Dolce & Gabbana is an Italian luxury fashion house founded in 1985 in Legnano by Italian designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana. The two met in Milan in 1980 and designed for the same fashion house. In 1982, they established a designer consulting studio; in time it grew to become "Dolce & Gabbana". They presented their first women's collection in 1985 in Milan, where a year later their store would open its doors. In 1988, they launched a leotard line, and in 1989 they began designing underwear and swimming costumes. Dolce & Gabbana started to export their products to Japan and other countries including the United States, where they founded their own showroom in 1990. In 1992, the same year they presented their men's collection, they also launched their first perfume Dolce & Gabbana. They won the Woolmark award in 1991, and Perfume's Academy "Most Feminine Flavor of the Year" in 1993 for their fragrance Dolce & Gabbana Parfum. By the end of the 1990s, the company's revenues were around US$500 million and in 2003 their revenue reached $633 million. By 2005, their turnover was €600 million. The designers behind the high-end fashion power house Dolce & Gabbana have declared their brand will die with them, rather than be passed on to emerging talent or family members.'Once we're dead, we're dead.I don't want a Japanese designer to start designing Dolce & Gabbana,', founder Domenico Dolce told Italy's Corriere della Sera.Along with former partner Stefano Gabbana - they split in 2005 - the veteran fashionistas have rejected numerous takeover bids since the brand was founded in 1985, and continue to work extremely closely together on projects.And the childless pair, who infamously rejected the notion of same sex families despite their sexuality, insist their company will not be passed on to any relatives, or sold to the highest bidder once they step down.Instead the brand will simply cease to exist.'One can have a lot of money but if you are not free, what do you do with it?' Dolce, 55, said.'When we split up, we said to ourselves that it was better to divide up everything, because if I took a blow to the head the next day he would have found himself dealing with someone not involved in the industry, like for example my cousin, who could ruin the business,' Gabbana, also 55, explained.'We have created a trust neither of us can touch.' The pair are riding high on a wave of long running critical and commercial acclaim, and recently saw their company turnover rise by nine per cent to $1.296 billion, with a new profit of nearly $100 million.However, they have been particularly outspoken on LGBT issues in the past, and provoked furor in 2015 when they said in an interview: 'We oppose gay adoptions.The only family is the traditional one.'No chemical offsprings and rented uterus: life has a natural flow, there are things that should not be changed.' The childless pair, who both have new partners, made it clear their brand would not be passed on to any relatives because procreation 'must be an act of love', but neither were able to love a woman.Dolce said in the interview with Italy's Panorama magazine: 'You are born to a mother and a father – or at least that's how it should be.Gabbana added: 'The family is not a fad.In it there is a supernatural sense of belonging.' Today we're going to take a closer look at how a young man from a war-torn country grew from poverty to becoming one of the top fashion designers in the world. This is the story of preeminent fashion designer Giorgio Armani and the top 3 lessons that you can learn from his success. "Remain true to yourself and your philosophy. Changing in the face of adversity will in fact diminish your credibility with your customers." - Giorgio Armani Giorgio Armani (born July 11, 1934) grew up in the small northern Italian town of Piacenza. Armani grew up in a family of five that was hard working, but never had too much money to go around. His childhood was not an easy one. The realities of the Second World War in which Italy was caught at the time, were all too apparent to the young Armani. After losing two young friends to a war bomb, Armani and his sister also became the target of machine gun fire from an overhead plane. However, Armani and his family survived the War and relocated to Milan. It was a city decidedly marked by class division, and one in which Armani's parents struggled to rebuild their lives. They found it hard to find their footing in this much bigger and tougher city than their little town of Piacenza. And so, he enrolled in the medical school at the University of Bologna, where he studied for two years to become a doctor. However, when he discovered that the sight of blood made him weak, Armani knew that line of work was not for him. In 1953, Armani was called to fulfill his military obligations, which he accepted eagerly as a chance to clear his head and gain new direction in his life. For all of his experience, Armani was assigned to the infirmary. However, he quickly grew bored with his prospects and realized that war life was not the romantic notion he had seen in the movies. He took a short break from the service and took a trip to Milan that would forever change his life. That was where he met a friend of his who happened to work at La Rinascente, Milan's largest department store, and who would give him his first break into the fashion industry. After the meeting, Armani said he had become a believer in destiny. That destiny has made him known for his classically tailored, sleek power suits and clean, high quality fabrics that everyone from the who's who of Hollywood to the bankers on Wall Street have fallen in love with. Now, Giorgio Armani S.p.A. has over $1.5 billion in revenue and a retail empire that extends to more than 35 countries. He has been clothing her since she first wore one of his pieces in 2008 at the Olympic Games in Beijing. He spoke to Vogue magazine about designing her wedding gown and believes Princess Charlene "knows how to wear my creations with nonchalance and confidence of youth." Getting to the point where royalty requests a specific designers clothing is considered the pinnacle of a designer's career, but Armani continues to challenge the market and re-invent his designs, which was shown in his design for Princess Charlene's wedding dress. According to Armani, "I felt the new design was appropriate given that there would inevitably be comparisons with Princess Grace, and though such comparisons are of course a sign of admiration, each person has their own individual and unique style, and style is an expression of the times." Fashion designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana were sentenced to one year and six months each in jail on Wednesday, over charges of hiding hundreds of millions of euros from Italian tax authorities. Full story: Fashion designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana were each given a reduced, suspended sentence of 18 months in jail on Wednesday for a conviction on charges of hiding hundreds of millions of euros from Italian tax authorities. Italy's appeals court upheld a verdict issued last June against the pair, who are as famous as the stars they dress, on charges of using Luxembourg holding company Gado to avoid paying taxes on royalties of about 1 billion euros ($1.38 billion). The sentence was reduced from 20 months because the statute of limitations applied to certain facts in the case. A lawyer for Dolce and Gabbana, who have always denied any wrongdoing, said they would appeal the decision. "I am speechless. We are all shocked. The judgement is inexplicable and we will appeal," Massimo Dinoia said after the judgement. A Milan prosecutor had asked the court in March to clear the pair, who - in a protest last year at being "pilloried" - closed the Milan shops where they sell clothes and accessories inspired by Dolce's native Sicily. The previous decision, by a lower court, handed the duo suspended jail sentences of 20 months each and imposed a fine of up to 10 million euros over avoidance of the payments in Italy, where corporate taxes are among the highest in Europe. The case stems from an investigation that began in 2008 when Italian tax authorities stepped up their fight against tax evasion as a global financial crisis began to bite. Fashion companies have fallen under the scrutiny of Italy's tax authorities partly due to the fact the sector has performed well during the country's longest recession since World War Two. "Luxury is one of the few sectors to have done well in recent years," said a partner specialising in tax at Grant Thornton in Milan who declined to be named. "It is easier to go and ask for money where there is money as opposed to going to a troubled sector." The cases rarely come to court, however. Giorgio Armani paid 270 million euros to tax authorities in early April to settle a dispute over payments from the group's subsidiaries abroad. Prada Holding, which controls Prada, paid a reported 400-420 million euros to settle taxes in Italy after completing a process of voluntary disclosure in December. MILAN — Many hours before Price Waterhouse Coopers was busily shuffling envelopes nine time zones away in Los Angeles, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana were putting in finishing touches to make sure their story came out a winner. And did it ever! The Dolce & Gabbana Fall / Winter 2017 runway show Sunday afternoon all but abandoned a traditional model casting and instead went straight for its front rows, which the brand has methodically cultivated over the years making it the beloved brand it is today. They are not without their critics, but what can be said about the designers is their commitment to making anyone who wears their clothes feel just as extravagant. The show itself included over 120 looks, which were worn on the runway by a cast of models, musicians, celebrities, and their progeny, all of whom defied any semblance of a typical high fashion casting in which the wearer is subordinate to the worn. This show was all about its cast, and let it not be understated, the legions of followers they brought to the occasion. Next Management alone contributed nearly 20 names to the roster, drawn from across its global network of friends and family including Negin Mirsalehi, Grace Elizabeth, Shea Marie, Leila Goldkuhl, Daisy Clementine, Pyper America, Starlie Cheyenne, Lucky Blue, Stormi Bree, Maria Clara, Lorena Maraschi, Helena Bordon, Kristina Bazan, Harley Viera Newton, Dylan Jagger Lee, Alice Dellal, Andrea Dellal, and Charlotte Olympia. A simple back of envelope calculation puts their combined audiences on Instagram alone at nearly 10 million.
