That said, choosing the best dumbbell exercises ever can be quite a challenge since there are so many to choose from. In this video, I picked the 8 best exercises with dumbbells and give you a reason why each has earned its spot. To begin, lets take a look at the best dumbbell exercises. They are: Dumbbell Curl and Press Crush Grip Goblet Squats Thrusters Farmers Carries One Arm DB Incline Bench Press DB Pullovers Swings Tripod Dumbbell Rows Each of these exercises require either just a single dumbbell or two dumbbells. They were chosen given their ability to work multiple muscle groups in one dumbbell only workout. The more muscles you can train in one workout the quicker your training session will be and the more impact you can have on your body in a shorter period of time. Dumbbell only workouts can be incredibly challenging. In fact, some people think that you can’t effectively train your legs with db’s since you aren’t able to load up the weight high enough. That’s not true at all. You can choose exercises that you load with even 100lb dumbbells and perform on a single leg and you are sure to be pushing yourself to your limits. The same can be said for dumbbell chest workouts and dumbbell back and arm workouts. The fact that you aren’t using a barbell does not sacrifice the quality or effectiveness of the training session. That said, you cannot continue to lift light dumbbells and think that you are going to get a great enough workout. Even if you are training at home, aim to lift the heaviest dumbbells that you can lift if you want to build muscle in your workouts. All you need is two dumbbells and a plan! I put together four complexes, each using nothing more than a pair of dumbbells and your body. Each complex will challenge you in a unique way. Complexes are great because they force you to complete a high-volume workout in a short amount of time. The key is to hang on to the weight until you've completed all the movements. No rest until you've finished a round! Once you've completed the warm-up, grab a set of dumbbells, and get your mind and some weights ready. The first time you do the routine, just work through each complex as best as you can, and don't worry if it feels a bit awkward or the weights you have aren't ideal. If you have more than one pair of dumbbells available, you'll probably want increase or decrease the weight depending on the complex. In general, use as much weight as you can, but don't go so heavy you can't move well. This rapid-fire follow-along home workout is a great way to learn a top-notch movement, giving all types of lifters a chance to test their strength and fitness. ►Total-Body Dumbbell Fix Program: http://bbcom.me/2FV61bd ► Shop Bodybuilding Signature Supplements: http://bbcom.me/2FV4YYL As with the other workouts in The Total-Body Dumbbell Fix, you won't focus on hitting specific sets and reps as you practice these movements. Go at your own pace and complete as many reps as possible. If you find yourself struggling to learn a particular movement, pause the video and work at your own pace until you feel confident in your form. Exercise intervals last 35-45 seconds, with 15-30 seconds of rest in between. Listen for the tone as you follow along with the video to let you know when the time is almost up. If you choose not to follow the video, you can increase or decrease the interval and rest times to adjust the intensity of the workout. Light to medium weight is best for this workout; heavier dumbbells will build strength and hypertrophy, while lighter dumbbells benefit aerobic performance and athletic endurance. The last two minutes will be a burner at any weight! Perform these first four exercises in a circuit, with about a minute of rest in between each full round. The man-maker is not part of this circuit because it is your final fitness test at the end of the workout. If not, then you could be missing out on a great way to etch in those deeper, more chiseled looking abs by not training your abdominals with enough resistance. Weighted ab workouts, like this one with dumbbells, can provide a great way to overload your abs and help get you out of the core training rut you might find yourself right now. To perform this ab workout, you will need a couple of sets of dumbbells. Start with a set that will be challenging for you to complete the ten reps required of you in each exercise, without it being too heavy that you cannot perform the moves in good form. Once you have identified this weight, drop down by five pounds each time and choose 3 more sets of dumbbells. You should have a total of 4 pairs of weights. Note, if your starting weight is such that you cannot select four pairs of dumbbells that is ok. You can complete your final sets using just your bodyweight. To begin, sit down and grab the heaviest pair of dumbbells. Perform a weighted Russian Twist with both dumbbells crossing over to one side and then the other. The key is to keep your abs tight and your core engaged to prevent overrotation or uncontrolled rotation. This is one of the most important functions of the abs and one that is sure to be tested by this first exercise. Complete 10 reps to each side and immediately move onto the next exercise in the workout. Next is the weighted Otis Up. In this ab exercise, you will lie flat on your back with the dumbbells extended overhead as if doing a bench press. In one move, you will sit up and keep the weights directed at the ceiling the entire time. Once you reach the full sit-up, slowly lower yourself back down to the floor with your abs eccentrically contracting to control the descent. Perform 10 reps of this move and proceed immediately to the next exercise in the workout. Next up is the single arm dumbbell rollout. This is a great exercise that challenges your abs eccentrically once again. Rest on one forearm and hold the dumbbell with the opposite hand. Roll the dumbbell away from you as you work to keep your abs tight and engaged the whole way out. Perform ten reps on each arm and proceed to the final exercise in this ab workout. Finally, wrap up this ab workout with dumbbells by getting into position to perform a one arm renegade row. In the pushup position and with a dumbbell in each hand, row each arm ten times making sure not to over rotate your torso as you pull the weight up. Perform on both sides. This is just the first round of this brutal ab workout however. From here, keep your rest to a minimum and grab the next set of dumbbells in line and repeat. This is an awesome routine that you can do either at the gym or in your home! These 4 exercises will ensure every head of your deltoid muscle is fully trained, to grow the muscle as quickly and effectively a possible. We’ll begin this workout with a compound pressing movement. For this specific workout, we’ll start with a Standing Military Press for 3 sets of 5-8 repetitions. The purpose of this exercise is to overload the muscles with a heavier load (hence the low 5-8 repetitions). Press heavy and maintain good form. Directly after, we’ll be moving into some targeting of the anterior head of our deltoids. We’ll be performing the standing Neutral Grip Front Raise for 3 sets of 12 reps to target this head. Maintain control of the weight, and never incorporate use of assistive muscles in your back. If you can’t prevent yourself from swinging the weight, or arching your back in order to get the weight up, then simply lower the weight. Bad form on this exercise is usually caused from using too heavy of a weight. To target our medial head, we’ll be utilizing the Seated Lateral Raise. The purpose of performing this exercise while seated is to assist in eliminating the role our back plays in helping lift the weight up. The back rest on the bench will be effective in preventing you from arching your back. Make sure to keep your middle and lower back planted on the bench the whole time too. Perform this exercise for 3 sets of 12 repetitions, ensuring you get the weight up just higher than your shoulders. To conclude our workout, we’ll be targeting an incredibly important head of our deltoids. This is the posterior head. A good portion of every guy’s deltoids are ridiculously underdeveloped. The results of an underdeveloped posterior head are plaguing shoulder injuries; the most common injury being rotator cuff damage. Preserve your shoulders, promote the longevity of your lifting career, and NEVER neglect the posterior head of your deltoid. We’ll be performing 3 sets of 15-20 reps for this exercise. A study was undertaken at The University Oklahoma and published in the Journal of Strength And Conditioning Research comparing the muscle gains of 24 college-aged guys (18-22) to 25 so-called middle-aged men (35-50). Both these groups followed the same weightlifting routine for eight weeks. It turns out that not only did the guys over 35 build just as much muscle, they actually had slightly greater gains. 8 Principles To Building The Ultimate Test Boosting Workout For Men Over 40 From this, I’ve created some guiding principles to developing the ultimate testosterone boosting workout. These include: 1. Make it a total body workout. You want to do three total body workouts per week, hitting the entire body every session. 2. Add resistance. This is key. If you don’t add some type of external weight, the chances of you boosting testosterone will be low. As great as I think bodyweight exercises can be at times, they are not ideal in this situation. 3. Move from exercise to exercise quickly. This will help you boost your metabolism so that you can burn more energy for up to 24 hours after the workout session is completed. 4. Use multi-joint and compound exercises. These are the moves that will work the greatest number of muscles at once and help you get in and out of the gym quickly. They’re also the best exercises for helping you gain larger amounts of strength as well. 5. Use Circuit Training Wisely. Use circuits, moving from one exercise to the next so that your workouts never last longer than 20-30 minutes in length. You should never be resting more than one minute between sets during a given workout. 6. Keep equipment to a minimum. There’s no need for fancy machines. All you need is a simple set of dumbbells to get the job done correctly. 7. Allow for 48 hours of rest between each workout. Remember that your body doesn’t recover as well as it used to so leave that extra time for recovery. This will ensure that you are never verging on overtraining – and a decrease in testosterone. On these rest days, feel free to add yoga or another low impact activity. 8. Vary your exercises. Keep things interesting by changing your exercises around from week to week. Not only will this prevent workout related boredom, but it’ll also ensure that your body keeps responding to the work that you are doing. Incorporating any of these five dumbbell exercises into your current routine is a great way to not only switch up your bicep workout, but to maximize your muscle engagement for more growth and strength. You can also choose to use these five exercises together as a bicep routine. Perform 4 sets of each exercise increasing the weight with each set. Follow the rep ranges of: 12 reps for set 1 10 reps for set 2 8 reps for set 3 6 reps for set 4 Alternating Dumbbell Curl This is a great isolation exercise to work the entire bicep. The focus here is to keep your palms facing forward and your elbows in front of your hips throughout the entire movement. As you curl each arm keep your shoulder blades retracted and squeeze the dumbbell as hard as you can to force an even harder bicep contraction. Bring the dumbbell all the way up to your chest and control the decent never letting your elbow go pass your hip. Fully extend your arm at the bottom of the movement and do not begin to alternate sides until your arm is fully extended. The reason being is because you want to put as much focus as possible into isolating each bicep for maximum muscle engagement. Dumbbell Drag Curl The dumbbell drag curl is a great exercise to work on the peak of your bicep. To perform this exercise you’re going to once again begin with your palms facing forward. While maintaining a tight core, bring the dumbbells up to your armpits while pushing your elbows back as far as you can. Flex and squeeze your biceps as hard as you can while you curl and as you lower the dumbbells make sure you still focus on pushing your elbows back. You’ll notice that to perform this movement correctly you’ll need to use lighter weight. Hammer Curl The hammer curl is a great exercise to target the entire bicep, but you’ll be putting a lot more emphasis on your brachioradialis. This is the muscle runs from your wrist, across the inside portion of your elbow and into your upper arm. You’ll be using the same form to perform this exercise as you did with the Alternating Dumbbell Curl, however the only difference is that you’ll be keeping your palms facing in throughout the entire movement and lifting both arms at the same time. So let’s recap. Keep your core tight, shoulder blades retracted, elbows in front of your hips and be sure to bring the dumbbells all the way up to your shoulders and fully extend your arms at the bottom of each repetition. Zottman Curl If you’re looking for an exercise that will target a little bit of everything, the Zottman Curl is number one. You’ll work the primary movers for a traditional bicep curl on the way up (the biceps and brachialis) and you’ll target the main muscles for the reverse curl on the way down which includes the brachioradialis, a muscle we just talked about in the Hammer Curl. To perform the movement, begin with the dumbbells by your side with your palms facing in. As you curl the dumbbells begin to twist your wrists so that your palms face your shoulders at the top of the movement. Once you reach the top of the movement, turn your palms so they face out. Then slowly return to the starting position and repeat. Once again focus on keeping your core tight, shoulder blades back, elbows in front of your hips and perform the full range of motion with each repetition. Dumbbell Concentration Curl The last exercise is the dumbbell concentration curl. It's time to get Bigger, Wider Shoulders - http://athleanx.com/x/biggerwidershoulders Did you know that bigger, wider shoulders is one of the muscle groups listed at the top of the list when Men's Health Magazine polled women to see what turned them on the most in guys? Shocked me. I thought abs, and arms would easily top those...but they didn't. The reason why is because a set of powerful explosive shoulders frames your entire physique and lets people know that you're in shape and strong without having to say a word. All that said, the problem that most guys face when trying to get big shoulders is that they feel as if the only way to get them is by doing countless reps of heavy military presses. This isn't the only way. In fact, using one of the most popular shoulder exercises but also one of the most incorrectly performed, you can start adding size to your shoulders in as little as 14 days! The ability to get bigger shoulders and add muscle mass to your shoulders in 14 days comes from the principle of muscle overload. By incorporating the cheat side lateral exercise you can add significant weight to the exercise and as a result, size to your shoulders much more quickly. The trick is to not swing the weight up, but make sure that you muscle it up. From the top of the movement, you want to be sure that you slowly lower the weight down, concentrating on the eccentric part of the exercise to ensure that the deltoid is getting the brunt of the work. Continue to perform as many reps as you can until failure and incorporate this technique into your shoulder workout each time you perform it. You actually can see a difference in your shoulder size after even just one of these workouts. Not from actual shoulder muscle growth but more from the lingering pump that you will experience (not very common when doing shoulder workouts!) by training the muscles the right way. In this episode I want to show you a KILLER home chest workout you can do at home in just a few minutes. It's a great way to build a muscular chest -- and all you'll need is a couple of dumbbells to do it. The way it works is by using different chest exercises to hit your chest in different ways, one right after another. I designed this workout to really burn your chest out fast, and you're really going to be feeling it in your pecs after this workout. Here's how it's done. CLOSE GRIP DUMBBELL PRESS PULLOVER - 10 REPS. Hold the dumbbells close together (touching each other) and bring them down to your chest. Press them upwards, and then bring them behind your head for the pullover. Bring the dumbbells down as far as you can, and then pull them back up focusing on contracting your chest muscles during this movement. DUMBBELL CHEST PRESS - 10 REPS. Just like bench press, except with dumbbells. Use a heavier weight than the first exercise. Since this is a drop-set, be especially careful not to bring the weights down too far -- you shouldn't feel a "stretch" in your chest muscles. Most people should go down to about 90 degrees, but advanced guys who are more flexible PUSHUPS - 10 REPS. By this time your chest will be burnt, but make sure you stay at it. Do your pushups as normal, because this is your second drop-set. Again make sure your form is on point even when you're really tired. For a full chest workout, do this 7-8 times. Take 60-90 seconds rest between sets. And that's it! Maximum "work" and results in your chest and minimum time...which is what I'm all about.
