Why Fashion Designers Don't Dress Fashionably

04:52
Do you ever wonder why fashion designers don't dress very well? I explain, from a fashion designer's perspective, why I don't dress fashionably. Ask me a question! Or leave a comment below to explain why you DO or DON'T dress fashionably! Article Version is here: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/why-fashion-designers-dont-dress-well-emily-m-keller?trk=pulse_spock-articles Designers are figuring out 1 piece of the puzzle, where stylists are dealing with the big picture puzzle. I’m like many other fashion designers. I don’t dress particularly well or fashionably. Those of you out there that already know fashion designers don’t dress well, you’re ahead of most. Give me a second and let me help the others catch up and understand that lots of designers don’t dress fashionably. It’s a classic case of “The cobbler’s son has no shoes”, “There are only wooden spoons at the blacksmith’s house”, “The lady who sells fans fans herself with her hands”, “At the potter’s house water is served in a broken jug”, “The carpenter’s house always needs work, “The architect’s house is always crooked.” Why People think we dress well: -Stylists’ Confusion – We didn’t go to school to style outfits. We didn’t learn how to coordinate colors with shapes on different body types. We went to school to learn how to develop designs and how to execute them. I learned absolutely nothing about styling in my 4 years at FIT because my major wasn’t styling. Why We Don’t: 1. Workaholism – successful designers are obsessed with their work, therefore they tend to neglect all other aspects of their life. And dressing yourself is a completely different animal from dressing other people. And if I know I’m going to make no money off of dressing myself, then I would rather spend my time designing my clothing line. Time is money. Although, I do feel like this is changing with social media and each individual’s ‘personal brand’ is becoming more important. 2. Clothing Exhaustion – I design clothes all day for my target customer. The last thing I want to do when I get home is look at my own clothes and think about what to wear. 3. A designer isn’t usually their customer - Many designers’ target customer isn’t normally a category that they themselves fit into. This can be why you don’t see designers running around in their own pieces. It can be awkward to wear your own clothes if you know you’re not the type of person you’re designing it for. 4. Dressing Yourself Is Hard – Just as it’s easier to judge others actions and life choices, it’s also easier to know what others should be wearing. It’s hard to realistically judge your own character and therefore it’s also hard to dress yourself. Honestly, my boyfriend has a ton of say in what I wear. He is basically my personal stylist because I can’t figure out how to dress myself. Although I do sometimes ignore his strong opinions. 5. Simplifying life – This is a big trend right now. With all the minimalist living ideas popping up. But there are plenty of people who had this concept in mind before it became cool. Having a daily simplified ‘uniform’ saves time in one’s busy schedule. Think about it: if your whole closet was white button downs, blue jeans, and black sneakers, you would save so much time in the morning. Boom. Especially if you knew you looked good and felt confident in that ‘uniform’. Remember those days when the minute you left your house you regretted what you put on? You would never have a day like this ever again! You could predictably exude confidence. It’s lowering your risk of looking like an idiot. 6. We’re too cool. We’re basically just too cool to dress fashionably. Maybe it’s a bit of an elitist mentality. Everyone knows that fashion wannabes put a lot of effort into what they wear. Who are fashion wannabes you ask? They’re all the other fashion industry professions except for designers. This includes but is not limited to: stylists, buyers, merchandisers, bloggers … At FIT, the merchandise majors dressed up for class: heels, makeup, the works. The designers didn’t. Our work load was notoriously larger, so we didn’t have the time to pamper ourselves. Plus we had more crap to carry. You can’t wear heels while carrying a suitcase full of paper, fabric, scissors, and humongous rulers, without looking like an idiot. Dressing comfortably started as a necessity in school and wound up being a key differentiation between us and them as we transitioned into the working world. Too cool for school should really be too cool since school. What is fashion and what is style?men dressing style|men jeans style 2018 fashion boys style denham jeans Fashion is a popular style or practice, especially in clothing, footwear, accessories, makeup, body, or furniture. Fashion is a distinctive and often constant trend in the style in which a person dresses. It is the prevailing styles in behaviour and the newest creations of textile designers. What clothes were worn in the 1900's? In the early 1900s, people covered up more than we do today. Women and girls never wore trousers and women kept their legs hidden with long dresses or skirts. Men and boys often kept their coats, jackets and ties on, even in hot weather. People from every social class usually wore hats when they were What is the fashion for you? Fashion is about expressing your identity, showing someone who you are through your fashion choices and using your clothes to tell someone something about you. Or at least it is for me- I suppose for some people clothing is just about comfort or utility but for me it's about expressing mysel What is the difference between fashion and trends? Fads are novelty driven fashion choices. ... Trends have a much longer lifespan than fads. In fact, they can continue to be fashionable for years and even decades. The primary difference between a trend and a fad is that trends have the potential to be long-term influencers on the market What is the history of fashion? The modern industry, based around firms or fashion houses run by individual designers, started in the 19th century with Charles Frederick Worth who was the first designer to have his label sewn into the garments that he created. What is the definition of a fashion designer? Fashion design is the art of application of design and aesthetics or natural beauty to clothing and accessories. Fashion design is influenced by cultural and social attitudes, and has varied over time and place. What is the definition of style in fashion? What is the difference between fashion and style? What are the teddy girls? Dress? A dress (also known as a frock or a gown) is a garment consisting of a skirt with an attached bodice (or a matching bodice giving the effect of a one-piece garment).[1] It consists of a top piece that covers the torso and hangs down over the legs. A dress can be any one-piece garment containing a skirt of any length. Dresses can be formal or informal. In many cultures, dresses are more often worn by women and girls. The rise of fast fashion? The early to mid 2000s saw a significant rise in the consumption of fast fashion: affordable off-the-peg high street clothing based on the latest high fashion designs. With its low cost appeal driven by trends straight off the runway, fast fashion was a significant factor in the fashion industry’s growth. As affordable clothing became even more important in the entrance to the new age, brands had to find a way to keep up with their consumer’s new spending habits.[8] During the year 1999, department stores such as Macy’s, J.C. Penney, Kohl’s and more had sales totaling $230 billion. In the years that followed, that number began to fall. By the early 2000s the rise of online retail and in-store fast fashion caused department store sales to dwindle in sales in the wake of new styles being offered quicker than ever before by retailers.[9] Retail giants of the new millennium included H&M, Forever 21, and Zara. Notably, the retailer Target found major success in collaborating with various fashion designers for affordable designer pieces available for the average consumer.[10] This trend in fast fashion allowed shoppers to own designer items at lower prices, also allowing the acceptance and production of copycat styles.[11] Designers noticed their designs were being knocked-off, and decided to do something about it. In 2004, the retail giant H&M, a master in rolling out fast fashion, collaborated with fashion designer Karl Lagerfield to introduce a one-time collection which proved to be a huge success, as women flocked to H&M stores to own a piece of the designer’s 30 selections available in the collection. I live for fall TV premieres and winter award shows because of all the extra buzz around my favorite artists. And one of the best things about stalking your faves is seeing what they wear out!

The Frock Fashion Line Designs Stylish Clothes for Orthodox Jewish Women | New York Post

03:16
Two Orthodox sisters living in Brooklyn want to break the stigma associated with dressing modestly. Australian transplants Simi Polonsky and Chaya Chanin are the creators of a fashion label, The Frock NYC, which adheres to the dress code required in the Orthodox Jewish community but does so with a fashionable flair. #Jewish #fashion #clothes #orthodox #style Orthodox and Hasidic women — who are required wear skirts or dresses and must cover their knees, shoulders, neckline and other areas of their bodies deemed “immodest” — can now do so while expressing their personal style. Two Orthodox sisters living in Brooklyn want to break the stigma associated with dressing modestly. Australian transplants Simi Polonsky and Chaya Chanin are the creators of fashion label The Frock NYC, which adheres to the strict dress code required in the Orthodox Jewish community — but does so with a fashionable flair. Orthodox and Hasidic women must cover their knees, shoulders, neckline and other areas of their bodies deemed “immodest.” “To the average person, the stereotype of an Orthodox Jewish woman and many modest-dressing women is that they’re dowdy, unattractive and frumpy,” Polonsky told The Post. As a teen, Polonsky struggled to adhere to the dress code, prompting her to work on creative ways to cover up without crimping her personal style and forming the basis for her eventual fashion line. “It was so uncool to dress modest. I didn’t want to be uncool, so how can we coolify being modest,” the designer told The Post. Shternie Mangami and Zelda Volkov count themselves as big fans of the brand and praise it for making shopping easier. “It was always hard for me to find cute clothing because of our modest restrictions, and I find that that’s what attracts everyone to them — that they’re so fun and hip and exciting,” Volkov told The Post. While The Frock’s designs are considered demure by many standards, critics of the label argue any push towards modernity is controversial and hurts the community. “I can’t believe that this woman in this community or these women are wearing this and promoting this, and what’s gonna happen to our children. If our daughters see this, what’s the next thing?” Chanin said of the reaction she has received from some of her peers. Rabbi Simon Jacobson explained, “It’s a real raw-nerve type of topic. It touches the buttons.” Controversy aside, the label has cultivated a following. The owners, who founded the business in 2010, said they started out small by dressing women in their Jewish community but now have customers all over the globe. The designers see no conflict between their traditional dress code and free expression. “We live in America, the country that is governed by probably the most laws that you can, and we’re known as the land of the free. So to us, having guidelines and boundaries doesn’t take away our freedom,” Polonsky told The Post. Jacobson said even though the fashion label is controversial, he believes it is ultimately positive for the Jewish community. “I love the idea that people are attempting to bridge the two worlds. To show that traditional Judaism is very much with the times, can be very cool, can be very hip, can be very fashionable and beautiful,” Jacobson told The Post. Meet Brooklyn's Hasidic Designers | Style Out There | Refinery29

06:59
Subscribe to the Refinery29 channel: http://bit.ly/subscribe-to-r29 No matter your cultural or religious background, you have some conception of what's okay and not okay to wear in public. For most of us, the rules are pretty relaxed: Cleavage is usually fine, but you should probably keep your nipples covered. Pelvage might be fun to spot on the red carpet, but it's not so practical for everyday life. For orthodox Jews, modesty is much more specific. Each creed or sect has its own strict clothing guidelines that pertain to fabric, colors, length, and cut. For most, that means elbows are covered; necklines stay high; long, conservative skirts are a must; and married women cover their hair. For modern New Yorkers, those rules might seem more suffocating than empowering. However, preserving modesty doesn't have to be ideologically opposed to promoting creativity. As we've come to learn from two Hasidic women, Brooklyn designers Mimi Hecht and Mushky Notik of Mimu Maxi, living both a religious life and a fashionable one are pursuits that can go hand in hand. Their fashion-forward personal style has led them to become more in touch with their spirituality, their community, and a larger world of women from all religious backgrounds looking for modest fashion that's also exciting. In our third episode of Style Out There, Asha Leo hops across the river to Crown Heights to meet with a new generation of observant Jews who are changing the definition of religious fashion. 15 MOST Luxurious Fashion Brands

11:15
From Oscar de la Renta to Chanel, here are some of the most lavish and prestigious fashion brands. Subscribe to Hindered Thoughts http://goo.gl/d3U3RP 6. Chanel The high fashion wear company was introduced to the world back in 1909 by none other than Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel, otherwise known as “Coco Chanel.” This is where the brand gets its inspiration for the famously recognizable logo that is two interlocking C’s. The company specializes in creating haute couture for its wealthy clients but also for fashion models like Naomi Campbell, who once modeled for them, and actresses Marilyn Monroe, Keira Knightley, and Nicole Kidman. One of their most famous products is the perfume No. 5 de Chanel, along with the Chanel Suit. Today, Chanel is valued at being $6.8 billion dollars. An interesting fact to note is that Karl Lagerfeld, the creative director behind Fendi, happens to be the creative director for Chanel as well. 5. Prada Founded back in 1913 by Mario Prada, this fashion brand actually started out by manufacturing leather bags and trunks. It would then evolve into selling everything from clothing to perfume and even a brief stint of LG Prada cell phones. Though the brand may have broadened its inventory, it still spends the majority of its focus creating some of the world’s most exclusive handbags that only the rich and famous can possibly hope to afford. Mario Prada believed that women should not be involved in business so he excluded his own family members from getting involved. In a fantastic twist of irony, his son did not care to run the business so his daughter Luisa Prada took over as his successor and is now currently being run by her daughter Miuccia. 4. House of Versace The fashion empire that is the House of Versace all started with fashion designer Gianni Versace back in 1978. He created a brand that has been synonymous with elegance and simply oozes high fashion. His glamorous gowns have gone on to make a name for himself as a respected designer. Like the case of the famous black dress held with gold safety pins that actress Elizabeth Hurley wore back in 1994 to the premiere of Four Weddings and A Funeral. Sadly, Versace’s life was cut short in 1997 on the steps of his Miami mansion when he became the fifth and final victim of Andrew Cunanan. The tragic event will be the story behind American Crime Story’s season 2 titled: The Assassination of Gianni Versace. After his death, his sister Donatella became the new Artistic Director and has established a $5.5 billion company her brother would be proud of. 3. Gucci Started in 1921 by a Mr. Guccio Gucci, the company was originally dabbing in leather goods. It wasn’t until 19 years later when his son Aldo would take the company from being a one-stop shop into the fashion powerhouse that it’s now known for being. It’s Aldo that would usher in the era of the brand’s iconic “Bamboo Bag” and its “ready to wear segments.” In the 90’s, the company decided to bring American Fashion designer Tom Ford to revamp their women’s wear. He ended up helping launch the brand to where it is today. The fashion brand houses other well-known designers in its collections such as Alexander McQueen, Stella McCartney, and Yves Saint Laurent. If you’re in the market to do some shopping at this $12.4 billion brand, expect to spend at least $2,000. 2. Louis Vuitton This may come as a shock but the famous fashion brand has been around longer than you might have thought. Formed 163 years ago in 1854, a young man by the name of Louis Vuitton started out as an apprentice for a box-maker. Vuitton ended up becoming a well-known crafter of luxury trunks and opened up his own shop in Paris. He then ended up becoming the personal box-maker of Napoleon III’s wife, Empress Eugenie de Montijo. Fast forward years later and the company is now worth $28.1 billion with a generated revenue of $10.1 billion. Today, Louis Vuitton doesn’t make just trunks but designer handbags and clothing that can be spotted on the most famous of A-listers. 1. Balenciaga The beginning of Balenciaga’s reign began back in 1919 when it was established by its founder of the same name, Cristóbal Balenciaga. As a young child, Balenciaga became an apprentice to a tailor in his hometown of Getaria, Spain and would eventually get his formal training in Madrid. He would go on to create the House of Balenciaga and skyrocketed to success thanks to his artistic genius. He was hailed as the undisputed “ King of Fashion” and was highly respected among his peers which included the likes of Coco Chanel, Christian Dior, and Pierre Balmain. Balenciaga even helped train the likes of high-fashion designers Oscar de la Renta and Hubert Givenchy to name a few.

Fashion your future: Think more like a fashion designer | Suzi Vaughan | TEDxQUT

12:26
We live in times of unprecedented, disruptive change and uncertainty and most people find it challenging to thrive in those circumstances. If ‘design thinking’ is the new black, then thinking like a fashion design may just be the next big thing! This talk takes the idea of design thinking and translates it into a series of very practical tips that you can employ yourself, every day to help you think more optimistically in times of uncertainty and ambiguity. Professor Suzi Vaughan has settled (for now) in Brisbane, Australia having studied, lived and worked in Europe and Asia. My read along to the biographical book "Fancy Party Gowns" by Author Deborah Blumenthal and Illustrator Laura Freeman Published by Simon and Schuster. It tells the true story of One of the most unsung Fashion designers of her time and how because of her skill and creativity she was highly sought after by women of the social elite for her dressmaking. It also doesnt sugarcoat the discrimination she faced throughout her career, very inspiring but real childrens book.
