The people were creating amazing architectural works, bodies of literature, and artwork that we still hold in high regard today. But while those are the parts of their culture that we all know about, it turns out that the people were doing some truly strange things that got left out of most history books. The upper class in Rome even dictated what colors people could wear, and unless you were wealthy enough, they better not catch you wearing purple. Another law dictated what color hair was acceptable, and Roman women found the rules about who could go blonde to be completely unacceptable. We all know that the people in ancient Rome were obsessed with gladiators, but did you know that they would actually purchase vials of their sweat and skin cells? We have heard of being sports fans, but that is a bit farther than most of us would go! Another favorite pastime was chariot racing, and sometimes the racers needed a little extra boost of energy to make it across the finish line. This beverage they were known to drink, was a favorite of Emperor Nero, and when you hear the secret ingredient, you’ll stick to Red Bull. Being struck by lightning during any period in history isn’t enjoyable, but if it happened to someone in ancient Rome, they weren’t even allowed a proper burial. They were considered property of the god, Jupiter, whom they had clearly angered somehow. Cleopatra's Ancient Skin & Beauty Secrets. The best and most effective true skin beauty secrets are actually the lowest cost ones and those that are found strictly in nature. The basic best rule for skin care and beauty and fighting the effects of aging & wrinkles, is that is you can not eat the skin product than do not put it on your skin. Some more commonly known Cleopatra skin beauty secrets and treatments for ant-aging are using milk and honey for the skin. Milk has complete proteins & lactic acid and honey nourishes and is anti-bacterial for the skin. What is not well known in that Cleopatra (the Queen of Sheba & Queen Nefertiti) used very finely ground copper in a paste on their skin to help stimulate collagen production. It is a little know fact that copper is essential to collagen production and also essential to the preserving the color of hair. I use a some fine ground copper supplement tablets in all the skin care products to enhance their effectiveness. Other very simple and inexpensive measures to fight the effects of skin aging & wrinkles is using coconut oil and aloe vera. Another not well known skin care secret and collagen production booster is garlic. Garlic has been reputed to boost collagen production and thus help fight the effects of aging and wrinkles. But maybe the best method to help preserve skin health and overall heath and prevent skin from drying out and cracking is to drink plenty of fresh pure water. Many people often over look this and many people are actually dehydrated from drinking too many caffeinated products. Drinking lots of pure water will hydrate the skin and also help to detoxify the body and skin of harmful elements and chemicals that cause rapid aging and per-mature wrinkling of the skin.

10 strange facts about ancient people that will amaze you and make you say “WOW!” Have you ever heard about any of them? As technologies and new research methods develop, we are learning more and more about ancient people and their customs. However, the more we learn about their lives, the more this knowledge shocks us because some of the things our ancient predecessors did seem too bizarre even for the most open-minded person today. TIMESTAMPS Women used lead and sulfur to dye their hair 0:47 Glass balls and ground rubber were used as breast implants 1:53 Animal droppings were used for medical purposes 2:47 Doctors drilled holes in people’s heads to release evil spirits 3:52 Women were hired to cry at funerals 4:47 Fathers could legally kill their daughters’ lovers 5:20 In ancient Rome, fathers could sell their sons into slavery 6:03 Doctors used garlic to test for pregnancy 6:49 Ancient Egyptians shaved off their eyebrows to mourn their cats 7:45 There were public bathrooms in ancient Rome 8:44 SUMMARY - Ancient people used to use plant materials to dye their hair, but the effect didn’t last long, and as you know, there were much more important things to do than to care about your hair color. That’s why the Greeks and the Romans used a permanent hair dye that consisted of different toxic chemicals, including sulfur. - Some women put topical treatments or homemade creams on their bosoms to make them bigger. Others massaged coconut oil into their skin. But these methods aren’t all that radical. The first breast reconstructive surgery wasn’t performed until 1895 by Doctor Vincenz Czerny. - In ancient Egypt, warriors applied animal excrement to their wounds! If you think that’s crazy, check out our video about 14 Strange Ways of Life the Ancient Egyptians Practiced! - Doctors have always been fascinated with the human body and tried different methods to cure illnesses. Drilling holes, or “trepanation”, was one of them, and doctors used to believe that it could remedy such ailments as seizures, headaches, and infections. - In Ancient Rome, many families hired special women to weep at funerals in order to impress the crowd. They usually followed the procession, and to make their grief believable, the women would scratch at their cheeks to draw blood and rip out their hair. - Fathers had a very strong influence on the entire family and especially on their unmarried daughters. In fact, they had the right to choose a good husband for them. - The father was the head of the family and possessed absolute power over his wife and children. So, they also had the right to decide whether or not to keep newborn babies in the family. If they chose not to, they could sell their sons into slavery. If the person who bought the slave didn’t need him anymore, the sons could go back to their parent’s home. - The lack of detailed medical knowledge of anatomy didn’t allow doctors to say for sure why some women could get pregnant while others couldn’t. Because of this, they tried different natural ways to test for pregnancy. - Ancient Egyptian families mourned the death of a family cat by shaving off their eyebrows. The cat’s body was embalmed and adorned with a wood-carved mask. Then the tiny cat mummy was placed in a family tomb or in a cat cemetery. - People in ancient Rome used all possible means to take care of their personal hygiene. They regularly visited public baths and toilets and used cleansers and bath sponges. Which of these things amazed you the most? Tell us in the comments section below! Yukina is from a small town in the north of Japan. She has made the decision to leave school at 15 and move to the ancient city of Kyoto to follow one of Japan's most traditional professions. Stunningly filmed and with exclusive access, Yukina's journey gives a unique insight into the sacrifice and dedication needed to enter the closed but privileged world of the Geisha. After Japan's economic collapse in the 1990s the world of the geisha was badly affected. The rich clients diminished and with it a profession that dated back hundreds of years. Today there are fewer than 1,000 geisha in the whole of Japan. From the bustling streets of Kyoto we go inside the Okiya, or the geisha house, where Yukina will now live in for the next five years with the Okasan or geisha mother. Discipline is paramount. Under house rules Yukina is banned from returning home for 18 months and is not allowed to phone home. After only a few days she's finding it hard to cope with the loneliness and isolation. "I miss my friends. They are all at home together and I wonder what is going on. Here I have no one to talk to." In stark contrast to the formality of the geisha house in Kyoto we meet her family back home in rural Yamangata, Northern Japan (her warm, fun-loving mother, who is concerned and worried for Yukina says, "I couldn't believe her decision to train to be a geisha. It is so unusual we were staggered. I miss her so much") and her school friends who tell stories about the Yukina they knew, the teenage girl who'd said she wanted to become a cartoonist. Yukina explains that she thought she'd like to become a geisha because of her love of Japanese dance. But at just 15 years old she's afraid of talking to men and is unsure of how she'd handle any unwanted advances. "I hope it doesn't happen as I'm only a teenager but if it did I'd try my hardest to politely refuse." We join her at her first official party, where she has to entertain drunken clients nearly three times her age. Through the first six months of her training she sheds her jeans and teenage identity, taking a new geisha name and wearing traditional clothes and make-up. Six months after Yukina left home we join her mother as she arrives in Kyoto to attend Yukina's Misedashi, the official ceremony where she is accepted into the community as a trainee geisha. It's the first time she's seen her since she left and is shocked at how grown-up she's become. Formally dressed up, she is one of the newest members of the geisha community and is paraded through the streets of Kyoto.

Mind-blowing crazy things the Ancient Greeks did! The most shocking facts about the mythology, medical practices, technology, beauty treatments and bathroom habits of Ancient Greek Civilization! From what they used for toilet paper to their unusual workout clothes, we look at strange and bizarre facts about the Ancient Greeks #13. “Apple of My Eye”- There have been some really strange ways that people have expressed their love for each other, but the Greeks nailed it with the weird tradition of throwing an apple at the person you wanted to marry. If the person you wanted to marry caught the apple, this would mean they accepted your proposal. The sources don’t say how hard they threw the apple, but it is fun to picture an ancient greek chucking the apple as hard as they can, giving the phrase ‘think fast’ new meaning. This tradition stems from the belief that apples were sacred to the goddess Aphrodite as she was awarded a golden one when Paris of Troy chose her as the most beautiful of all goddesses--which he only did because she promised him Helen of Troy, inevitably starting the Trojan War. Because Aphrodite was the goddess of love, apples became a large part of Greek romantic tradition. Aside from proposals, it was common for newlyweds to eat apples on their wedding night and people gave apples to each other as an ancient type of valentine. #12. “Political Exile”-In a practice which we wish was still in use today, if the ancient Athenians thought anyone, especially politicians, were doing a terrible job or were considered politically or socially dangerous to the city, the citizens were allowed to take a vote on whether or not the person should be exiled. This practice was known as ostrakismos [aw-strah-kiz-mos] which is the origin of the English word ostracise. If the person received 6,000 votes they would be banished from Athens for ten years, and if they attempted to return they would be executed. However, on some occasions after a few years they could be voted back, which happened a few times when the city needed the person. #10. “Tax Shaming”- In order for a democracy to function properly you would think that strict rules on taxation would have to be enforced so that the rich wouldn’t take advantage, but in ancient Greece this was far from the case. The Greeks practiced self-policing in many ways and the idea of paying your own fair share for the greater good was no different. Yes, there were rich and there were poor, but the Greeks had an ingrained understanding that in order for society as a whole to improve everyone had to make sacrifices. For those blessed by the gods with wealth it was only natural to give back. For the most part, in modern society this is something that must be forced on people via law, otherwise, there would never be funding for public works or necessary governmental institutions. To get the rich to pony up--all the Greeks had to do was to accuse someone of being frugal in their donations. This was a rare occurrence, because in ancient Greece, the way to really brag about one’s wealth was to give the biggest donation. It was also embedded in their culture that most riches were accrued via luck, so there was no inherent shame in being financially less fortunate.

Limited Online Coaching Plans For Vegans (200$ Off!): http://bit.ly/qg2019 Were Greeks That MASSIVE? - 3 Lessons From Ancient Training Or were they using photoshop? Download the Free E-Book 'A Guide For Thriving On A Vegan Diet': http://www.qualitygains.com/ Subscribe for more Gains: http://bit.ly/subscribeytQG Our beauty standards can be traced far back to Greece. At least men's beauty standards. Aphrodite looked like big foot in a gollum posture. But considering men, the body of the statues were rocking a sixpack and had perfect symmetry. Such as the world famous art of the discus thrower. Look at that calm, stoic face – no signs of struggle, while the arm veins are popping. Look at these androgenic shoulder muscles and ab symmetry. Very similar to what you see on men's health covers nowadays. But where did artists get those body looks from ? Where people actually able to achieve such god-like body back then ? Or where greeks using photoshop? Here's three lessons from the history of weight training. Men's beauty standards stayed mostly the same, because muscles have always been beneficial, in the face of evolution. Men have more muscles and less body fat than women, and therefore compete on a physical level. While the hardest form of competing is physical fighting, a less damaging form is basically showing off. You see this in the animal kingdom and you basically see this in modern day primates. Before a fight you make yourself big, you want to show dominance over your opponent without getting hurt. If your male opponent is seeing you as a threat, aka you being able to inflict damage on his organism, he is less likely to go on a fight with you. The psychological aspect is huge, in fighting. Lesson 1: Muscles were beneficial in the face of evolution. Yes, in my experience it was a huge plus for girls (although they don't really like to tell you that) and men respect you more. Due to sexual and natural selection, men were always interested in acquiring muscles. The first documented case of progressive weight training was in Ancient Greece, where Milo of Croton lifted a calf every single day. until it was a bull. Another Greek, the physician Galen, described strenght training exercises using the halters. Were originally, people simply trained with stones, they then used halters, which where similar to dumbbells. And here's the biggest downside of ancient weight training, the halters, ancient dumbbells, where only weighing between 2 and 9 kilograms. This makes long-term progression impossible, as you usually max out the 9 kilograms in the first year of progressive weight training. If you don't have progression over the first year it will impossible for you to build a greek god body. As your body mainly builds muscles on a certain rep range, which is between 6-12. Lesson 2: Repetitions can be changed now and then, but focus on increasing the weight and keeping the reps steady. Now you may say : But QG, ancient men were much tougher than we are to this day. Greek children started work when they were 3 years old. The people that were rowing in the ships were expected to do that for 12 hours at a time – while eating a less than optimal diet. And you're right, times back then were tough. But these cases are similar to an ultraendurance runner nowadays, look at them they're not walking titans. They're sticks, as their body is optimized for cardiovascular feats, not for maximum strength. Or look at children in Africa or Aborigines, they live a super tough live and they're malnourished. Are they freaking muscular ? No ! Because their body is adapted for survival as the greeks were, not for hypertrophy as you have to be when you want to have a greek god body. It's true that being tough and having muscles often go together, as training needs discipline, willpower and grit. Lesson 3: Toughness and muscularity are two separate things. I'm sure weight training made you feel great and gave you some sort of muscles, but for real muscle growth you need progression of the weights at a certain range of repetition, which happens to be roughly between 6-12. For this progression you needed a great variety of dumbbells, which the gyms didn't have, or you needed to load the bar with more plates, shots of lead or use exercise machines. Which only really was possible in the last 100 to 200 years. Greek sculptures are therefore ore idealistic, they give us an idea of how the perfect body would look like, but they're never similar to reality. They're a product of the imagination of greek and roman sculptors. What we do with photoshop or steroids nowadays, our ancestors have done with extra bronze or marble hundreds of years ago. The most crazy facts about Ancient Egyptian civilization! From odd medicines to strange rituals, here are some of the most fascinating, disgusting and just plain weird things about Ancient Egypt! “Got Your Nose”- There have been many bizarre punishment for criminals throughout history but the ancient Egyptian Pharaoh Aktisanes takes the cake with his sentences. During his reign over the glorious ancient empire any criminal convicted of a crime would have their nose cut off and subsequently be banished to the aptly named city of Rhinocolura which translates to “city of noseless people”. Though this may sound brutal it was actually considered a very lenient punishment for this time period. The criminal having their nose removed was probably the least horrible part of the sentence as well because Rhinocolura was a terrible place to live. Not only was it full of criminals but the inhabitants had to build their homes and facilities using leftover rubble from other settlements and the water that they used for drinking and bathing was extremely polluted. “One Hundred Heirs”-- In ancient times polygamy and having dozens of children was the thing to do, especially among royalty. One of the most unbelievable examples of this was the family of one of the most famous pharaohs, Ramses II. Also known as Ozymandias and Ramses the Great, Ramses the II is considered to be the most powerful pharaoh who ever lived and is the ruler that is most commonly put forward as a candidate as the pharaoh in the Bible’s story of Moses. Ramses left a lasting legacy on Egyptian culture and not just because of his politics and the public works that were constructed during his time but because of his huge impact on Egypt’s gene pool. It is believed that Ramses had at least 8 wives and more just over 100 confirmed children. Though he outlived most of his issue, there is no doubt that this insane amount of children assured that his genetic legacy lived on for centuries. Ramses had so many children that he is ranked number 8 on the list of historical men with the most children. “Job For Everyone”- The ancient Egyptians were ingenuitive in several aspects of life and one of the most ingenious aspects of their culture was a way that they found jobs for those who could be considered outcasts. Instead of ridiculing or casting out those with dwarfism or gigantism they used these people’s ability to stand out from a crowd to their advantage. In order to prevent that precious gold wouldn’t be stolen by the workers assigned to the tasks of collecting, guarding and using it, they used people with dwarfism and gigantism as gold workers. This not only gave these people jobs in a world that mainly valued physical labor, but it assured that if they tried to steal they wouldn’t be able to hide in groups of people. Adside from easily finding jobs in Egypt’s gold industry, dwarfs and pygmies were revered as people that had special gifts endowed on them from the gods, so they were treated favorably in other aspects of life.

Illness is in no way a new thing, and if you happened to be alive and sick during the time of the pharaohs, there was most likely a medicine treatment of some sort to help you through. However, in ancient Egypt, medicine the way we think of it now was not always the preferred method of curing diseases.

You’ll never believe what the Mayans did to their teeth or the deadly sports they played. As one of the most mysterious and successful ancient civilizations to this day, the Mayans had some really unbelievable and shocking practices. Here are ten of the most interesting traditions of the ancient Mayans. Subscribe to Viral Sap http://goo.gl/wKZhwl 10 UNBELIEVABLE Mayan Traditions Ancient Mayans had unique ideals about beauty, and to achieve these ideals sometimes started from infancy. Boards were pressed onto infants foreheads to make them flatter, and objects were even dangled in front of baby’s faces in order for them to develop crossed eyes, which were a desired trait at the time. The Mayans performed some of the most painful body modifications. They were one of the first cultures to practice the art of tattooing. Many Mayans would also get gems implanted in their teeth. This long procedure included manually drilling holes and attaching the gems inside the teeth using some type of resin. Ancient Mayans had a name for every day of the year. Instead of parents choosing the name of their child, they were expected to take the name given to the day. Mayans often used hallucinogenic enemas. They used drugs such as peyote, mushrooms and various others often in rituals, but also as painkillers. They sometimes gave them as enemas to quicken the body’s absorption of the substance. The Mayans liked sports, and one of their favorite games was Ōllamaliztli The games used a ball weighing around 8 pounds that was not allowed to touch the ground in play. The game was religiously significant and was extremely dangerous, if not deadly. They were very skilled at architecture and some of their pyramids may be even larger than Giza. After their civilization faded around the 9th century, the last official Mayan state existed until 1697. Mayans still exist today and descendants number in the millions. Ancient Mayans were infamous for violently killing people to offer as sacrifices. Often, children were the victims of sacrifice because of their purity and innocence. Today, some Mayans still perform blood sacrifices, only they use animals instead. The blood was believed to make the Gods stronger. The Mayan hieroglyphs are one of the most complex writing systems. Experts were only able to begin decoding the language in the 1950s They were capable of writing books, using turkey quills as pens and soft tree bark as paper. Maya blue is a pigment used in much of the art of the culture that left archeologists baffled. It is one most resistant pigments and is perfectly preserved in much of the art work of the Mayans, even after thousands of years. Mayans would create incense using their own blood. These mystical incense would produce smoke through which visions could be seen. To create them, they would pierce themselves through the tongue or penis usually and pass it through the hole until it was soaked with blood. When a king or queen looked into the smoke, they could see a feathered serpent who would tell a prophecy. (smoke video) Mayans were terrified of death. When a family member would die, they would bury them beneath their house with corn in their mouth

Papyrus Around Mummies It’s long been a mystery how ancient Egyptians went about their day to day business, because the only records that remain from the time are those deemed important enough to be preserved in tombs or on tablets. This all changed in 2017, though, when archaeologists took a closer look at the papyri that was used to encase the bodies of mummies. Workers in ancient Egypt recycled their papyrus- after all it was quite an elaborate product to make- and waste not, want not! One of the most common uses was to decorate the boxes that mummies were kept in. Quite often scraps of papyrus would be stuck together with glue, similar to how paper mâché is made. Of course, the boxes are now important artefacts themselves, but researchers have developed a digital imaging technique that actually lets them see what was originally written on the paper, and the results are pretty amazing!! They were scraps of people’s shopping lists and tax returns, which gives a much deeper insight into how Ancient Egyptians lived their lives and how society worked. It turns out they were far more similar to us, today, than you might think, and had to worry about the same day-to-day concerns as people have in the 2 thousand years since they lived. We still need to buy groceries, and we still have to pay taxes!! 9. The Cairo Manuscript There are many ancient Egyptian artefacts still waiting to be found across the country, but the Cairo Manuscript was one that was originally discovered in the 1800’s, before being lost again for another 70 years. It was re-discovered in an old storage box in Cairo’s Egyptian museum in 2015, and is simply stunning. It’s the largest known Egyptian leather manuscript, and is about 8 feet (2.4 m) long! As a reference, I am 5 foot 6! Only the most important documents were written in such a way, because leather was seen as a very prestigious material. Unfortunately, it disintegrates much quicker than papyri, so it’s very rare to find leather manuscripts. It’s written on both sides, and is a religious manuscript that details a series of incantations that would have been recited by a priest, and images of rituals for funerary processions. There’s a strip of incredibly colourful images across the top, and it is thought to be at least 4,000 years old. This predates depictions of similar images that have been found on the base of sarcophagi that were uncovered from the necropolis of Hermopolis. The Cairo Manuscript is one of the most detailed and well preserved texts from so long ago, and further uncovered the rituals associated with Egyptian religion. 8. Pet Cemetery It’s well known how the Ancient Egyptians treated their dead, especially the bodies of important figures, but a discovery that was made near the Red Sea in 2017 shed some light on how most Egyptians lived closely w ith their pets. A team of Polish archaeologists have uncovered the biggest mass pet cemetery which is over 2,000 years old. It contains the remains of more than 100 domesticated pets, including dogs, cats, and monkeys. They found it was part of the area they were digging to investigate the town of Berenike and the temple built in honor of the god, Serapis. The unusual thing about the cemetery is that the pets were mummified before they were buried. Someone spent a lot of time and care to make sure their pet would be well preserved for the afterlife. This ritual burial shows that the animals were close companions to their owners, and were not religious sacrifices. Some were buried in elaborate ways- sometimes with accessories, and two cats were found alongside ostrich eggs. Animals were an important part of ancient Egyptians lives, and they particularly valued cats for the home, dogs because they were responsible for guarding tombs, monkeys because of their shouts, snakes for their representation of fertile lands, and cows which were used as symbols of beauty and represented the god, Hathor. Origins Explained is the place to be to find all the answers to your questions, from mysterious events and unsolved mysteries to everything there is to know about the world and its amazing animals!

How the Aztecs Changed the World : Documentary on the Accomplishments of the Aztec Empire. Documentaries have for many decades inhabited the schedules of public broadcasters. They have chronicled the lives and institutions of western democracies. In the past two decades, however, documentaries have become recognised as an innovative cultural form. Instead of being exclusively funded by television channels, documentaries receive money from a number of sources, including film funds, private investors and foundations. Rather than observing, documentaries are now thought capable of changing the world. Documentaries have changed a lot of other people’s lives, too, and now more than ever. In fact, we’re in a Golden Age for docs, with more distribution outlets, more box office success, more public attention and more talented directors making more meaningful, impactful projects than ever before. The best documentaries illuminate a person, an event or an issue in powerful ways, giving thousands or even millions of people a chance to better understand something they knew little or nothing about. Documentaries are the perfect place for young filmmakers to begin learning their craft. That’s because fiction film is about re-creating a version of reality, tuned to the story’s dramatic necessities. Documentaries, by contrast, require only that students choose the subject matter and capture what is already there. Documentaries shine a light on some of the darkest corners of our planet, and by doing that and engaging audiences they can truly make a difference and prompt real change. You lose count of the number of times you hear documentaries trashed. The argument is as old as the documentary, and it goes like this. Docs manipulate reality, over-relying on effects such as music. They aren't really journalistic at all. Maybe one should think of them as drama without actors, cheaply made and with few pretensions to seriousness. Shamelessly, they pander to our worst voyeuristic impulses. Under the guise of telling the truth, docs entertain us with lies. It would be more accurate to say that documentaries are among the most valuable, neglected cultural forms of our time. They aren't all good, to be sure, but the best are unusual, persuasive, seductive. And their success has something to do with the way they are taken for granted, casually watched. Few old things have flourished in the cultural chaos of this century, but docs have steadily consolidated their hold on a small portion of the contemporary consciousness. Film stars want to make or sponsor them. Sometimes, if you squint hard enough, they really do seem like the new rock'n'roll. "Documentary," says the dictionary. "Noun. Based on or recreating an actual event, era, life story, that purports to be factually accurate and contains no fictional elements." This is useful, but a trifle over-cautious. Why shouldn't non-fiction contain elements of fiction? And why should something only "purport" to be factually accurate? It reeks of the old charges that docs are unreliable because they are filmed. When you describe anything, it is altered. The act of seeing modifies what is seen. Most people who watch docs understand this.No body of theory exists to legitimise docs and I'm grateful for this. They have come to subsist at a crossroads of contemporary culture, somewhere between journalism, film narrative and television entertainment. They appear to thrive on contradictions, between the stubborn reality they purport to capture and their necessarily limited means, between the impositions of storytelling and the desire to interpret or analyse. They aren't fictional, ever, but they can seem in their attractiveness more real than reality.

We often think that we are completely different from ancient people, but archaeology shows that we are quite wrong. Here is a list of 14 unbelievable facts about the life of ancient Egyptians. TIMESTAMPS The invented written language 0:49 They invented tables 1:19 They invented wigs 1:38 They extracted iron from meteorites 2:14 They invented toothpaste 2:51 They used breath mints 3:53 They used antibiotics in the treatment 4:26 They invented eye makeup 5:02 They formed the world’s first police 5:24 They invented the calendar 6:15 They were the first to produce beer 7:12 They used door locks 7:40 They played bowling 8:11 They treated eyes 8:48 SUMMARY - The Egyptians used pictograms, which simply depicted words. Later they added characters that looked a lot like modern alphabets, which helped them to write down some abstract ideas. - Before the Egyptians, there were no tables (as far as we know). So, they made this simple piece of furniture to keep the food off the ground and also for gaming purposes. - Because of really hot climate, most Egyptians (at least, men) shaved their heads. That’s why when you watch a movie about ancient Egypt, most men are bald. However, some people wanted to have some kind of hair on their heads. So, when they felt like it, they used wigs. - Archaeologists found metal beads in an ancient Egyptian tomb. In 1911 nine pretty small beads were found in the north of Egypt. But why were these beads so unique? The thing is, the Egyptians started to smelt iron only 2 thousand years later. - they invented one of the first versions of toothpaste. It consisted of ashes, burnt eggshells, and ox hooves. Archaeologists even managed to find some guides on how to mix these ingredients to make the right paste. - Scientists examined mummies and found severely worn out teeth even in young people. So, to do something about the unpleasant smells from the mouth, they invented the first mints. They used myrrh and cinnamon, they boiled them with honey and made some kind of pellets. - The Egyptians kind of invented antibiotics way before the 20th century, but it looks like they didn’t know it. They used moldy flatbread to cure festering wounds. They fermented something that looked like porridge that had very high levels of tetracycline which we know as an antibiotic. - Both men and women in Egypt wore makeup. And it was a symbol of nobility. The more makeup you had, the higher your social status was. - The world’s first police were formed during the Middle Kingdom period (years 2050-1800 BC). It included the most loyal warriors and foreign mercenaries. The Egyptian policemen didn’t have guns or cool badges, but they were armed with staffs and accompanied by dogs and trained monkeys. - If the missed that day, all the harvest was at risk, so the Egyptians designed a system to be able to know which season it was. They had three seasons in a year: inundation, growing, and harvest. Each season consisted of four months, and each month had 30 days. - You might have heard that the workers who built the pyramids were paid with 4-5 liter of beer a day. - The ancient Egyptians possessed accurate medical knowledge that could be compared to modern practices. Scientists who examined mummies found traces of some truly challenging operations: heart bypass surgery, organ transplantation, and even plastic surgeries. - Door locks were created in Egypt and China, probably because such devices were needed. The more neighbors you have, the more reasons to lock your door. The mechanisms of the locks were quite simple: there were special pins inside that didn’t let anyone open the door without the key. - In one ancient settlement near Cairo, archaeologists found a playroom going back to 3200 BC with carved lanes and balls of various sizes for fingers. The rules were a little bit different from the modern bowling we all are used to. - Eye infection was a common disease among the Egyptians. They used various methods of treatment: they used bactericidal paint and remedies made of… human brains.
