02:46

She outlines her working methods and discusses why it is much easier to write plays than novels. DID YOU KNOW? Agatha Christie received training as a singer and concert pianist in Paris, but her shyness prevented her from pursuing this as a career in a serious way.

Agatha Christie

02:42
Dame Agatha Mary Clarissa Christie, Lady Mallowan, DBE (née Miller; 15 September 1890 – 12 January 1976) was an English crime novelist, short story writer and playwright. She also wrote six romances under the name Mary Westmacott, but she is best known for the 66 detective novels and 14 short story collections that she wrote under her own name, most of which revolve around the investigative work of such characters as Hercule Poirot, Jane Marple, Parker Pyne, Harley Quin/Mr Satterthwaite and Tommy and Tuppence Beresford. She wrote the world's longest-running play, a murder mystery, The Mousetrap. In 1971 she was made a Dame for her contribution to literature. Christie was born into a wealthy upper-middle-class family in Torquay, Devon. She served in a hospital during the First World War before marrying and starting a family in London. She was initially unsuccessful at getting her work published, but in 1920 The Bodley Head press published her novel The Mysterious Affair at Styles, featuring the character of Hercule Poirot. This launched her literary career. The Guinness Book of World Records lists Christie as the best-selling novelist of all time. Her novels have sold roughly 2 billion copies, and her estate claims that her works come third in the rankings of the world's most-widely published books, behind only Shakespeare's works and the Bible. According to Index Translationum, she remains the most-translated individual author – having been translated into at least 103 languages. And Then There Were None is Christie's best-selling novel, with 100 million sales to date, making it the world's best-selling mystery ever, and one of the best-selling books of all time. Christie's stage play The Mousetrap holds the record for the longest initial run: it opened at the Ambassadors Theatre in the West End on 25 November 1952 and as of 2015 is still running after more than 25,000 performances. In 1955 Christie was the first recipient of the Mystery Writers of America's highest honour, the Grand Master Award. Later the same year, Witness for the Prosecution received an Edgar Award by the MWA for Best Play. In 2013, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd was voted the best crime novel ever by 600 fellow writers of the Crime Writers' Association. On 15 September 2015, coinciding with Christie's 125th birthday, And Then There Were None was voted as the "World's Favorite Christie", followed closely by Murder on the Orient Express and The Murder of Roger Ackroyd. Most of her books and short stories have been adapted for television, radio, video games and comics, and more than thirty feature films have been based on her work.

Agatha Christie Story - The Mysterious Affair at Styles

02:13:23
The Mysterious Affair at Styles is a detective novel by British writer Agatha Christie. It was written in the middle of the First World War, in 1916, and first published by John Lane in the United States in October 1920[1] and in the United Kingdom by The Bodley Head (John Lane's UK company) on 21 January 1921.[2] The US edition retailed at $2.00[1] and the UK edition at seven shillings and sixpence (7/6).[2] Styles was Christie's first published novel. It introduced Hercule Poirot, Inspector (later, Chief Inspector) Japp, and Arthur Hastings.[3] Poirot, a Belgian refugee of the Great War, is settling in England near the home of Emily Inglethorp, who helped him to his new life. His friend Hastings arrives as a guest at her home. When the woman is killed, Poirot uses his detective skills to solve the mystery. This is also the setting of Curtain, Poirot's last case. The book includes maps of the house, the murder scene, and a drawing of a fragment of a will. The true first publication of the novel was as a weekly serial in The Times, including the maps of the house and other illustrations included in the book. This novel was one of the first ten books published by Penguin Books when it began in 1935. This first mystery novel by Agatha Christie was well received by reviewers. An analysis in 1990 was positive about the plot, considered the novel one of the few by Christie that is well-anchored in time and place, a story that knows it describes the end of an era, and mentions that the plot is clever. Christie had not mastered cleverness in her first novel, as "too many clues tend to cancel each other out"; this was judged a difficulty "which Conan Doyle never satisfactorily overcame, but which Christie would." The Murder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie | Audiobook The Murder of Roger Ackroyd is a work of detective fiction by British writer Agatha Christie, first published in June 1926 in the United Kingdom by William Collins, Sons and in the United States by Dodd, Mead and Company on 19 June 1926. It is the third novel to feature Hercule Poirot as the lead detective. Poirot retires to a village near the home of a friend he met in London, Roger Ackroyd, who agrees to keep him anonymous, as he pursues his retirement project of perfecting vegetable marrows. He is not long at this pursuit when his friend is murdered. Ackroyd's niece calls Poirot in to ensure that the guilt does not fall on Ackroyd's stepson; Poirot promises to find the truth, which she accepts. The novel was initially well-received, remarked for the startling ending, and in 2013, 87 years after its release the British Crime Writers' Association voted it the best crime novel ever. It is one of Christie's best known and most controversial novels, its innovative twist ending having a significant impact on the genre. Writing Mystery And The Indie Entrepreneurial Spirit With Adam Croft

27:29
Get your free Author 2.0 Blueprint at: http://www.TheCreativePenn.com/blueprint The publishing industry continues to change at an incredible pace, and many of us are exhilarated by the ride. In my interview today, British crime author Adam Croft gets excited about the possibilities and discusses how he sold over 130,000 books without a publisher. How Adam started writing seriously about four years ago and decided to indie publish his first novel. He just wanted some feedback on it but it went on to sell 90,000 copies and by the end of 2011, all his books had sold over 140,000 copies. Adam has never pitched his books to agents/publishers and is very happy as an indie, retaining control over what he is doing. He is now a full-time author-entrepreneur. Adam writes in the crime genre. The first two are in the gritty Knight-Culverhouse series. Kempston Hardwick is more Agatha Christie/ Midsomer Murders vein so less gritty and more mystery. On the violence of crime vs mystery and how the genres compare with gender buying. Adam loves the traditional end of mystery and the old style whodunit. It's also a challenging type of book to write. On writing a mystery. Plotting vs pantsing and what emerges as you write. The planning needed for traditional mystery writing and learning by reading and doing. Being independent is a fantastic opportunity. You can push the boundaries and embrace change. So don't be pigeon-holed. Exit Stage Left has been produced as an audio dramatization. Adam set up a company with an actor and now has a studio set up to produce this and other audiobooks in the future. This is a truly entrepreneurial spirit! On selling rights and the possibilities for indie authors that are currently only available for traditional authors. We discuss translation rights and how Brazil is opening up (their economy is better than the UK!) Comparing the US and UK market and the types of books that are popular within each market. How the different stores have different reviews. The benefits of KDP Select and whether Kobo will expand to a self-publishing platform soon. On selling 130,000+ books. The key is marketing your books and your brand. It is a business and you need to be proactive. Social media is a part of that. Anybody can do this now. There are no barriers. But you still need a great book in a category that sells. How crime seems to be a popular genre in the UK and the top sellers are often crime. [I'll be interviewing some more of these authors on the podcast in coming episodes.] On the entrepreneurial mindset. It's essential for indies and Adam has always run his own companies so it is natural to him. The internet does make it easy for everyone and there's a lot of training on how to make the most of it all. You used to be held back by physical stores but now every reader can find every writer. On the excitement of being an indie at the moment and how times will continue to change over the next few years. More online reading, more portability e.g. audiobooks, more ebooks and more devices, as well as more books and more tools for marketing. It's hard to say what will happen but for people like us, it's only going to get better. Why Adam wouldn't sign with a publisher.

Heros in Crisis #8 - Plot twist, the Joker was writing the comic the whole time!

07:01
Heroes in Crisis was set up to be an Agatha Christie style murder mystery set in the DC universe. In the sanctuary area, where heroes go to recoup from the mental stress of being super heroes, Wally West is found dead in issue 1. Over the next few issues, the readers are given the clues to try to figure out which of the residents of sanctuary did it. In issue 8, it is revealed that the murder of Wally West was.... Wally West. Manifesting talents which were previously not revealed to the audience, which breaks the Agatha Christie model, it turns out that the Flash was mentally unhinged, had the ability to travel through time, and was an expert computer hacker.
