the database let's learn how to read a BLOB from the database. In this example I'm going to read the employee’s resume from the database as a BLOB and then store it as a file on my local files system. Let's walk through the code. [snip] .... see the Transcripts tab for details.
