"Copy & Paste’ - Hidden Asperger’s-- Girls with Aspergers | Niamh McCann | TEDxDunLaoghaire

10:05
16 year old Niamh McCann is passionate about many things including ballet, the plays of William Shakespeare, the environment and public speaking! Her talk looks at the challenges of the high-functioning end of the Autistic Spectrum for girls. Niamh is a quiet, sensitive girl who studied hard, got good grades and not one to cause trouble. She researched the reasons why girls on the spectrum are often misdiagnosed or have late diagnosis. Her hope is that through her talk and sharing what she has learnt, all girls on the spectrum will feel freer to embrace who they are and that those who are yet to be diagnosed are not afraid to do so. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

Some of the main signs of autism in girls is social anxiety, this is a huge one for mild autism symptoms. The telltale sings of autism is repetitive behaviour and obsessive interstices, this also translates to women with autism and Aspergers in girls. Girls with autism can present themselves as typical, but to the person who understands the condition of autism and Asperger’s syndrome it may be easy to spot autism in girls. The autistic girl has always been a topic that has been some what missed, this is one of the mission of The Aspie World to create awareness for autism in girls. A search of autism symptoms checklist on google will show up lots and lots of autism symptoms and Aspergers traits. But these will almost always be from a male perspective of diagnosing aspergers symptoms in men and not autism in girls. This video is dedicated to the understanding of autism in girls and autism spectrum disorder. Helping girls with autism have a better chance of getting through a females autism test to a successful diagnosis is an important thing to do. Asperger Syndrome - Traits in Girls - Part One

07:14
Hi guys! This video will span across 4 parts because there's a lot to get in. This part focusses on 'Appearance/Personal Health' and includes the following traits, which I discuss in relation to myself: 'Dresses comfortably due to sensory issues and practicality': 0:47 'Will not spend much time on grooming and hair. Hairstyles usually have to be 'wash and wear'. Can be quite happy not grooming at all at times': 01:18 'Eccentric personality; may be reflected in appearance': 02:54 'Is youthful for her age, in looks, dress, behaviour and tastes': 03:12 'Usually a little more expressive in face and gesture than male counterparts': 03:30 'May have many androgynous traits despite an outwardly feminine appearance. Thinks of herself as half male/half female': 04:06 'May not have a strong sense of identity, and can be very chameleon --like, especially before diagnosis': 04:44 'Enjoys reading and films as a retreat, often sci-fi, fantasy, children's, can have favourites which are a refuge': 05:41 'Uses control as a stress management technique: rules, discipline, rigid in certain habits, which will contradict her seeming unconventionality': 06:06 'Usually happiest at home or in other controlled environment': 06:41 And this is the list of traits I'm working through: http://www.help4aspergers.com/pb/wp_a58d4f6a/images/img244154ad237783e339.JPG If you liked the video, please subscribe/share/like it/comment etc., as all of that is really helpful for me! Autism in Females: How is it Different?

08:48
Order my book today! ARE U OK? http://geni.us/sva4iUY In case you weren’t aware, Autism Spectrum Disorder (or ASD) affects 1 in every 68 children, and are much more commonly diagnosed in boys. Some studies show that boys are four times more likely than girls to have an ASD, but new research suggests that it may appear differently in girls, and therefore go undiagnosed or possibly be misdiagnosed as something entirely different. The criteria for diagnosing autism spectrum disorder (ASD)—a developmental condition that is marked by social and communication difficulties and repetitive, inflexible patterns of behavior—are based on data derived almost entirely from studies of boys. This lack of data surrounding how ASD may affect a female has lead to years of misunderstanding and misdiagnosis, especially for those girls on the higher functioning end of the spectrum. Research has shown that females who received a diagnosis of ASD at a very young age were much more affected by the ASD than their male counterparts. They showed lower IQs and extreme behavioral problems, whereas the boys who were diagnosed did not have to be so severe to get proper treatment. In a very recent study (2016) they found that even the way that the brain processes social information is different based on the sex of the child. Boys with ASD use certain portions of their brain to manage social situations, and those regions are different than boys without ASD, so seeing those parts of their brain light up during a social interaction was an easy way to diagnose. However, in girls with ASD it’s not like that. In a girl with ASDs brain, it lights up in the same way that a non ASD boy’s would. Why is that? We don’t know, and they are doing follow up research on this interesting finding right now, but this has already been supported by a completely different study conducted in Australia on 25 boys with ASD and 25 girls with ASD. Researchers believe that this occurs because of our sex hormones. We already know that men and women are very different, but maybe we don’t fully understand just HOW different we are. They also believe that girls as much better at noticing and mimicking behavior, and will work really hard to appear completely “normal.” Therefore in order to properly diagnose a girl with ASD you will need to not just observe them, but also talk with them about their personal experience with socializing or managing change. They also find that boys with autism are not really interested in socializing and when asked will report that they don’t really care if they have any friends. Girls on the other hand, do care, and show a much greater desire to connect. They also found that girls with ASD don’t tend to have as much repetitive behavior as the boys, and many of their pastimes and interests are similar to other girls without ASD. Last, they share that girls with ASD tend to be viewed as too much. Meaning they are often too intense, too sensitive, or too rigid. Many girls have been diagnosed with OCD, ADHD, and even anorexia instead of ASD like they should have been. Anorexia in the female ASD population is much higher than non ASD girls, and they believe that many of the symptoms and profiles of the 2 diagnosis work together. Meaning that the rigidity, focus, and detail oriented nature of both ASD and eating disorders can mean that EDs are the way that ASD can show itself in the female population. They also find that females with ASD (since they tend to take things literally and are direct) they can more easily fall victim to sexual exploitation (such as assault, abusive relationships, etc). They say this especially for females because just as we discussed earlier, they want connection, and are aware of their their struggle to make friends and build relationships. So they may be with someone just because they show them a little attention, or even if that attention isn’t kind or loving. So be careful. The Truth About Asperger's Syndrome - 2 - Sensory Overload and Meltdowns

11:23
Living on the spectrum is difficult, and I don't think people appreciate what it's truly like. This is the second part of a series of videos where I discuss the various symptoms of Asperger's Syndrome (high-functioning autism) and give examples from my own life regarding what it's like to live with AS. Modus Operandi: Whether you have a personal relationship with somebody who has AS, or you’ve only met an AS sufferer once, I hope these videos will help you appreciate the true difficulty of living with the syndrome. I am doing these videos not because I am seeking pity… I am not seeking pity. Please do not go out of your way to offer it. I am doing this because I know there are a lot of young boys and girls who have the syndrome and do not know they have it. I wasn’t diagnosed with AS until I was 18, and being undiagnosed can lead to confusing, embarrassing, and sometimes traumatic experiences… experiences which are not just unique to me. In fact, they afflict the majority of people who have AS. If I had known when I was younger that I had the syndrome, I could have saved myself a lot of grief and lived a much more fulfilling, productive life. That’s not to say I don’t lead a happy life now… but I think we can all agree that by addressing these types of problems earlier, we can spend much more of our life feeling fulfilled and feeling productive, especially considering we have such a short time on this planet. What Aspergers Looks Like - Just a Girl with Aspergers

02:35
People often say I don't look like I have Aspergers but you can't just look at someone and say.. Oh he or she has Aspergers. Part of what makes having Aspergers hard is that everyone looks at you and thinks you are normal and they expect you to act a certain way or understand everything the way they do. I just wanted to tell you that it's not a visible thing. You have to know someone or just believe that if they go the diagnosis that they probably went through a lot of testing with doctors like I have. And by the way, I don't know why I want it to be 3 minutes long.. I guess 3 is a magic number. LOL

Guys I know this video is SO long, but if you plan on watching it then please watch all of it. There's no point in skipping through it and then asking me questions that I already answered in the video because you missed it.. You can't only watch 50% or lower of this and expect it to match up / make sense. Please guys, what is 40 minutes, really? Thankyou, I would appreciate you watching all of the video so much and thankyou so much if you already have. Autism Awareness is so important to me and I'm so proud to be an 'Aspie'. Please try to understand that it wasn't easy for me to open up about absolutely everything that I did, but for the sake of helping others and raising awareness on such a massive condition, I was brave and I did. I'm so glad I do have the courage to be open with you guys about a lot of stuff because I am so open anyway, and I love having that connection - it just means so much to feel welcome and understood by you guys :) I hope I helped!! Diagnosed with Asperger's/HF Autism: Why Women Are Often Missed

08:04
An introductory video on a recent diagnosis of high functioning autism/asperger's and why women are often missed. One of my obsessions is creating art videos. I consider making videos to be a type of language for me. Please check out my art videos on my channel. Other topics I want to eventually touch base on are MBTI and folks on the spectrum, niche interests and obsessions and more.

The Truth About Asperger's Syndrome - 4.5 - The Female Perspective

12:30
Special thanks to Patricia, Jess, Sarah and Abby for making this episode possible! Living on the spectrum is difficult, and I don't think people appreciate what it's truly like. This is the fourth (and a half ;D) part of a series of videos where I discuss the various symptoms of Asperger's Syndrome (high-functioning autism) and give examples from my own life regarding what it's like to live with AS. ASPERGERS SYNDROME TEENAGERS: Dating & Making Friends

03:27
http://www.AspergersSociety.org/newsletter = Click for FREE Newsletter http://www.AspergersSociety.org/teen.htm For a teenager with Aspergers Syndrome, as well as children with Aspergers, friends can sometimes seem like that impossible dream...a process that just doesn't make any sense. Because teens with Aspergers Syndrome have such difficulty reading social cures, these teenagers can't seem to pick up on the social slang that many teens use; they can't talk easily and casually like to many teens do. Because of this they are often shunned. Teenagers with Aspergers syndrome want friends but their Aspergers symptoms prevent them from figuring out how to get them. For a teenager with autism, this can be especially painful. Aspergers disorder or Aspergers disease, as some call it, can lead to depression, anxiety and worry for many children, teens and adults.

Something a little different…me and my friend Milly decided it was a good time to raise awareness about some of our experiences with Asperger’s Syndrome, as our stories were recently published in a book (linked below). The book was written by our clinician about how to help girls with ASD, and we both wrote about our journeys and the difficulties we have had. BUY THE BOOK HERE:- http://amzn.eu/d/i43TCNd We hope that this will help other young women and are open to making more videos on specific aspects of the condition in the future…if anyone is interested! We are also interested to hear what you think and any questions you might have, or if you want to share your experiences like we have Thanks for watching and we hope you enjoyed or have learnt a bit more about the differences between girls and boys with Asperger’s!

Aspergers Syndrome Teens - Dating and Puberty

03:56
http://www.AspergersSociety.org/newsletter = Click for FREE Newsletter http://www.aspergerssociety.org/teen Info on Dating, Puberty and Your Asperger's Syndrome Teen One major issue that comes up in middle and high school is dating and the onset of puberty. Autistic teens typically have the same urges and desires to have relationships and to sexually explore as other teens; the difference is that they often might not understand some of the rules and unspoken guidelines that apply. Not understanding the rules and unspoken guidelines can often get them into trouble. Some teens have trouble knowing when it is appropriate to do things like masturbation, and they need explicit instruction that those things are to be done only in private. Some teens might need to be told that touching any private areas in public is a no no; talking about sexual subjects in public is typically also inappropriate but your AS teen may not understand the bounds. Girls and Dating Teenage girls with autism may need special instruction and guidelines to ensure safe dating. They are at special risk for being taken advantage of because they may not understand when someone is harassing them or even abusing them. They might not understand the difference between good attention and bad attention. Again, explicit instruction needs to be given about this issue. Social stories can be written about it, or else just give concrete examples and break it into small pieces so as to be sure you teen understands the concepts you are trying to present. Another issue that can cause problems with girls is promiscuity. If your AS daughter has few friends, she may be desperate for attention -- unfortunately, she may attract the wrong type of attention. All AS teens, boys and girls, tend to interpret what people say literally. They also have a tendency to believe what people say. Girls, especially, may be very naive when it comes to a boy's attention. A smooth talking boy may start complementing your daughter and giving her the attention that she is craving. In a situation like this, your daughter may be very susceptible to manipulation. She may believe whatever the boy tells her. This may lead to early sexual activity or other inappropriate behavior. Boys and Dating Adolescent males with autism need to be told rules about how you approach girls in an appropriate way so as not to seem like they are stalkers. Sometimes, caught up in their own enthusiasm and not understanding social rules, teens with AS have been accused of being "creepy" or "bugging" girls, simply because they did not understand how to approach girls in an appropriate way. Also, girls may use indirect language or hints to indicate that your son is moving too fast or that they have little interest in a relationship. Unfortunately, AS teens often misinterpret or completely miss indirect language and hints. For example, a girl may be constantly "busy" when your son asks her for a date; but he may not understand that this is a polite rejection. Unless a girl states flatly that she does not want to date your son, he may continue to call and hound her -- creating an unpleasant situation for all involved. This is just a small part of the answers you will need to successfully survive and thrive with Aspergers. If you are looking for additional information immediately, go to the following site: http://www.AspergersSociety.org/teen Watch this video at: http://youtu.be/O0ufspxHxJY

Asperger Syndrome - Traits in Girls - Part Three

Hi guys! This video will span across 4 parts because there's a lot to get in. Part one is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MHHYBn... This part focusses on 'Emotional/Physical' and includes the following traits, which I discuss in relation to myself: 'Emotionally immature and emotionally sensitive': 0:06 'Anxiety and fear are predominant emotions': 01:08 'More open to talking about feelings and emotional issues than males with AS': 01:51 'Strong sensory issues -- sounds, sights, smells, touch, and prone to overload (less likely to have taste/food texture issues as males)': 02:28 'Moody and prone to bouts of depression. May have been diagnosed as bi-polar or manic depressive (common comorbid diagnosis' of AS/autism) while the AS diagnosis was missed': 03:53 'Probably given several different prescriptions to treat symptoms. Will be very sensitive to medications and anything else she puts in her body so may have had adverse reactions': 04:43 '9 out of 10 have mild to severe Gastro-intestinal difficulties e.g. ulcers, acid reflux, IBS ect.': 05:32 'Stims to soothe when sad or agitated: rocking, face-rubbing, humming, finger flicking, leg bouncing, finger or foot-tapping': 05:36 'Similarly physical when happy, hand flapping, clapping, jumping, singing, running around, dancing, bouncing': 07:06 'Prone to temper or crying meltdowns, even in public, sometimes over seemingly small things due to sensory or emotional overload': 07:54 'Hates injustice and hates to be misunderstood, this can incite anger and rage': 08:57 'Prone to mutism when stressed or upset, especially after a meltdown. Less likely to stutter than male counterparts but may have raspy voice, monotone at times, when stressed or sad': 09:50 This is the thread where we were discussing this topic:http://asperclick.com/topic/265-ashfa...
