Our new brand identity

We’re constantly creating and refreshing brand identities for our clients, but recently we decided it was time to look at our own. Our logo just didn’t feel like us anymore – not all that surprising considering it was created over 15 years ago. The new identity is all about expressing the creativity, diversity and personality of Dalziel & Pow – of the company overall, and everyone who works here – it’s more representative of who we are today. We launched this at our Summer Social event – everyone was given a brand box containing customisable notebooks with stamps and stickers, and all kinds of branded stuff including cupcakes and beer, while a screen-printing workshop got everyone involved. Too many people in this world think that branding begins with choosing a brand name and ends with hiring a designer to slap a few colors on any old generic logo and that's it. Now, if you're one of those people just give me a few minutes, okay? Let's fix that perception. Some people think that building a brand is a task strictly left for graphic designers. No, nuh-uh, wrong. The truth is branding is from marketers and business owners. Branding takes place at every touchpoint, every interaction with the consumer, and every time they think of your brand. Most importantly, branding is ultimately controlled by the customers. Too many companies think that they get to choose their brand while you only really get to influence how your customer sees you, not the other way around. So to help, we've put together a quick look at some of the key elements that go into building a strong brand identity. First up, being responsive and consistent. Don't just build things because they make you happy. You take an action, you see how the customer responds, take on more of the feedback, and then you implement that into your brand strategy going forward. By monitoring your audience responses as you go, you can see what does or doesn't work while consistently engaging with them. And of course, there's no need to alter every fiber of your company's being with every piece of feedback but keep an eye out and take things in. Next up, authenticity. Now, it should really mean something to say that a brand is authentic. But what does that mean? Truly authentic brands understand themselves at the deepest level. And they're able to foster meaningful and long lasting relationships with customers. And not only are customers more likely to trust an authentic brand, they're more likely to recommend it, which is key. Third, creating a brand strategy. A brand is never truly done. Over time they change, they evolve, they develop. I mean, you can see that in logos alone. Branding is a daily process of bringing multiple aspects of your business and voice together and then adjusting them to what the customer expects from you. Next up, brand story. Now this relates back to credibility. How did you as a company come to be? And what makes you so passionate about solving this particular problem? The term storytelling is used a lot but this isn't just about telling a good story. It's about telling people what your company stands for and getting them to stand behind the ideals of your business. Then we have brand essence. Now this is when we get to your company's core values. What principles will shape your company's culture? Now, many companies out there will claim to differentiate themselves with values like, we're transparent. We have have a great company culture, there's no company out there like us. Okay, okay, well done, fine. These unique core values that so many companies profess kind of become the standard for tech start-ups. Which is good, it just means that we can all stop stating the obvious and look for really unique, new, fantastic ways to differentiate ourselves. It's time to show instead of tell. Think of what truly unique values you have and build them into your company culture from day one. And finally, brand differentiation. Copying the same strategy as another company is the tactic reserved by those most dastardly of villains who just aren't creative enough to come up with their own ideas. Don't be a copycat. Originality is way more fun. This all comes back to defining your unique selling point, your USP. What does your brand have that others don't? And how can you position your company in a way that it can't be replicated? Haviv is a partner and designer at Chermayeff & Geismar & Haviv. He teaches Visual Identity Design at The School of Visual Arts in New York City and coauthored the book Identify: Basic Principles of Identity Design in the Iconic Trademarks of Chermayeff & Geismar. Haviv has been a frequent speaker internationally and has served as a judge for the Art Directors Club of New York, the CLIO awards, and other competitions. TNT has teamed up with International brand design agency, Design Bridge, to redesign their brand identity. Design Bridge’s challenge was two-fold, firstly to define a new strapline that would convey TNT’s new strategy & culture, and secondly to design a new logo and brand world which would reflect TNT’s vision. Design Bridge created TNT’s new strapline ‘The People Network’, that reinforces the company’s aim to connect people and businesses in a truly personal, rather than purely professional manner. The fundamental truth is that it’s the amazing people; customers and employees alike, who are at the very heart of global trade on a daily basis. This new line will work to galvanize the ‘challenger’ spirit of those working internally at TNT, and will also resonate powerfully with TNT’s customers around the world. Over the last 70 years, TNT built the most extensive European road and air network for parcels and freight and scores high on customer friendliness. Tex Gunning, CEO of TNT: “We have a clear strategy to focus on our greatest strengths: our people, their human approach to serving customers, and our unique network. Customers are not barcodes and we are not robots. We all relate to what drives our customers: business growth with a personal touch. Taking time to understand what customers really need distinguishes us from others. We are The People Network.” Design Bridge refined TNT’s brand mark, crafting the logo to give it a fresher, confident and more contemporary look. It was essential to find truth and relevance in the key brand equities – colour, shape and form – to move the brand forward. Used throughout our visual language, the TNT circle has been introduced and is shown in perpetual motion moving through the world. Using the circle we reflect how we keep people at the heart of our business. Easily recognizable as part of the TNT brand, it links and identifies all touch-points as important components in the global brand that is ‘The People Network’. Launching on the 29th September, the new design language will be seen incorporated across a multitude of touch-points throughout TNT’s global network, ranging from; vehicle livery, ATL communications, staff uniforms through to packaging around the world. When Microsoft launched the Xbox One they commissioned Man vs Machine to design their global motion brand identity. The Xbox logo animation is one of their most iconic brand elements and our task was to translate their new logo into a full 3D brand language, with this item being the long form brand expression. A key aim was communicate how the brand has made the transition from core gamers to people who love music, television, films and apps. It’s evolving towards broad entertainment. Xbox has become a premium experience. As a result we wanted to play on the idea that Xbox is constantly reinventing itself. The brand development film focused on a rhythmic self-generating X; a dynamic spherical form which simulated the evolving nature of the brand. We designed the resolve to feel clean and effortless, seamlessly folding together multiple layers into the logo. In order to make a larger impact in providing assistance to those suffering from eating disorders, we have expanded the mission and service delivery of Project HEAL.  In addition to treatment access, we are now building Communities of HEALing, a peer-support and mentorship program aimed to strengthen recovery.    In honor of our expanding our mission and program delivery, we decided Project HEAL should get an updated look! Our brand identity is a visual expression of who we are and what we stand for.  We wanted a new brand identity that embodies our values, our mission, and our culture. Our new brand-identity represents not only the growth and transformation of Project HEAL’s mission and program breadth, but it embodies the core values of what energizes and drives the work of our organization: Community, Recovery, Hope, Innovation, Collaboration, Inspiration, Happiness, Health and Friendship. We are proud of our new brand. It symbolizes the bold new direction of Project HEAL and we look forward to working with you in the next steps of Project HEAL’s journey as we expand our wings to help exponentially more people.
