A Day in the Life of a Production Assistant

12:19
If you're planning on working your way up into the film industry, PAing is a rite of passage. Production Assistants (P.A.'s) are often overlooked, but are a crucial part of any production. They work as a team, have their eyes on everything, facilitate communication across the entire set, and keep everything running smoothly. On the set of RocketJump: The Show, we gave production assistant Colin West McDonald a go pro and followed him as he went about his day on the short "Tip Jar." Learn about set protocol and lingo, what exactly is said on all the walkies, lock ups, what a "last man" is, and general production assistant duties... as well as what to do to guarantee you'll get hired again! Questions about PAing? Ask us directly in our forums: http://j.mp/DayLifePADiscussion Big thanks to Colin West McDonald for sitting down with us, sharing his knowledge, and for wearing a camera on his head all day. Also, a million thanks to Nathan Koepp, story producer and shooter/editor for RocketJump: The Show, and Armeen Monahan and Allen Chodakowski, camera operators for the show, for giving us such amazing footage. Chris Painter gave an overview of what it's like to be a product manager and talked about our part-time product management course curriculum. He also shared secrets on what it takes to become a Product Manager and answered various questions about product management. Chris Painter has spent the past 20 years developing, managing, and launching at scale unique hardware and software experiences in both Japan and the US. He started his career in Japan, joining the team that designed the ThinkPad laptops. He eventually found his way to Sony Japan doing product design on the VAIO laptops. It was at Sony where he was able to get his start in product management and his passion for bringing together hardware and software experiences. He brought that to his own startup which focused on building an online streaming media experience. Though not hugely successful, this ultimately helped to create new experiences at Comcast that became the new Xfinity X1 UI, and ultimately the very successful Amazon FireTV and FireTV stick product experiences. He carried his personal passion for photo and video capture to GoPro where he led a team of product managers developing new ways to capture, manage and share your life’s most memorable moments. Bitten once again by the startup bug, Chris now heads up product at a robotics startup focused on last mile delivery. Production manager at Shakespeare's Globe, Wills #181

02:51
Wills is the production manager at Shakespeare's Globe theatre. Scenery is more important now than 400 years ago, he explains. Through Wills work we enter Shakespeare's world. Wills is one out of five Londoners in the Shakespeare In London season, as part of Shakespeare400. 1000 LONDONERS This film is part of 1000 Londoners, a five-year digital project which aims to create a digital portrait of a city through 1000 of the people who identify themselves with it. The profile contains a 3 minute film that gives an insight into the life of the Londoner, as well as their personal photos of London and some answers to crucial questions about their views on London life. Over the course of the project we aim to reveal as many facets of the capital as possible, seeing city life from 1000 points of view. www.1000londoners.com www.youtube.com/1000londoners www.facebook.com/1000londoners Twitter: @1000_londoners 1000 Londoners is produced by South London based film production company and social enterprise, Chocolate Films. The filmmakers from Chocolate Films will be both producing the films and providing opportunities to young people and community groups to make their own short documentaries, which will contribute to the 1000 films. Visit www.chocolatefilms.com TRANSCRIPT I'm the production manager at the Globe. Part of that job is to sort of design how all the scenery and that stuff goes together. And when the designer and the director come to me in early stages before rehearsal starts. With al little computer model of what they want. Our first thing to do is to try and work out how to make that twenty-five bigger. And do it in a way that we can turn it around every day. And do it so that it is safe and it doesn't fall down on people when they're rehearsing or playing. We use designers a bit more than I feel they would have done 400 years ago. I think they would have just turned up with a text and some costumes and a couple of goblets and some swords. And done the shows. Do you know what I mean? I don't think they would have built a load of truss and smoke machines and huge fans and lighting and stuff like that. I don't get stressed in the lead up to it. But more often if you're watching the first few performances, and there's a particularly technical moment. If you've got an actor flying in through the trap door for example, on a winch. It's kind of out of your hands by then a little bit by then. Then I do spend a lot of time with my fingers crossed. So, we have just taken down this morning a production of Imogen. Which is in technical rehearsals. And this afternoon there's a matinee performance of Macbeth. And that's what's going on right now. It's great working here. It's a beautiful place to work. There's something about being next to the river. And there's something about the architecture of that building. I've worked in many theatres and a lot of the time you get locked up in the dark. And here it's… Well as you can see today, it's a nice day so we get a bit of sunshine and fresh air. And I think that keeps people in a good mood. I do feel like the building and the people that I work with as well are more important than the literature. I do feel more connected to the building. Because it's nature you know. The fact that it's got a thatched roof and it's all timber. It's much easier to relate to I think as a piece of architecture. I mean it feels a bit more, I wanna say organic but that sounds rubbish, but I kinda mean it's closer to us. Because it's hand made materials and stuff like that. It's tangible. And it feels much more personal than it would if I was putting a Rawlplug in a piece of concrete. My kids do think it's the coolest job ever. Whenever I bring them here I can't drag them away. They are sort of in tears when I try to get them out of the building. 'Cause they think that I'm famous because I work at the Globe. So, whenever they come here they're straight on the stage. Doing cartwheels and stuff like that.

Can Disney Product Managers Solve Their Sports Problem?

02:42
For more information on Blue Elephant Consulting and product management, go to: www.BlueElephantConsulting.com Disney is a very large, very successful company. The company is made up of many different parts: consumer products, theme parks, film studios, and media networks. Many parts of the company are doing very well right now, but other parts are not. One of the parts that seems to be struggling is the ESPN sports network. In fact, this part of the company has been doing so poorly lately that it has driven the company’s stock value down by 24%. Clearly the Disney product managers are going to have to take steps to change their product development definition and deal with this problem. For more information on how to become a better product manager, check out my blog The Accidental Product Manager at http://theaccidentalpm.com
