Understanding And Resolving Oracle Free Buffer Wait Contention - Seminar Intro
This is the introduction to my video seminar, Understanding And Resolving Oracle Free Buffer Wait Contention. Free buffer waits is one of the most feared of all Oracle wait events. It requires just the right workload mix and configuration to appear. When it does appear, it affects the entire application. As Oracle DBAs, our job is to regain control of the situation and restore application performance. But it is complicated and making the wrong move can make the situation even worse! So, how do you quickly improve performance with a clear understanding of the situation? That's the focus of this seminar. This seminar is designed to take you on a journey. The journey starts with Craig clearly explaining what a free buffer wait is. Then he delves into Oracle's buffer cache, focusing on the least recently used (LRU) lists and the associated algorithms. Craig even role plays as an Oracle foreground process and an Oracle buffer header, locking the details into your brain. Now the details brought together making the cause and effect clear so the presented solutions make perfect sense! Taking it further, two solutions are implemented and the results analyzed. Join Oracle ACE Director Craig Shallahamer as he take you on an unforgettable journey into the Oracle buffer cache zeroing in on understanding and resolving Oracle free buffer waits. Understanding And Resolving Oracle CBC Wait/Latch Contention - Introduction
Understanding And Resolving Oracle CBC Wait/Latch Contention When a server process needs to access a buffer it must access the cache buffer chain (CBC) structure to determine if the buffer is already in the buffer cache. With just the right workload mix, performance can be a problem. Learning about the relevant Oracle internals and how to diagnose and solve CBC performance problems is what this seminar is all about. Professional Business Coaching: Free, Buffer and Focus
see more at: www.MLJinternational.com Have you noticed my colour selection here? They gave me the colours, but anyway. So this is people, don't we all want free days? And focus, and it's green of course and the buffer. Now I've been saying free focus and buffer for a long time because I studied Dan Sullivan's stuff and it's brilliant and all that stuff. But I'm going to say free buffer and focus. Put your free days in first, because if you don't you'll never get them, right? There's always lots to do, because as I say we stretch the work out to fit the time. So put your free days in first, how many vacations would you like to take? It takes three weeks to totally recharge. Now I recommend, okay, one three week and then either one one-week and two two-weeks or two one-weeks and one two-week or something like that. But I recommend one three-weeks, you don't have to do it this year, but I do encourage you to get into that. It takes three weeks to fully recharge, then get away seasonally after that like every 90 days, and going to a trade show. You're still doing business but you're getting away, but that's what I'll say to people who are like, come on, I've only ever taken one one-week vacation, some people haven't even. Some people haven't even taken one one-week vacation. So there are four holidays right there, and you book them in, now that's your homework. Exactly which days where you're going, make a commitment, buy a ticket, I mean buy your flight. You can always rent a hotel room and cancel that within 48 hours, right? If you didn't show up and I want to tell these hotel rooms to get tighter on that, maybe a two week cancellation policy, but still people put it in their agenda and cancel that. I mean I know that, I do that, because I’ll say, you know I want to go to that, maybe it's not a priority, by the time comes for the conference or something like that would be fun, but it's not a priority, right? But if it's vacation, that's the priority. So you need to make some kind of commitment that's going to cost your money to cancel. Pick your dates, strike them right out, they're in your calendar, fill them up, gone to wherever. Then your buffer time, how much time do you need of buffer time? So what happens in buffer time? It's things that don't happen all the time. Okay, so it might be recruiting. You might not be hiring too many people regularly, bigger companies they have time in there every single week for recruiting, because they're constantly bringing on more people. And when you've got 60 people to bring on one more person is nothing. And when you get bigger jobs, you need to bring on like 5 or 10 more people constantly to work through these jobs, because you bring them on and they might not make it through the three months. So don't hesitate to bring two people on at the same time and see which one makes it through the three months and which one doesn't. So recruiting is something, with a smaller company, that may want to put into your buffer time. Cleaning your environment, that's huge. It's huge for most companies, you're up leveling yourself, you want an up-leveled environment. So a lot of people move into a new building, they'll buy their building (that's their retirement), and they'll buy the building and be moving into that, so that then doesn't become buffer, that goes into the focus time, because that's all about making more money when you get into this new environment, this new building and you're going to be will be growing and all that stuff, right? It’s in the focus. But the buffer time is something that doesn't happen all the time, could be as I say cleaning up your environment, putting up some shelves, getting those books organized and all that sort of thing. So how much buffer time do you need? That's a personal thing, and it may be that you need more later and it maybe that you need less later, you just need to be cleaning out the old cobwebs for a while, and you need less time later. So identify what you need. I contend that one day a month is probably good, but you may want to break that down to four mornings a month or two half days or something like that, okay? Now the rest of the time is focus time. And what's focus for you? Focus for you is not the same focus for your team. Your team focus is in the business, some of yours is in the business, a lot of it is on the business. Sales for example is huge. For any business needing money sales is number one for the entrepreneur. "Professional Business Coaching" "Professional Coaching" "business coaching" "Coaching (profession)"

How to tell if an Oracle parse issue is caused by similar yet unique SQL statements
The video is associated with Craig's 14-Mar-2017 blog post entitled, How Tell If Similar SQL Statements Are Causing Parsing Issues. In Part 1, we knew similar statements was the problem because I was the one subjecting the system with the similar statements! Hopefully no one is doing this in your production system! I will show you three similar SQL problem clues. The first clue is a performance ratio, the second are wait events and the third is creatively using the force matching signature. What are these clues and how do we effectively use them? That's the focus of this post... and the video! http://blog.orapub.com/20170314/how-to-tell-if-similar-sql-statements-are-causing-parsing-issues.html OraPub is a one-stop location for specialized training in Oracle database performance tuning, designed to help database managers get the answers and skills they need through engaging training and useful resources. Oracle: How To Optimize Performance When The Top Event Is DB CPU - Webinar
In this webinar Oracle Ace, Craig Shallahamer, will demonstrate how to do an Oracle time based analysis including integrating the OS situation into our analysis and finding the true “top” SQL. This journey includes a trip into Oracle’s library cache, memory access control and some interesting ways to improve SQL statement performance. Overall performance sucks as far as the users are concerned. After months of meetings management finally wants you to get involved. You run an AWR report for one of the most intense hours and notice the top “event” is "DB CPU" followed by "cursor: pin S wait on X”. This is where the webinar begins!

How To Use The Oracle SQL Net Message To Your Advantage - Introduction
How To Use The SQL*Net Message From Client Event To Your Advantage - webinar introduction. Idle wait events are usually ignored in our performance analysis. It's because they diminish what we should be focus on... most of the time. We need master the "not most of the time" as well. So, in this webinar I'm going to focus on the idle wait event, SQL*Net message from client. I'll show you what this wait event is, why it's important and not important, and how to use it to our advantage in both a time-based analysis and an ASH based analysis. And of course, you'll be able to download and immediately use any tools that I use. Using Skewed Oracle Performance Data To Your Advantage - Seminar Intro
Using Skewed Performance Data To Your Advantage is an important seminar for all DBAs because EVERY Oracle DBA has experienced the effects of skewed performance data, but most don't know how to use that knowledge to their advantage. Have you ever had different groups of users experience different response times from the same exact SQL? Has your IO Admin said the IO response time is fine, but you know single block IOs are taking around 25ms? If you have experienced something like this, then you have likely experienced skewed performance data. I designed this seminar so you will know exactly how to avoid this situation of skewed Oracle wait times and SQL elapsed times. I will teach you how to gather the appropriate data, understand the data and visually demonstrate the situation. This seminar is going to have a deep impact on your Oracle performance work. The skills I teach you will help you devise a sensible solution. Join me for a practical and entertaining journey as we explore the truth about elapsed times and wait events times, turning a potential disaster into your advantage. For details go to http://www.orapub.com/video-seminar-skewed-performance-data This contains eight modules: 1. Introduction: Revealing deception (this video) 2. Understanding your data 3. Common histograms in Oracle performance analysis 4. The problem: Skewed wait times 5. My advantage: Using the skewed wait times 6. The problem: Skewed elapsed times 7. My advantage: Using the skewed elapsed times 8. Resources and seminar close What you will learn: * Know what skewed data is * Be able to communicate why skewed data is a serious problem * Be able to recognize skewed data * Know how to gather individual wait event occurrence times, not average * Know six ways to gather individual SQL execution times, not average * Understand, demonstrate and communicate if skewed data is a problem * Recognize the five common statistical distributions * Be able to describe data using one picture and two statistics * Know histogram construction details * Know how to use the difference between the mean and median * Be able to install and use the free stats package, R * Be able to use the difference between the mean and median * Know how a histogram can cause faulty thinking * Understand why v$event_histogram deceives * Be able to use an AWR and Statspack report to recognize skewed data problems * Know how to create a proper SQL execution time histogram * Know how to create a proper wait event occurrence histogram For more information: http://www.orapub.com

Publishing Content Consistently With an Editorial Calendar - Side Projects #2
The best way to publish consistently is to make an editorial calendar. Cory Miller just launched his new side project: http://vlogology.com However, there's a catch: he hasn't actually completely finished his project! So why is he launching? He's decided to launch Vlogology with the lessons he's already finished writing and commit to publishing one new lesson per week moving forward. In other words, he's getting inside the weekly cycle like we talk about in Audience Building Course. However, what we also talk about in Audience Building Course is creating your editorial calendar and building up a buffer of content. What you don't want to do is wait until the last minute where you're scrambling to finish something the night before it's scheduled to be published! (This is where Cory is right now.) The solution is to get a buffer of content in place. For weekly content, I recommend having at least 4 weeks of finished content ready to go in the queue! An editorial calendar helps you plan out your content on a schedule. We talk about how to get ahead on your content and how to gradually build up a buffer --- 🔵 SHOW NOTES http://seanwes.tv/206 🔵 RESOURCES 👥 Free Course: http://AudienceBuildingCourse.com 📖 Overlap Book: http://OverlapBook.com ⭐️ Membership: https://seanwes.com/membership 🔵 WEBSITE http://seanwes.tv https://seanwes.com https://seanwes.com/podcast 🔵 SOCIAL https://twitter.com/seanwes https://facebook.com/seanwes https://instagram.com/seanwes 🔴 LISTEN TO SEANWES TV AS A PODCAST http://seanwes.tv/podcast

Tool to explore the relationship between total time and response time
Use this tool to visually explore the relationship between total time (think: big bar) and response time (think: time to process a logical IO) over a given interval (think: snapshot range). We know from hard-fought experience that the more work we push through a system the more processing time involved. That's not rocket science... but to mathematically represent the relationship between work and time is rocket science. Decades ago Operations Research queuing theory researchers quantitatively established the relationship between work and time. They put into math what we all have experienced. In our DBA world this means that as the system activity increases, then so does CPU consumption and eventually Oracle non-idle wait time. This tool allows you to visually see the relationship between work and time... plus a lot more. Yeah... it's pretty cool. The tool is completely free! Download Tool: Go to www.orapub.com and search for "time tool". Documentation: For details about how to use the tool, that is the documentation, please reference the related blog posting at http://shallahamer-orapub.blogspot.com and then search for "Total Time and Bits of Time".
